Talk: Mad Men: Predictions
Wouldn't that be something for Don to recon with!
I was browsing thru the character profiles and noted this one for Sal's:
An ambitious employee, he has expressed an interest in starting his own firm, where art would be the driving force behind the copy.
Food for thought. Wouldn't that be an interesting story arc for Season 4~

This was indeed the best episode of M.M. I've ever seen! I couldn't believe how Don and Co. decided to start their own agency. But what, praytell, will happen to Paul, Sal and Ken? Have they been written off the show for good? And poor, ol' Betty..."on the road to Reno" for her and Henry. My prediction is that he'll beat her up or something in Season 4 and Don will come along to save her. Here's hoping that the next season won't be the last. This show is worth missing out on a night of drinking!

It was great to see Peggy stand up for herself and put Don in his place. She also told Roger "NO" when she asked him to fetch him some coffee. Betty also showed some backbone by telling Don she was leaving him and there was nothing he could do about it. Yes indeed, the women are getting bold and sassy! I wonder if this is a sign off things to come for next season.

So here it is teh end of a very dramatic and well written season of Mad Men. What are your predictions as to how it will end - for now? The future of SC ? Don and Betty? Roger and Jane? Peggy and the Duck conspiracy? Where the hell is Conrad Hilton- on the moon?

Ok, I am usually onlyt right on predictions about 40% of the time for MM, so I'll hedge my bets with a few options.
Matt Weiner doesn't do big cliff hangers, so we should have some resolution next Sunday.
Most likely: Betty's confidence will falter or she'll be influenced by that advice she's getting in episode 13 and not push for a separation or divorce this season.
2nd most likely: she'll ask for a separation and take the kid's to dads house (Don can buy out William). Don might agree as a stalling tactic. By the open of the next season, which would be a few years down the road, they could be divorced "off camera".
3rd (least likely) - she'll ask for the divorce. If she does, he'll agree will support her financially. His pride wouldn't allow him to try to win her back. He has trouble even admitting that he loves her.

Interesting post on the NY Times blog:
If you've seen the footage of JFK's final speech at a banquet reception in TX just before he takes the plane to Dallas on that Nov '63 morning you will notice that the final scene in this episode is set up in exactly the same way with Roger as MC announcing him and complimenting his beautiful wife - Betty and Don sit exactly where JFK and Jackie sat relative to the podium and the reception is eerliy similar. I wonder if this was a deliberate forshadowing of near future events.

Afflicted soldiers who hide a secret weakness for fear they won't be allowed to fight? Like Don? We seem to have both our Greek Myth and Fall of the Roman Empire coming together in this episode. How many Achilles' heels did you see mentioned in this episode (i.e. people private/secret weaknesses)? And should we be thinking about Trojan horses and assassins in the Senate? (Et tu Brute?)

Hello, I'm new to the postings, so bear with me please. Simply had to comment on the scene where Roger talks with his daughter and ex-wife r garding her wedding and she hands him an invitation. I noticed the date on her invitations, November 23, 1963 - this is the same day that I was married, and it happens to be the day after the JFK assasination! Betcha that will become an important plot in an upcomming episode!!

I heard two references to August in last Sunday's episode. Sally's teacher telling Don she is off for the month of August.
And Pete having a conversation with Paul, Ken and Harry about he likes "this time of year because it's so quiet". Just prior to the guys coming into his office, Pete was reading Ebony magazine.
I think the writers are getting us ready for the March on Washington coming up in August.
I can see Sally's teacher attending, and who knows...maybe Pete?

On August 28, 1963 two young girls were brutally murdered in their apartment on East 88th Street in NYC. This incident turned into a landmark story:

Alright call me crazy, but here's my prediction: I think Sally will start "seeing" Grandpa Gene when Betty and the children are out and about, and will be taken to a child psychiatrist, until Betty realizes he's actually still alive and living in the city, a foil for Don's double identity. What do you think?

Anyone want to start speculating on what Seven Twenty Three might mean? My guesses so far: a date (July 23, 1963), part of Peggy's new address in Manhattan (7 W. 23rd Street or 723 something else) or maybe a hotel room number? The latter is because I thought the scene with the man lying on the carpet looked like it could possibly be in a hotel room. Didn't recognize the setting as any of the homes or apartments we see regularly.

