Favorite Monsters Poll and Photo Gallery
The old black-and-white Frankenstein and Dracula--victims themselves of their respective fates--seem to cut almost romantic figures compared to more modern movie terrors, like hockey-mask wearing, axe-wielding psycho killers, or murderous, sadistic toys. Who your favorites are says something about your own psychology.

love horror movies keeps my intrest and most are intense
Some of the older Monsters - while more innocent, also seem more real, more connected to a warped human spirit rather than creatures of pure terror. In their connection to humanity, they seem more pitiful and horrible and less emotionally exploitative.
Hi,
You may want to add Damien (Omen) for future polling. Everytime this movie comes on I can't turn away. Although I had to resist watching it when the Mystery Channel showed it on Easter.
wheres my norman bates!
vampires all the way!!!
I absolutely love the movie Slaughter of the Vampires. I've it as a small child and still love it as an adult. I also love al of the Hammer Movies but one has been very elusive called Twins of Evil any chance of play either one or both of these classics?
What about "It" from it? That thing still freaks me out
I looked at pure unstopabilty. Which is why I had to give the nod to characters like Jason Voorhies, Freddy Krueger, and Michael Myers. They were more real to me. They all have the same thing in common. Severe childhood emotional trauma of the most horrific kind. No matter what you did you could only dream of stopping them. You couldnt kill them you could only slow them down. Dracula had garlic, sunlight, a stake through the heart and a cross. Jason, freddy, and michael, unstoppable. And besides, they could all be real. You really could see someone in a hockey mask butchering people. You really could see some nut in a halloween mask hacking people to death with a huge knife. Whats more terrifying than knowing it could really happen
you cant go wrong with a good werewolf movie but also the puppet master series still rules i saw them when i was young and they still are the best out there, but you cant rule out jason or freddy either, but the most freighten monster is a clown
I thought that the Ringraiths were really creepy! But when I was younger it was Freddy Kruger, those shows scared the crap out of me but I couldn't keep my eyes off the screen.
I think you need to differentiate between traditional horror and the modern slash-and-gore genre. It's the difference between terror and horror, and the type of film. The best films for me have no need of graphic horror to get the point across, it's the apprehension of a monster or character that may never be seen although you know it's there that, if done properly, gives a better scare or thrill.
My all time favorite has to be Chucky from the Child Play movies. What could be more scary then and evil doll, who is trying to kill a kid so he can put his soul in his body ? The first time I watched one I was 5 yrs old it scared the crap out of me and it has been the one and only horror movie I have ever screamed at !!!! I have to say though that last Chucky movie ( Seed of Chucky) really sucked !!!!
Michael Myers, because he is more realistic to me. I have always watched his movies, and thought he could be a real person doing these things.
While my favorite horror movie is Halloween, I have to say that the movie monsters from back in the day of black and white are more traditional and do not get enough appreciation these days. Those movies, while today they seem to suck graphic wise, were actually pretty high-tech for those times. And, they set the scene for many of remakes. (example: 13 ghosts, house on haunted hill, house of wax, etc, etc, etc.) I believe that the older movies should be given much props.
Resident evil because of all the dead people and the action
Cannibal Holocaust
Most definitely Nosferatu.
All the way.
Such a classic.
Zombie movies are horror movies i find the best. The thought of survivng in citys and towns with swarms of zombies is thrilling. And dont tell me that blowing a zombies head off with a shotgun is not the best!
Michael Myers is my all time favorite but you cannot leave out Jason and Fred Krueger. After you are sure you have killed them, they just keep coming and coming!!
The movie that I found most frightening for the longest time was Dolls.
something just got to me, I would always see my teddy bear grow giant sized and start eating people.
come on people it's not all about fread, jason, and it's for sure not chucky!
if your going to bring them up and not bring up leatherface and pinhead or even herbert west. then you don't love horror the least bit.
and I love dead alive, the beyond, and don't even say that fread is the craziest thing wes has come up with WHAT ABOUT LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT?!!
