Box Office Numbers of the Beast

DaywatchSo, I'm no Hollywood numbers junkie, and we all know that releasing a movie in the theaters is just a marketing stunt designed to sell a DVD, but...sometimes the box charts are sort of interesting.

As you know, Daywatch, part two of the fantasy/horror trilogy industry wags refer to as the "Russian Lord of the Rings" opened on Friday, and when I looked at the numbers, I saw it made...$46,000.  Now, I know foreign films don't do as well, but that's such a paltry sum.  I think Disturbia has forty-six grand in the cushions of its couch.

Then I saw it was a "limited" release.  How limited?  Five theaters.  That's almost a "private" release. So, then I did the quick math and saw that means it made, roughly, $9,000 per theater.  For comparison's sake, Shrek the Third made 26mil in 4,100 theaters which means it made only 6 grand a theater (using my rough beast math).

Soooo, that seems to indicate that when they roll it out nationwide, Daywatch should rake it in.  Numbers are weird.  You can't trust them.  This link here even seems to suggest 666 aint what it used to be.  Check it out.  Happy new week.
