Pushing In The Cushing

6ae6_1_bjpg One of the finest actors ever to appear in a horror film, the late Peter Cushing never seems to get the same accolades that his peers like Christopher Lee do. But the man could act circles around Lee, who has always been more of a presence than an actual performer.

Cushing was one of those rare actors who, even when appearing in garbage like Corruption, was able to raise the level of the film, avoiding being dragged down to the film's own level of awfulness. It's hard to think of another actor who brought dignity and refinement to the worst, crustiest examples of the genre.

With the distinction of having played both Professor Van Helsing in the Hammer Dracula series and Baron Frankenstiein in Hammer's other eponymous series, Cushing brought distinctive qualities to each character that will forever have him associated with two of the most famous names in horror.  Icons from other genres he portrayed in his own inimitable way were Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Who.

He earned the nickname "Props" because, if you watch him closely, he's always picking up something during a scene to examine or fiddle about with.  Once you know to look for this affectation, you can make quite a drinking game out of it.  It's kind of sad that the role with which contemporary audiences will be most familiar, Grand Moff Tarkin in the first Star Wars film, is one of the few in which he isn't given any props.  Shame on you, George Lucas! "Charming, to the last", indeed.

It's also sad that STAR WARS is 30-freaking-years old! And I was 16 when I saw it! You do the math.

Have I like Peter Cushing from the first time I saw him in Dracula when I was a kid. He was one of the finest horror actors in the 60's and 70's. To me he did his finest work along side Christoper Lee those two who amazing together.

Thank you for this. Thank you so much.

He is my absolute favorite actor of all time. There's never been anyone else like him. I'm so glad Hammer studios is coming back--hopefully they release all their backtitles on dvd. I'm only 25 and I have not been able to see a lot of the "lesser" titles, including Corruption.

Thanks for the kind words -- always glad to see some fellow Cushing fans. I don't think we have any actors working regularly in the genre today who have his touch of class, great acting chops and the ability to raise the level of everyone around him by giving his best even in the lousiest movies.

And by the way, CORRUPTION is definitely one of the lousiest you'll ever see. Unbelievably, I saw a print of it projected at BAM in Brooklyn about a year and a half ago (more of less) during a series of lesser-known British horror films they were showing. It's definitely for completists only (and we know who we are), and if you're in a giving mood, and maybe even imbibing a little something while watching it, there's certainly some entertainment value to be had.

Funny I didn't find the time to respond to yourcomment until Christopher Lee's birthday (he turned 85 today!). Just a coincidence, I assure you.

Thanks for visiting the blog and taking the time to comment.

Sincerely,

Scooter McCrae