ZOMBIE MOVIES ARE THE BOMB.. Don't get me wrong, Vampires deserve some credit as well, but zombies are kings of horror. The story lines, Make-up, special effects, gore, realism, and down right inventivness. yea I know i can't spell, so forgive me. I do love the older monster movies, as well as the newer monster movies. But someone must seriously come up with a new storyline. Storylines have been used and abused throught the years, and now are being reused. We Horror fans are in some serious need of fresh film.
dude where's punkin head, or jeepers creepers, and then even leperchaun, man greatest monsters out there.
i thank IT scary, ever sence ive been afraid of clowns
Michael Myers, has always appealed to me. He is dark and plans every kill he makes. He is a pure psychopath, and everything we've seen of Michael Myers is continuing in Rob Zombie's vision. Myers is evil carnate. John Carpenter's Halloween is in my opinion one of the biggest classics in all of cinema not just the horror genre.
Ummm what can I say Chucky really appeals to me. I've watched the movies sence I was eight with Bride of Chucky, it's you that you wouldn't think a doll could kill you.
Although much credit is due to the old black and white masterpieces(Creature from the Black Lagoon, Dracula, Frankenstein, and of course the Wolfman), they were usually just victims of our own greed, or quests to be greater than what we are, or even worse, world domination! They were all just trying to warn us not to get to big for our own pants. But Michael Myers,....just had a head full of bad wiring from birth. Nobody wronged him, he wasn't created from nuclear radiation or the bite of a wolf or bat, or in some labratory with lightning rods and dead body parts. He was just an average child like any one of us. Accept for the fact that he was pure evil, and was always in the shadows, just out of our line of site. Silently, he stalked his victims, and just when they had convinced themselves that it was just the cat or the wind...."GAME OVER!" Now, that is a true monster, something that can't be topped by even Camp Crystal Lake!
I am a super HORROR FAN and would love to get notifications from this blog....
I am a super HORROR FAN and would love to get notifications from this blog....
i am an absolute horror movie lover!! there is nothing like watching a horror movie, and just knowing what is about to happen, but yet - you can get scared out of your britches!! i have always loved to watch horror movies since i was an youngster. but i have to honestly say that "HALLOWEEN" is my all-time favorite!! i like the early series not the latest though, H20 was alright, but part 1 was the best...
I don't know if he really counts as a monster but Hanibol Lector. He's like super smart and evil. Also any movie with creepy evil children that sing creepy nursery ryhmes.
Slashers should not even be mentioned as favorite horror movies. Most were terrible and I do not even think they were scary. Don't get me wrong some were good but most weren't. Good horror are the movies that make you think. For instance invasion of the body snatchers, Them, or Night of the Living Dead. Classics are also a good bet.
hey, i think 28 days later would be an excellent addition :) it is my absolute favorite horror movie, and it is actually my favorite movie in all genres, it is just such a gratly fabricated movie and has a great story and great effects
on second thought I'm going to go with either John Carpenter's the Thing or the Fly as scariest villians.
Remakes can suck it. The original "Black Christmas" still creeps me out every time I watch it. EVERY TIME. That was the beginning of all the modern day slasher films, according to some. Ughuhuhuh...so creepy. "BILLYBILLY! What your mother and I want to know is what you've done with the baby!!!!!"
And the original "Bad Seed" is also freakishly weird. Evil children freak me out...espicially little blonde girls.
Oh yeah....clowns are ALWAYS scary. Stephen King didn't make me afraid of clowns, I was just agreeing. I had a bad childhood experience involving clowns and then not too long after I saw "Killer Klowns Fom Outerspace" on television. What...I was four.
does anyone even know the true masters of gore like lucio fulci and herschell gordon lewis? like have any of you seen zombi? or cannibal holocaust? house by the cemetary? seven doors of death? the beyond? anyone comment me back i wanna talk to some true horror movie fans...remember boycott trendy horror!
its all about i spit on your grave too,any troma fans here?
i absolutely LOVE michael myers! he's been (and still is!) my favorite horror dude! he creeps me out every time i watch one of his movies. i had a dream one time where i was in H20 and he stabbed me! yea, pretty scary, but i love it! i also love the creepy theme music for his movies too!
TO ALEX: you said you wanted to talk to some true horror fans so here i am.
I gotta say...this day and age where CGI is taking over the realms of entertainment, it's hard to find good horror flicks that used "real" special effects. Dog Soldiers is the movie that made me have a little more faith in the horror genre, the werewolf effects were astounding and the film had little or no CGI added to it. We need a little bit more of that this day and age. Stop with this teeny bob trendy crap they keep feeding us and take horror back to when it was horror.
i was thinking that amc's monsterfest should have an insta post message board like monstershd.
we need more classics on the poll and on fear friday. come on where is the little shop of horrors, the last man on earth, and night of the living dead. the classics are what inspired what we have today john carpender said halloween could'nt of been made without psycho or house on haunted hill. i dont think any slashers would of been made without norman bates.
or has anyone seen battleroyal? not really a horror film but gorey. or cubed? street trash?
and its all about the reanimator series. and dead alive man i could go on for hours
I agree with so many others here. The classics cannot and should not be omitted nor forgotten. The Horror genre would be nothing today without them.