Hi everyone,
I can't stop worrying about Joan. I think she's starting to grasp that she made a mammoth mistake, marrying Greg (gee Joan, ya think? The whole engagement started on a bad note, with him sexually assaulting you in Don's office!), and I think that Joan wanted to say something to Don, while they were in the waiting room. They shared an amazing moment together, and I haven't seen Don laugh that hard, at Joan's fantastic quip of, "One moment you're on top of the world. The next, a secretary runs over your foot with a lawnmower," since Roger's quips he was making in the elevator, as they were on their way to the underground casino. The way Joan looked at Don, and he looked at her-the respect and love came blaring from my TV. I had a good cry at that moment, as I can't believe she may be leaving the show. The chemistry Joan has with everyone at Sterling Cooper is too important.
What will Joan do? Your predictions please, everyone!

Just about every episode this season has ended with Don at home with his family. In the past three episodes we've had Sally alone, after Gene's death. Then we have Don and Sally after baby Gene's birth, and most recent we have Don, Sally, and baby Gene, together for the first time.
I know there are alot of Betty haters out there, but I feel like this family is slowly finding one another, finding it's way back together and learning that it's easier to heal as a unit, then to try and do it alone.
Any predictions as to whether Betts and Bobby will be joining the party any time soon? And what needs to happen to make it so?

Last week Thirteen posted a great thread, "A Smear of Blood?" This week we had more bloodshed and in even a more violent way (Matt Weiner's Sopranos background has infiltrated). I posted on that thread that I felt that all this blood is foreshadowing, (and building up to, among other things figuratively) but most significantly, and literally, the assassination of JFK. There is no stopping this now and I can only imagine what else is to come in the next episodes. This escalation feels very operatic and all the other subplots may start to feel less significant as this steamroller builds. Any thoughts?

1. More of Joannie and Dr. Evil. Maybe they'll have a big argument and she'll call him out for out not telling her about his problems at the hospital. I'm scared to see what will come of it, but we need to see where they stand
2. Peggy continuing to push for higher status at SC, and shoving Paul the Poseur to the side as she does so. Maybe she'll make a splash with the Bacardi campaign.
3. Betty actually being motherly! Hopefully she'll find some happiness in the new baby. I don't know if I can stand to see her going through post-partum depression.
4. Roger realizing that the grass is not greener with his new wife - that honeymoon cannot last forever!
5. As I wished for last week, I'd like to see some character development with Ken. He has about as much personality as Barbie doll's plastic mate.
Episode 5 was pretty great, but what else would like to see next week?

Now I'm kinda new to Mad Men so I bought both seasons to help me catch up with season 3 and I was watching the episode where Don and Pete fly to LA and I personally think to shake things up the writing staff should move Don & Family, Roger/Jane, Sal & Peggy should move to California into a new Sterling Cooper office set up in LA kind of like what Weeds did for their 4th season and that was so much better because its an entirely different atmosphere. And they can still be Mad Men because let's face it - who on this show is actually happy?

2) The new baby Draper to be born already (probably won't happen for another episode or two)
3) A juicy scene with Peggy and Pete. How is there working relationship these days?
4) Peggy and the Swedish roommate out on the town. Oh, this should be fun!

When Peggy tried marijuana for the first time in Season 3 Episode 3, it seemed to foreshadow the changes in society that will be seen in the late 60s. Peggy and Joan seem to me to be the least tied down to their Sterling Copper roots.
Where do you think Peggy and Joan will end up in the late '60s?

Anyone else see what's going on with Harry's wife? I thought that was one of the more understated things going on this episode. She wants to go chat with Harry's co-workers, is she interested in taking on the role of Sterling Cooper wife like Betty, or is she just bored and happy to be out? Little bit of both? I don't know.
And the way she looks at Pete and Trudy. She's clearly jealous. And when everyone stops and lets those 2 have the floor, after Cosgrove says next time he needs to bring a date, she just leaves in this subtle but disappointed or frustrated jealous way.
Of course Harry being a guy doesn't catch it and continues to just stand there.
Anyway what was up with that? Trouble on the horizon for Harry or just one of those things?

