Return of the Horror Drive-In

Monsterfest_drive_in Drive-ins, once a staple of American movie-going, are said to be making a comeback.

While I spent many a summer evening of my youth attending Disney drive-in double features, I sadly have never been able to experience any of the fun creature features that were synonymous with the drive-in experience -- all-night-long horror quadruple features having long since vanished.

Until now...

Next weekend (Friday, September 7, and Saturday, September 8), the folks behind the DVD review website DVD Drive-In are teaming up with Vandergrift, PA's Riverside Drive-In to bring the glory days of the old dusk-to-dawn horror shows back to life with Drive-In Super Monstermania.  $10 will bring you admission to four films each night (along with classic trailers) and an opportunity to relive a long-gone classic film going experience.

Friday night's films include a "Nature Run Amok" series of Bert I. Gordon's Food of the Gods and Empire of the Ants, Jeff Liberman's Squirm, and the original Willard, while Saturday night brings you Tales From the Crypt, Horror Express, Grave of the Vampire (written by David Chase, creator of The Sopranos!), and Hannah: Queen of the Vampires.  Sound like a hell of a lot of fun.

Shows start at dusk, but I think you knew that already.

When I was a youngster growing up in the mid to late 70's my parents often made trips to the local drive in. Some of my fondest childhood memories were formed there. While I don't remember the movies that I saw, I was little and was often asleep in the first feature, the first double header that I remember was Aliens and Predator. What a great night that was! Thanks Dad, if it wasn't for my parents I wouldn't be the horror freak I am today and their not even horror fans really they just happened to have exposed me to horror indirectly.

I miss drive ins! The 2 drive in theatres (right next to each other, how cool was that?) closed and were torn down about 25 years ago where I live. I miss those days. Nothing beats being in your car dressed comfortably, bringing your own snacks, drinks & a pillow if you need it. So much cheaper paying for a carload instead of a small mortgage payment for a family to go to the movies. And no one sitting in front of you blocking your view or talking on their phone! Those good old days!

Matt, great news! Guess the scariest thing I ever saw at a drive-in before age 5 was the Planet of the Apes. When I was around 12 I sat through maybe 4 or 5 Planet of the Ape movies at an all day festival. I loved it so much-- I still have the stubs in the ole' childhood jewelry box. We have a drive-in about an hour from here and will be checking on the lineup. Should expose the kids to that nostalgia.

I loved drive-in movies as a kid & wished there were some in my area of Texas. This Labor Day weekend I was in Tennessee & they had a drive-in playing Rob Zombie's Halloween. I wanted to go, but didn't have the time...