However, I don't think ALL of these films can be lumped into one particular "horror" category, either. Real horror no longer exists. It's mutated at least 3 times. New films change with the times and society. With each new generation, the bar gets pushed. Once that bar is pushed, it's nearly impossible to pull it back without lackluster reviews or fan appreciation. Let me explain ...
Generation 1 - The Classic Horror.
"Nosferatu", "Dracula", "Frankenstein", "Wolf Man", "The Mummy", "Creature from the Black Lagoon", etc. Famous Actors include: Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, Vincent Price, etc. The films set the standard for horror/suspense during their time. Generally, the audience "felt bad" for the monster.
Generation 2 - The Scary Horror.
Hands down, this began in the late 60s with George Romero's "Night of the Living Dead". It set a new precendent. Vicous monsters/creatures. What also followed included the 70s Dracula series with Christopher Lee, where Dracula was now cunning and smarter. The audience was now frightened by the monster - not simply from appearance, but by the gruesome acts of murder it commited. Early Gore films spun off from here (e.g., Cannibal Holocaust, Last House on the Left, etc.).
Generation 3 - The New Classic Horror.
The seemingly unstoppable human killer. Started with John Carpenter's "Halloween", introducing the whole world to Michael Myers. Followed a few years later by Jason Vorhees in "Friday the 13th" and Freddy Krueger of "Nightmare on Elm St". This generation would end up being the longest running, aside from the oiginal classics.
Generation 4 - The Psychological Thriller.
Arguably, this began with "Scream" by director Wes Craven. The killer was now much smarter than ever before, eluding the other characters, (as well as the audience), until the very end. "I know What You Did Last Summer" would follow, and eventually the popular "Saw" series. With each new film in this generation comes more blood, more gore, and more elusive/brilliant plans.
Ok, just to get one thing clear. People are talking about how they love Halloween and Friday the 13th because they could happen? right, because somebody could obviously survive getting shot and stabbed every 5 minutes for about 9 movies. I don't hate horror that couldn't happen (i.e., 28 Days Later, Pulse, etc.) but i'm more into the things that could happen (not unstoppable killers). Things like Scream, Disturbia, Silence of the Lambs, Saw, etc. So don't feed me that bullcrap that people who are impossible to kill is real stuff.
I left something out. the best monster/killer of all time: Billy, "Black Christmas"
I am a zombie movie fan, I started with the original black and white Night Of The Living Dead, and worked my way up to the one that was redubbed with color over it, and the remake. and then went on to Luchio Fulchi's Zombie and others I prefer the aforementioned movies, but I am always up for any horror.
now "HALLOWEEN"is the all time best movie ever i cant wate till augest 31 2007 when the new one comes out!!!!!
.....all I have to say is this: WHAT ABOUT EVIL DEAD!?!
While Mikey and Jason are great, they are rather one-dimensional, i.e. they kill anything that breathes. I would agree that the older generation films are the best because you never knew what was going to happen, giving you suspense AND gore. Take these for example: Amityville Horror, Salem's Lot (original), Scanners, Maniac, and Trilogy of Terror. After watching Salem's Lot, I used to wake up and swear I could hear someone scratching at my bedroom window (freaky!!). And Trilogy of Terror scared the bejesus out of many a child, and that was a made for TV movie! Now that is classic! And I find it odd how no one has mentioned The Exorcist. That set the baseline upon which so many other films compare themselves, like 28 Days Later.