There were a few moments during episode two that made my skin crawl. In addition to Peggy's awkward attempt at being fresh and flirty during her "Bye, Bye Birdie" performance I had a moment of paranoia when Betty's Dad sat next to Sally on the couch. Flashbacks of his awkward groping of Betty make me think that something bad is going to happen. Did anyone else see a flash or red during this scene or am I being overly sensitive? Or maybe acutely aware of the predictable?

I loved how Mona called Roger's new wife by the wrong name..."June" instead of "Jane...all the while sitting there in her little black dress and gorgeous hat looking years younger and totally lovely. How could Roger not have a regret or two looking at her, and since he quickly asked who would be escorting her to the wedding, maybe he does have a few.
As to Joan and the new Mrs. Sterling, I am wondering and trying to remember if June, er, Jane actually knows or realizes just how close a relationship Roger had with Joan. Joan was already engaged to her rat doctor when June/Jane came on board. Joan would never have told her, and why would Roger? Whatever else he is, I don't see Roger as a braggart about past affairs. So, my question to my fellow Maddicts is, does June/Jane know about Roger's affair with Joan? How do you think she will react when/if she finds out, and is it inevitable that she will find out?

Can we separate the comments from the open thread and discuss the many interpretations of Don's hand in the grass and this houghts while watching Sally and her teacher perform the Maypole dance?
There has been a lot of speculation on interpreting this scene, some more farfetched than others. Let me tell you what passed my mind when I saw the scene, then you can share your interpretation.
My mind went immediately to the scene in "Out of Town" when Don was laying beside Betty trying to ease her into a restful sleep. He told her to close her eyes and relax......then told her she should think of putting her hand in the cool sand under her seat to further her descent into full relaxation....
I think he was trying to slip away from the stressful situation he was dealing with at home and at work. While watching Sally's teacher dance barefoot, he dropped his hand under his seat to further his journey away from there.....
What do you say? I know there are others. What is your interpretation of the scene?
I can tell you, I personally do not believe he has any romantic or lustful thoughts toward the teacher. Do you?

I'm beginning to question if the new baby is really Don's. In Season 2, Betty did have an affair in the back of that bar, but how do we know it was her FIRST affair. Despite his hidden past, no one knows Don's character as much as Betty does. I'm sure on some level she knows that he won't change which is why she struggled with wanting to take him back. In Season 3, it seems as though she has just accepted her fate in her marriage and accepts that Don is a cheater. When Sally finds that stewardess pin, she didn't question how it got there. Given his past affairs for so many years, you would think that she would become even a little suspicious. Betty is not as naive as we assume she is. I think she doesn't care what Don does because she's already decided to have her own affairs as well. I don't think this new baby is Don's and I will bet that we will find that out before the season ends.

I just had a thought. I think most people have basically decided not to try to figure out the flashback opening, what exactly the significance is, and that we'll get answers later.
Now one thing that I couldn't figure in the offseason is if they were really going to have Betty pregnant. I wasn't able to imagine it, I think it just ties the Betty character down too much which takes away some conflict issues.
Here, in the flashback, it was a baby girl that was stillborn. Betty believes she has a girl.
See where I'm going?
Oh boy.

