Halfway There
Having made it about halfway on my highly arbitrary journey through the horror alphabet, I thought I’d say a quick word of thanks to all those readers who have been sending back their insights and expansions on my posts. As the officially LEAST EDUCATED horror writer on AMC’s Monsterfest team, I always feel like I’m writing from a position of enthusiastic ignorance. My only genuine qualification for writing about horror films is that I’m one of those people whose view of life – whose whole personality, in fact – was shaped by the horror movies I watched as a child and as a teenager. Horror movies made me, in large part, the person I am today, and this fact makes me fairly comfortable writing about them even when – as is often the case – I’m really just wandering around in the fog.
All of this explains why I’ve been so interested in reading what people have had to say about the subjects I’ve picked. Whether showing me where I’ve been off base or how an idea or theme I’d noticed in one or two films shows up in lots of other ones as well, the responses have broadened my appreciation for how many other people have the same kind of curious relationship to this genre that I have. When I’m watching a good horror movie, I feel – oddly enough – at home. These movies make sense to me in a way that no other kind of movie does. I’d never been so foolish as to think I was unique in this way, but my time on Monsterfest has given me a clearer picture of just how far from unique I really am.

Looking forward to hopefully seeing your "ABC's of Horror Alphabet" under the CATEGORIES section to the right once it's complete. It has been a fun series. You're right. It helps us all feel a little more at home within ourselves and with the intrigue to such films/characters/flaws. It's a comfort and in ways a confirmation,"Are any of us truly of this world after all?"Guess it's all a matter of the source of the soul.Keep up the creature features.
I love your ABC's of Horror Alphabet! It's fun to see your insight, as well as others, into the fun world of the horror genre. And the letter "J" is coming up. I hope it is all about my favorite slasher. (hint hint)
Keep up the ABC's!!!!
I'm afraid I short-changed Jason in the J department, but I'll make it up to him later in the alphabet!
I think you're doing a great job. I would not have guessed that you are the "least educated" among the bloggers and in fact who cares! That's why I like this blog so much--because as a reader I can tell that you writers are all true horror fans who care very much about the subjects about which you are writing. You're not some holier-than-thou critics who use condescending language and smugness and act as if your opinions are the only ones who matter, like some film critics seem to do. You guys are fans, just like us, who have a genuine affection and APPRECIATION for what you are talking about, and you speak to us as if we are human beings, in a humorous, sometimes self-deprecating manner that is always informative and entertaining, and frequently very enlightening. I, for one, appreciate it immensely and really look forward not only to the rest of this series but to reading posts on here every day.
Plus, I have always thought Ptolemy was a cool name.
i really enjoy your ABC's of horror entries, and everything else about this blog for that matter. monsterfest is great, in my opinion, cause its by horror fans for horror fans. and all the bloggers here really have a since of the genre. plus i just like talking and debating horror with other horror fans. keep up the good work guys!
p.s. i wouldnt call you least educated, i dont like that term. everybody is going to know more about something than others will. for example, i know psycho in and out, and could probably answer just about any psycho trivia q you could throw out. thats cause its my favorite movie. im sure i wouldnt have a chance if we were playing trivia with your favorite horror films Ptolemy.
Thanks for all the feedback!
A Psycho quiz. Now that's something I'm going to get right onto...
a psycho quiz....now that would be great. i was gonna try the notld quiz but there were too many i didnt know.
Noting Joe's mentions of talking and debating the horror genre...I like to think of it as monster philosophy. :) Agree with Court about the name Ptolemy~icon in the stars. Cool. Glad to see all the affirmations re: Pt's ABC's and this blog site overall.