I totally agree with Freddy being one of my all time favorites, cuz he had style!!! You HAD to appreciate his "bad taste" so to speak! But what I can't believe is how hardly anyone is saying "The Exorcist"!!!! COME ON!!! It totally paved the way for a whole range of new horror!! That kind of terror comes not just from "maybe there's some nut" to now THAT'S terrifying!!! I loved how they recaptured alittle bit of that in "The Exocism of Emily Rose" Good stuff. I also agree with "Amityville Horror"This stuff is good ole fasioned phsychological suspense!!! the closest to a good freak out like that came from. "An American Haunting" (Great Effects!) I also agree that everything is becoming alittle too CGI. I mean a little can be good, but nothing ruins a movie faster than crappy CGI!! I really miss Good old monster makeup and Prosthetics!!! One really good example of GOOD new movie with the real deal in the makeup was "Thirteen ghosts" AWESOME Effects!! Another movie people are forgetting is "Cabin Fever" Now THAT stuff could really happen!!! SCARY cuz it COULD happen, Plus points for great effects in that movie too!! But I suppose it's hard to just say "horror" movie and have people agree. There are so many genres of horror today you'd Really have to post it in sections: best phsychological thriller, Best Movie monster, Best movie killer, Best movie effects, and so on... Me I LOOOOOVE em all!!!
HEY FORGOT FREDDY, OR JASON I MEAN THERE COOL.BUT THE EXORCIST IS THE ALLTIME BEST HORROR MOVIE EVER MADE----I MEAN EVEN TODAY IT STILL SCARES AMERICA, THE LAST MOVIE EXCORCIST:THE BEGINNING WAS OK...BUT KINDA OF STUPID...BUT IT GOT THE RIGHT IDEA....SO TO STAY SCARED LETS KEEP THIS ONE ON THE TOP OF THE LIST......

If anyone has checked the poll lately they will see that Godzilla has roared into the number one spot and Mothra has flown her way into the number three slot. I think that this is statement being made by the vast majority of fans of giant Japanese monster fans. This genre is generally overlooked. I think that the fans really went out of their way to make a statement here.
ok so definately HALLOWEEN is the best horror movie EVER! c'mon ppl! basically any movie that has any thing to do with john carpenter is gonna be a bad ass movie! im SO not lookin forward to the new HALLOWEEN movie cuz hollywood is totally remakin it and destroyin a classic...like in ressurection when busta rhymes beat the crap outta michael myers...yea that wouldve never happend in the original series! gah!
All I have to say is what is all this junk about make survival horror games into movies. House of the dead ,Silent Hill ,and Resident Evil were some of the worst Horror movies I have ever seen.People need to leave the Video games alone and start getting creative. One more thing people are taking movies That should be a trilogy at best and are stretching them so thin that all you are seeing is the same poo over and over again. Don't get me wrong I love Freddy and Jason but after a while your just beating a dead horse!!
Last comment.. An American Haunting was up there with The Exorcist in my opinion because they didn't have to use gore to amplify the scare factor..
What??????>........Exorcist is not a suspense thriller.....maybe Ghost Ship or some other boring movie like that....but--no way is the Exorcist a thriller.....it is real HORROR......
What??????>........Exorcist is not a suspense thriller.....maybe Ghost Ship or some other boring movie like that....but--no way is the Exorcist a thriller.....it is real HORROR......
we should have the next 25 greatest monsters and have all the forgotten ones in it.
The Exosist is great, leatherface is great, jason and freddy and pinhead, all great evil dead movies are good, Exorsism of emily rose scared the crap out of me and I'm a horror movie fanatic. Amittyville horrors had a few really scary ones that made you think twice about going in a dark place or basement alone. An american haunting was good. All zombie movies rule. The thing freaks alot of people out and pumpinhead and so on and so on. But you cannot forget all the classic black and whites that started the whole thing. They are all great. Horror films rule and thats all I have to say about that. Oh except I forgot mike myers and I cant wait till augest to see Rob Zombies take on that awsome series. His movies are awsome to by the way, but only house of 1000 corpses could really be placed in the slasher category. Devils rejects is just a good ol slasher film, but if leatherface is in there than Otis needs to be in there too.

hALLOWEEN 9 IS COMING OUT AND I CANT WAIT FOR IT TO COME OUT
Okay people! Here is how I feel that the top 10 monsters list shapes up from a historical point of view.
1. King Kong
2. Frankenstein's Monster
3. Godzilla
4. Alien
5. Dracula
6. The Wolf Man
7. The Mummy
8. The Creature From The Black Lagoon
9. Michael Myers
10. Jaws (aka Bruce the Shark)
After that it kinda gets subjective. Any of the top 4 (Frankenstein, Alien, Godzilla, or King Kong) have legit reasons to be placed number one. Kong however was an inspiration for Godzilla, the works of Ray Harryhausen, and so many others it is hard not to name him king.