No one, including Matt, knows how MM will end (what year, storylines resolved or not etc.) but I was wondering what fans see as the ultimate fate down the road for our friends at Sterling Cooper.
I hope Don Draper integrates Dick Whitman and he finds peace, in California with Anna beachside watching the waves. I don't see him ending up with Betty. They will part when the kids are grown, if not sooner. I don't see her remarrying, or having a happy ending I'm afraid. She will be sad, somewhat bitter, and alone, wondering where her wonderful life went. The kids (boomers all, of course) will rebel to varous degrees, then settle into productive adults, though Sally may have lingering issues with substance abuse.
Peggy will open her own successful agency, and take Sal - now quietly out of the closet and happily partnered - with her. Kitty will not remarry but will eventually reconcile with the idea of Sal's life and remain friends. Peggy will marry late in life when she meets someone on an equal footing professionally who is not the least unnerved by a successful woman.
Ken will write a bestseller about his years in advertising, with SC as the thinly disguised agency, and Harry will pitch the novel to a network as a miniseries. Paul will end up teaching at a small community college, enjoying his role as a "professor."
Joan will be the Elizabeth Taylor of the group, married and divorced several times before living on her own. She may work in some way with (not necessarily for) Peggy.
Roger's lifestyle will not be good for him. Jane will dump him when she notices his health declining, perhaps early signs of Alzheimers or TIAs. Mona is not able to get beyond his betrayal and is not able to help him anyway due to her own problems but Margaret steps up to provide care for her father. Alice will have left money in trust for Roger's care, having wisely seen the trajectory his life was liable to take.
Bert cooper eventually retires to his ranch after SC/PPL is taken over by an even larger international conglomerate.
Helen Bishop, former Kennedy supporter, becomes radically rightwing in her later years. Glenn does not become a serial killer but an avant garde artist and heavy metal musician.
Pete and Trudy reconcile and eventually (after his mother's death) adopt several children. Pete discovers he enjoys being a father and is much better than his own. He advances through the company's various takeovers to become a partner.
Freddy works for Peggy for a while, then retires to try his hand at stock investing and makes a killing on Wall Street.
Duck Phillips disappears, never to be heard from again. Chauncey, on the other hand, wins best of show at Madison Square Garden for his new owner.

It's a long cold winter for many of us, so why not amuse ourselves by wondering what the characters were up to in 1961, the year that was "skipped" between Seasons 1 and 2. The writers gave us some clues: Don had an affiair with somebody named Sarah who works at Random House (thanks, Bobbie Barrett for that clue); Betty took up riding; Sal got married; Peggy took Don's advice and escaped from the hospital and went back to work; Joan met Dr. Greg; and Rachel Mencken married Tilden Katz.
But what else happened?

I keep getting this sense that perhaps Ken Cosgrove could be in the closet with Salvatore, except he will admit it to himself but tries very hard to project the opposite to the outside. I am not fazed by his loud comments, " So did you hear Kurt is a homo" " I knew they existed..." One of my friends in high school in the 70's did the same thing only more obnoxiously, -turns out he was gay. If the Ken character was really so repulsed by gays, why would he go over to Sal's house for dinner alone and enjoy himself. Do you think Sal's gaydar is working and that's why he is worshipping the K.C. engraved lighter he kept? Call me crazy but I wonder if we are getting set up for a big shocker scene between Ken and Sal next season or later.

Season 1 concerned Don Draper. Who he is and how he got to be where he is.
Season 2 concerned the growth of the women around Don Draper; principally Betty, Peggy and Joan.
In the final episode of S-1 (The Wheel), the arc of Season 2 was foreshadowed. Similarly, I believe the arc of Season 3 was foreshadowed in S-2.13 (Meditations in an Emergency).

Season 2 ends in the middle of 1962. In the following year, Betty Friedan's book "The Feminine Mystique", is published. Considering how the writers like to keep the setting for this story somewhat historically accurate, I'm hoping big things are going to happen with the female characters.

Hi- newbie here....
Love, love, love this show! i can't believe that the season is over. That being said,I have had a thought running in the back of my head throughout this whole 2nd season that Peggy & Don had been involved previously. Just certain scenes trigger the thought: when Don visited Peggy in the hospital & told her she must get out of there; Don calling her after his car accident; Peggy flippantly saying she's sleeping with Don. Anyone else have the same thoughts?

Someone mentioned it in another post. Think they'll jump two years into that? Certainly, the British have invaded SC. And it occurs to me that by 1964, Don's daughter will be 10 and just about the right age where girls fall for cute boy bands....

It would be nice for season 3 to open with Don and Betty still sitting at the kitchen table, and have Don finally admit his whole life story to Betty. I do believe that Don and Betty have a deep love for each other, even after all that has happened.

After last night's episode, where Pete confessed his love and Peggy seemingly rejected him (I could've had you - but I didn't ect) and told him about the baby, what do you think their relationship will be like in season three? Will they keep things proffessional? Will Pete be angry? Or may there be a rekindled romance?