1. Jason Voorhees, Friday The 13th
All Except # 8
2. Michael Myers , Holloween All Except # 3
3. Freddy Kruger , Nightmare On Elm St. All
4. Jerry Dandridge, Fright Night
5. Regine Dandridge, Fright Night II
6. Eric Cord From WereWolf Tv series
7. The Howling 1,2
8. Night of the Living Dead *zombies*
9. The Creeper from Jeepers Creepers
10.April Fools' Day
11.Puppet Master
12.Vamp
13.Dawn Of The Dead "Not The Remake !! "

More Hammer movies! What about the wicker man! The origonal of course. Alien and Aliens are my favorite films, that bug is a scary as hell. And what about Vincent Price? Or Peter Lorres film "M"
I would like to correct "Jake"
He said..

---------------------
The psychological Thriller started with scream? You're kidding me? I guess Alfred Hitchock or Dario Argento never existed, just give all the credit to Wes "I'm a sell out" Kraven. Scream was a poor film and not a decent psychological thriller. Hell, i'd say the first SHAFT film is a better "Psychological Thriller" Than scream. That's sarcasm, dont all of you start lighting your torches and sharpening your pitchforks at once.
Well as a big fan of all horror films I really don't find any of the vampire movies scary at all. Don't get me wrong I am as much a vampire fan as a horror fan, they just are not scary. Most of the horror films made recently I have not been that impressed with, most of them are knock offs of older films. Come on people Chucky stopped scaring me when I was ten, and after the second one they started getting funny not scary. I have to say older horror films are the best. Freddy, and Michael Myers are the best of all.
If people here think that Friday the 13th was the #1 scary movie of all time, you must be retarded. Dont forget EXCORCIST. The Top 10 scary movie came down to number one which is (EXCORCIST). Learn your facts and know the best of the best. Jason keeps hiding from the movie like he was to scared.
2. Halloween H20. Micheal Myers! If jason was so great why Halloween is coming back this year.
Freddy was a clown. He was to much of a joker. No one should be scared of this wack horror movie "Elm St".
Hmm. I would agree to the Exorcist. Altho' My all time favorite had to be "Theater of blood" starring Vincent Price. But I guess if we are talking currently scary.? "An American Haunting." Gets my vote.
you should git freddy vs pin haed and then michael mieras vs jashon and pin head vs pusnsher vs cuuak&son vs boogeman pes out
you should git freddy vs pin haed and then michael mieras vs jashon and pin head vs pusnsher vs cuuak&son vs boogeman pes out
I think that Exorcist and Halloween(part 2 and up) has been the scariest movies to me and still should remain the primary scary movies. Freddy Krueger is too funny to be 100% scary. Friday the 13th, American Werewolf in London, Vamp, Night of the Living Dead 3, and Jeepers Creepers should be second to the top primary movies. Jeepers Creepers in my opinion is a great, up-to-date scary movie. You have to admit, if a creature that liked your scent and wanted your body parts, and there was no accurate way of stopping it, you would be scared too!!
Based on some of the comments here, we're planning on doing additional lists/polls around "monsters" and movies. If you have suggestions for these, let us know here on the board. For example, we might do a poll on favorite "human" or "humanoid" monsters, such as Jason, and another list focusing on non-human monsters, such as zombies. Doubtless, some creatures will fall somewhere in the middle. We're also planning a top 25 horror movies list - so let your nominations be known.
I am a huge fan of the Living Dead, nothing is scarier than a loved one coming back from the dead with nothing on their mind other than to eat your flesh! Walking zombies, running zombies, it's all good. Just don't say that 28 Days/Weeks is a zombie film. Was it great? Yes, but those weren't zombies. Also, since I haven't seen it yet, what about the Blob? Original or remake, They both put the goo in good, and the eat in great. Imagine being dissolved alive, trapped and unable to breath...creepy!

I've read through all these comments and so many people have mentioned so many great horror movies. I am most surprised that the all time classic Wes Cravens "The Last House On The Left" was not mentioned at all, this is a movie that when it came out a judge actually court ordered one of the female actresses to prove that she was still alive. I would have to say that Jaws is definatelly up on my list all though its not my type of horror movie i have to respect it this is a movie that scared people so much they still dare not enter the ocean. Another great and my personal favorite is a movie called Shutter its a korean movie based on a true story, If you have the chance and you could find where to get it i definatelly recomend it. Here is my list.