How old will Peggys baby be before Pete finds out that it is his? We went practically the whole season without much to do with the baby. I believe the baby is 2 yrs now. Is the priest trying to get Peggy to take care of the child? There doesnt seem to be a connection to Peg and Pete anymore. Has this story angle died?

Joan's only hopes-Paul and Peggy...
And not necessarily in that order. But, only they can save her from that miserable cad. (Roger should but he is "preoccupied".) True, Paul is a bit of a broken reed but we can hope on learning of her desperate fate he'll rouse himself. Peggy is probably the one who will first learn of the situation if Joanie can only bring herself to seek counsel. Trouble is Joan is so strong in her way it will take a lot to bring her to seek such.

Will the merger solve Roger's money problems and catapult Sterling Cooper to the upper echelons of advertising firms?
Roger mentioned that as a Junior Partner, Don is up to recieve over $500K. Is this money a lump sum sweetener, or the result of his percentage of ownership? If so, would it be logical to guess the other three partners lump sums would be bigger than his?

This just occurred to me as I was reading the 'Joan's Complicated Engagement to Greg' thread. I think Joan is really in love with Roger. As I said on that thread, Roger is really a horn-dog, but he's charming, witty, handsome and wealthy. He always talks to her with an almost wistful or tempered fondness. She's worked for in the office for 9 years and spent a lot of time with him.

Bert- Duck, I haven't informed our English counterparts yet, but we have decided to withdraw from the merger. We want to continue running SC in its current form. During negotiations we realised that our vision for SC is vastly different than what the Brits envision.

I just viewed The Jet Set again on Demand TV. I completely missed something the first 2 times I watched it. When Don introduced Pete to the Odd Rich People, Pete asked Willie if they had before, Newport? Then all 3 of them, Joy, Willie and the tall female, starting back away immediately and took off. Then later Joy mentioned to Don while they were in bed and she reading The Sound and the Fury that she took a Survey of Am Lit at Pembroke when they were in Rhode Island.
I hope the writers complete this story line for us in Season Three. I wonder if Willie and friends had some connection with Pete's dad. Maybe they were responsible for some of misspending of Pete's mom's money.
This show is well written - like the Sopranos, every time I watch an episode I pick up on something I missed before.

I want to know what people think will be the cliff hangers from season 2 that will force you to watch season 3. Here are some of my predictions for the end of season 2 and the beginning of season 3.
1. Don will come back to a job that is almost sold down the river and he will have to save it...so dramatic
2. Pete will find out about his kid with peggy...then he can adopt it making his wife and job happy without getting out of the family riches

Looks as though Roger is seriously trying to convince Bert to go for the Merger in the preview. He seems deluded, though, to think that nothing will change at SC. Bert's face looks like he's not sold on the idea. News today indicates that the third season is up for grabs. Matt Weiner is not signed on beyond season 2 and since the finale is coming on the 26th is it possible there will NOT Be a 3rd season? Here's hoping I'm wrong.

Again, Weiner gives a little clue to what the upcoming episode is about through the title of the episode. I love how Weiner is so multi-layered with his storytelling.
I recognized instantly that The Mountain King refers, on one layers, to "In the Hall of The Mountain King," composed by Edvard Grieg for Ibsen's play, Peer Gynt. I also instantly recognized the connection. What is Peer Gynt about? Well, mainly is about Peer struggling with his identity. This Wikipedia entry says it pretty clearly...more clearly than I can right now:

I have heard very little of this person on this board, but remember that season 2, episode 1 ends with Don sending a letter to someone he seems to have a connection with. He writes to this person after a passage in a book makes him think of him/her. I don't remember the name of the book or the author, but I do remember Don talking about the "catastrophe of my personality." Clearly, this thread has to be continued at some point in future episodes. It's unclear whether the person he writes to is the lady who confronted him in 1950 at the car dealership or connected to her, but that seems possible, if unlikely. Someone who understands "the catastrophe of [his] personality" is someone who has to know about Dick, and probably Don, too.