1.The Last House On The Left
2.Jaws
3.Shutter
4.Auditions
5.Friday the 13th (all but 8,9,10)
6.Halloween (all but h20)
7.Hostel
8.IT
9.The Eye
10.original Dawn of the Dead
11.The Exorcist
12.House of 1000 corpses
13.original Texas Chainsaw
14.The Devils Rejects
15.The Birds
16.Night of the Living Dead
17.The Decent
18.The Exorcism of Emily Rose (only because its a true story)
19.Hellraiser
20.The People Under The Stairs (just because)
21.Nightmare On Elm Street (sorry fans but it was more of a joke then anything)
22.Arang
23.Puppet Master
24.Wrong Turn
25.Childs Play
The movies I prefer are dark and sinister, with plot lines hovering on the edges of reality. I must confess that I always 'root' for the 'bad guy'. There has never been a movie in which I was completely and totally satisfied with the conclusion; Bram Stoker's "Dracula" (the Francis Ford Coppola version with Gary Oldman, especially!) should have ended with Dracula and Mina flitting off into the night. The only movie in which I have gotten some satisfaction is "Interview with the Vampire" as the protagonist is also the anti-hero (beloved Lestat!) and he DOES lay claim to the advantage in the end.
MONSTERFEST SUGGESTIONS: these are some more movies and monsters i want to see on the poll:
monsters and characters:
ash williams
audrey jr. (little shop of horrors)
the killer shrews
leather face
invisible man (only universal not on poll)
grandpa (texas chainsaw massacre)
the bat (the bat)
norman bates (my favorite killer)
the blob
the body snatchers
vampire zombies (the last man on earth)
beetlejuice (for laughs)
dr. phibes
movies:
house on haunted hill
the bat
psycho
texas chainsaw massacre (origional)
evil dead 1, 2, and army of darkness
the last man on earth
a bucket of blood
dead alive
ft13 (pamela voorhees)
the brain that wouldnt die
dementia 13
children of the corn
carrie
night of the living dead
i could probably think of more.
FOR MY LAST POST: all origionals
I read through a few of the comments above and think most are repeating themselves! I have been a horror movie fanatic since I was born. The best horror movies are movies the could happen in real life, for example the classic Halloween- A mental patient escaping only to kill his last remaing sibling, or movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Wrong turn, Turistas- Groups of friends that travel into areas unknown and run into inbreed cannibals, These are the best horror movies that seem to entertain everyone the most!

Henry from Henry:Portrait of a serial killer. Some of the scariest, most disturbing scenes in american cinema history!
The Exorcist was and is the scariest movie of all time. Its something we ALL fear. But the leading man is MICHAEL MYERS!
Favorite "monsters":
Alien / Aliens
Predator
Reagan McNeil
Michael Myers
Dr. Satan
The Fly
The Thing (John Carpenter)
Yeah, where is Lord Voldemort? He's a pretty scary monster!
I think AMC would be well served to feature a segment about Asian monsters on this years Monsterfest. I think that showing the original Japanese "Gojira" and "Mothra" would be a good idea, plus maybe "The Host" and "Garuda." The new Gamera film would fit in and so would some Ultraman films.
I think that there should be a couple of new polls on Japanese/Asian Monsters plus a "Creatures" poll and a "Humanoid" monsters poll.
There is another cool blog that is tlking about this poll that fans and the folks here at AMC should check out over at Monster Island News. Go to http://monstermovieblog.blogspot.com/2007/04/who-is-greatest-movie-monster-of-all.html
BRAINS BRAINS BRAINS! How can this years monsterfest even appear with out the unholy masterpiece "Return Of The Living Dead" ??
Unstoppable zombies craving for fresh brains... Its a must see!
I just need to express a few thoughts here. First off, there isn't a single character from the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre that wasn't creepy as all hell. They were all scary, not just Leatherface or Grandpa. Secondly, Michael Myers was not scary in any of the Halloween movies. The scariest part of the original was the music when you hear it for the first time, so I'm sick of people building Michael up so much. The dolls from Puppet Master were way cooler and had more brutal murders. Also, anything Japanese or Italian over the last 35 years is awesome and you all need to check out some good horror. Stuff like Opera, Audition, Zombi, and How to Make a Doll. All of them are worth checking out if you like scary stuff. Enjoy!!!
I can't believe that only a couple of people have mentioned the Hellraiser Movies. I thought Pinhead and the Senabots where pretty freakin scary!!!!