After "The Inheritance" finished we saw the preview for this coming week, in which Roger is in a luxiourous hotel room in a bathrobe with Jane who is also in a bathrobe and looks like she just got out of the bath. We then hear Roger tell her "I want to marry you, marry me," in which Jane replies with a coquettish smile "I dont want to get my heart broken." Then I believe it was yesterday evening, I saw a preview on AMC channel and it shows Roger in a heated discussion with I presume is a lawyer from either Mona or his side, but he gets mad, and the discussion becomes heated, and I heard him say he will NOT give Mona anything.

New take on Adam and Dick...And the maligned (?) Mrs. Whitman?
I've noted before we've never seen Dick's stepmother as anything but dignified (at the train station to meet "Dick's" remains), sympathetic (toward the hobo), even kind (radiantly offering Dick his new brother as Dick turns away)... Since we have been increasingly proven deceived by the image of "Don Draper" as a man of character and trustworthiness, maybe the situation with Adam was far different than Don/Dick's harsh references to Mrs. Whitman suggested. Dick hated his stepmother for reasons we naturally assume had to do with her rejecting him, treating him as second-class, possibly abusing him...But we have no proof of that expect in poor Adam's hangdog, whipped demeanor and sad end. Maybe though the true story is quite different. Adam wouldn't be the first young brother who worshipped a wild older one and Dick's attitude toward Mrs. Whitman could be totally unfair...Given his deceptions and lies, she may have been the best thing in his life until she saw him destroying Adam and turned against him...Or perhaps she was the one person his lies couldn't deceive, though she loved him. It'll be interesting if we ever learn all Dick's hatred toward her was based on his inability to deceive a woman who cared for him and that in fact he was Adam's true destroyer...A version of James Tyrone, Jr. hating and loving his younger brother.

Despite her incredible beauty - I see Betty starting to experiment with all the new products and lifestyle options soon to explode on the marketplace. As Don's philandering knows no limit, Betty will be testing the waters of life outside Ossining's lovely 'old town'. She's no stranger to the city and is having the crash course of wake-up calls. I see Don pulling the plug on the 'damn stables' and Betty will soon tire of piaffing through the afternoons. Hi, new poster here. I saw on another thread that there was speculation about Betty rebounding by some kind of 'Belle de Jour' scenario - I've been thinking this since the first episode this season - I can definitely see her, especially in her current state of mind, getting back in touch with her 'party girl' ex-roommate, finding out more about the biz, and after lots of conflict, curiosity, contempt for men and complete despair, she'd ask to be set up with a client....

O.K., this is starting to really bug me. Why hasn't Betty gotten that desk drawer open? As angry as she apparently still is, and having found nothing in his closet, I would think she would be down there in that study with a hammer and screwdriver banging away at that lock - forget that lame kitchen knife business. Also, is it likely Don would leave the box of memories there for her to find? Could he possibly have forgotten it is there? Could Betty be afraid of what she might find and can't quite bring herself to really attack the drawer for fear she might find something that will force her to take the final step and end her marriage?

I don't think of him ending up with her, because she's not his usual caliber of knockout. He's also preferred older women up until now. Clearly, Peggy too sees Don as a father figure, the father she lost. That idea has been given to us in a rather heavy-handed way. But clearly, Don and Peggy also have a connection. Both worked their way up; both aren't we're they're supposed to be. Both are extremely vulnerable, and thus respect the vulnerabilities of others, as was shown by their reactions to Freddy's alcoholism.

Since things seem pretty desperate, suppose Dick more or less gave up, and told Betty everything, even about Dick Whitman, not really expecting her to understand or forgive and agreeing she has no reason to but at the end of his rope and glad to have it all off his chest at last. I wonder if it could be made believeable that she might find the compassion and empathy to understand and forgive him. It would make for an interesting couple of episodes and probably involve some difficult writing and acting, still stranger things have and do happen in real life. Could Betty do it and could they put their lives back together after that? I imagine Don will not and they will either break up or he will confess a little, just enough to satisfy her, and go on concealing the rest, with the Drapers barely and colding staying together for the childrens' sake. Lucky kids....

I believe she said something along the lines of "So that's why he's never hit on me" (yes, I know that terminology is wrong for the times and the gal - just can't remember her exact words). Well, what do you think the chances are that once she gets wind of the fact he is on the outs with his wife, she will make a play for him? Would her affections for Roger hold her back? Would her highly suspect affections for her doctor hold her back? Would anything hold Joan back once she really set her sights on a man? Somehow, I think Don would meet his match with Joan.

Why does Bert call Roger "peanut"? And why does he have a picture of Roger on his desk, and no one else, not even his deceased partner (Sterling)? That nickname gives their relationship an aura of something more than being Roger's father's "partner" in an advertising firm. Has anybody else ever wondered about when Sterling Cooper started, and what happened to Roger's father, especially since his name is listed first in the partnership?

Will she have a fling with Ken Cosgrove ( his character needs a fuller story line - I like him) and inspire him to write a bestseller about the folks in the advertising business ala "Peyton Place"?
Will she seek the comfort of a Daddy figure and go for an older man? Not Roger, probably, as she would surely recognize him as another cheating husband, and she wouldn't want that, would she? Besides, that would expose her to the wrath of Joan - although THAT could be interesting. How about Duck - she knows he is single, and he brought her flowers. I could see him consoling her until she decides what she really wants. Perhaps she will be his great love, and her loss will drive him back to the bottle and a "Lost Weekend" kind of storyline as he drunkenly wanders the streets of NYC desperately seeking Chauncey.

I swear I touched nothing and the darn post got away from me! As I started to say, Joan strikes me as a pretty controlling office manager who rules the lowly secretaries with an iron fist in an metal gauntlet. I think it would have been entirely in character for her to have tried to find Peggy and ask her why she did not come back to work after having been given a promotion. Don Draper went looking for her and found her, why not Joan? She might not have actually talked to Peggy, but if Joan contacted Peggy's family, they just might have been in such a state of shock over the unexpected pregnancy and birth that they would have spilled the beans to Joan, especially if she came across as Peggy's sympathetic friend. We know she is very good at worming things out of people if she suspects something. I feel sure she would have suspected something when Peggy did not show up for work as expected.

Pierre Cardin was very popular then
Givenche
Pucci!!
Mary Quant
I say let's have an account with one of the fashion greats of the time and bring in more designer fashion to the show. (Not that their fashion is not fantastic already. But, the men are wearing Disigner $1,500.00 plus suits. Let the women also show off Great Designer clothes starting from Peggy. How could this play out?

Who's betting that it's Anita at the receiving end of Peggy's wrath when we hear her shouting...."You couldn't keep your mouth shut!!"""" Strong words from our Peggy since she normally has such a flat affect. Does anyone think that she erred by doing her pro bono CYO dance flyer for Fr. Gill without checking first with Don? Recall that Fr. did say to her "ask your boss" prior to asking for her help. I was so taken aback (and thrilled) to hear Peggy raise her voice in anger that I missed the rest of the clip. I kind of hope it's worm boy Pete who's getting a verbal bitch slap but I know it's unlikely to happen at this point.

As Fr.Gill's call to God blends with Peter Paul and Mary, Don sits with his beer silent and alone in the Sterling Cooper Kitchen after hours.
I think he's trying (without the lord's help) to find his way. He is determined not to lose his marriage over this meaningless fling with Bobbi he didn't initiate. Not when he couldn't end it for Rachel. No, he's not going to become "Duck Draper" over this. He knows it will cost, but he will have to "close big" to reverse Betty's decision. And that means only one thing: somehow manipulating Jimmy into taking back what he said and apologizing to Betty.
Or maybe not. What do you think Mad Maniacs? Is this really the end of the Draper's twisted fairy tale? If not, how will Don fix it? Is "six months leave" (the title of ep9) a hint of a coming separation or flashback to his early Don Draper days that he'll draw on in his quest to "close" Betty back into the marriage?

The title of each episode always sums up the theme or recurring images in the episode. They always make me wonder what's to come in the new episode, but you don't know what they mean until after the show is over (when they suddenly make perfect sense). I'd like to know other fans' speculations and predictions about the significance and symbolism in the next week's episode title.
Does the title refer to a new insight into Don's military experience? Are they going to explore what happened while Peggy was in the hospital (for 6 months perhaps)? Are they going to jump six months into the future? What do you think?