American Haunting was good until the ending. Living in Tennessee and knowing the whole story they really screwed this movie up. But Exorcism of Emily Rose scared the crap out of me. And the best scary movies has to be 13 GHOSTS!!!!! Exorcist to follow.
I like alot of Horror movies and all I have seen mentioned here are pretty good. Some of them like "chucky" make me laugh now. I liked The guy from "phantasm" Angus Scrimm or that gril/guy from "Haute Tension". I thik Rest Stop was pretty good the killer on it was cool and you never actually saw him and even the killer on "Wolf Creek" was cool.
I also liked the guy from Ichn The Killer"
I am a horror fiend, and the BEST hands down was JAWS (the shark had everone looking over there backs in the bathroom, pool, lake, if it rained to hard, if you were in a boat or on a ship, the main reseason to go to the aquiuam the Sharks all because of 1 movie (JAWS)
close second place (Friday the 13th all)
other good movies (hellraiser, nightmare on Elm street,Saw,Texas chainsaw,Manica Cop,Vamp, goulies(not goonies),
If you were brought up in the Catholic religion, The Exorcist scared the pants off of you. (especially if you missed church the weekend before)
If we're talking vampires, Dracula (1990s)starring Gary Oldman was the most beautifully made.
Robert Rodriguez' From Dusk Till Dawn (original) was the most creative take Iv'e seen as far as vampire movies. The fact that Tom Savini was involved scores major points.
BUT Night of The Living Dead/ Dawn of The Dead (original/remake) marked me for life.
I wasn't fazed as a kid, but when I watched these films as an adult pregnant with my first child I began to have "what if" thoughts. The villian wasn't the boogeyman
they were your neighbors, family and friends. If that's not scary I don't know what is.
Is it just me or doesn't anyone remember the tall skinny man from "Phantasm?"
Movies that seem to have impressed me over the years are as follows:
1. ED GEIN (not the new one with Kane Hodder)
2. IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS/EVENT HORIZON(both with Sam Neil)
3. VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED(with Christopher Reeve)
4. TALES FROM THE HOOD (especially the last tale by Spike Lee)
5. THE DARK (with Sean Bean)
6. LORD OF ILLUSIONS (with the guy from Quantum Leap)
7. MOTEL HELL (with a re-make later this year)
8. NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 1990 (Tom Savini's NEW ending)
9. THE EXORCIST (the newer extended cut)
10. Salem's Lot (classic King told by Tobe Hooper)
11. HIGH TENSION (great ending)
12. FARGO (might not be considered horror but still quite strange)
This is not to be considered a final list but just some movies I think worth mentioning. Most of them came out after all the Freddy's, Jason's, and Micheal's.
All these remakes coming out by Micheal Bay and Rob Zombie are trash.
does anyone consider leprachaun 3. pure genius
Growing up, Nightmare on Elm St was the scariest thing I'd ever seen. Admittedly, New Line dropped the ball turning Freddy into their cash cow, but NoES 3 was very good also. The scariest ideas involve being terrorized during essential parts of our lives, ie. sleeping, or going to the bathroom (Dreamcatcher, the "shit-weasels") or eating. Wes Craven's ideas really disturb me... The Last House On the Left was horrific for it's time period and the remake for The Hills Have Eyes (unrated version) is insane. Really disturbing. I am also a really big fan of The Ring and Ring 2. And why hasn't anyone mentioned 28 Days Later! That movie was great.
What about "Predator"? I'm surprised he wasn't mentioned.
what about raw head rex. this movie scared me.
Halloween is the best horror movie of all time. The setting and the way it was filmed was perfection. The intense drama of the film was jaw dropping. Most people forget that it wasn't about how many he killed it was the way he stalked his victims and the music was perfect. Jaws has to be second, any movie that can alter peoples summer plans has to be up there, i remember as a kid my parents refused to let us go to the beach, now that is film making at its best
The scariest movie ever was "DUDE WHERE'S MY CAR" - no seriously jaws is the scariest movie ever I still wont go in the ocean scariest villian of all time. hard to choose there are so many good ones but I pick Jason Voorhees
We're putting together a reader nominated top monster poll to include those not on the original but mentioned here. We should have that up on Friday or Monday. Thanks for the nominations...

The only movie that ever scared the hell out of me has got to be Race with the Devil. I was 8 when I saw this and man it just freaked me out. So the sataist in this have got to be the scariest.