Roger asked Jane where she lived - she coyly told him her address was in the files. Now without a computerized data base, Roger would have had to ask Joan for the file -oops! So I think he only pretended to save Jane's job, getting her address in the process, then he never talked to Joan about reinstating Jane on Monday. "It's all about the chase".

Would a divorce constitute a step backward? Is this something Don is constitutionally capable of handling? What will other people think of a divorced Draper? Will that destroy their image of him? Form a chink in his mystique? Or is "going forward" more of a psychological technique, that involves not looking at the Dick Whitman origins and implications, than about a drumbeat of success? But isn't being Don Draper and not Dick Whitman intrinsically about success and image, just as being married to Betty is?

I don't know why but when Duck (I think that is his name the guy who abandoned the dog a few weeks ago) arrived for the dinner party alone without a date, I noticed he brought flowers for Betty and the thought went through my mind that he would be a good person for Betty to be with. Both she and he have been hurt by their spouses, both are vulnerable and both are suffering from the loneliness of being alienated by their spouses. Also they are suffering from severe emotional distress and are on the verge of breaking down. It would be interesting to see if they seek comfort in each others arms. And wouldn't that be a kick in the pants to Don's competitive nature. His wife taking up with a colleague and competitor. Maybe reality would finally wake this guy up to gamble he has been taking by toying with his wife's affections.

What do you bet that Joan will get fed up with the doctor and decide to go for a career beyond the secretarial arena? She is obviously very intelligent and competent. The doctor doesn't even care if she can talk. He intends to run her life. She is going to get tired of it, and move on. Besides, he's obviously boring sexually - probably very conventional but thinks he's a stud (like most men).

Someone please tell me what you think Don's dialogue with Duck meant! Duck comes into his office talking about how he was looking into the binoculars and when asked by Slattery if found anything unusual, Duck says, "a refridgerator was floating in the water....What? Then Don says if we give you any more confidence you are going to explode. What????This is after he was spiraling so badly in previous episode. What goes there? I can't put this down!!! Any answers out there??

Several contributors have mentioned using the IMDB for clues as to who will and will not appear in future episodes of Mad Men. For example Jane Seigel is not listed as a character after EP-7 and some have stated that this is a sign that she will no longer be at SC. Take this with a grain of salt. For example the IMDB page for the EP-8 does not list Mark Moses/Duck Phillips as appearing in the episode. However he is in all of the previews shown on AMC for EP-8.

In this episode, everyone seems to want what they can't have...the natives are restless...
We're definitely in for a sea change....as we get further into the 60's, more cultural changes will be seen and they will be appearing more and more, I think. This week alone: the focus on the "youth market", who doesn't want to be told what to do, juxtaposed with the mention of the SDS...the gay storyline developing...littering (Lady Bird Johnson was the force behind that campaign in the 60's; Beautifying America)...Kitty wants to be seen as her own person ("Some people think I'm very interesting")...the Rothko painting...can Pop Art be far behind?....etc.

Don didn't deny his relationship with Bobbie to either Jimmy or Betty. While Jimmy's attack was spontaneous, we know that Don is very good 'on his feet'. It's one of things that make him successful - he always has an answer. . He appeared speechless. I think it is somewhat out of character that he didn't defend himself to some degree.
Betty and Don will discuss the events, but I expect him to deny everything Jimmy said. Don Draper seems to be a 'that's my story and I'm sticking to it' kind of guy.
The selection to close the show with Brenda Lee's song was brilliant.

Wouldn't it be fabulously twisted if Pete turned out to be a psychosexual killer? Pete is one creepy Mo Fo! If eyes are the window to the soul then he is damned. And he'd go to any length to not be found out as the cowardly, lying slimeball that he is, whether a real threat exists or not. He does have a small paranoia problem. So maybe the blonde Maidenform model will be found dead with a tie around her neck ? I know, I know...this would be going way over the top. But any thoughts?

Well, what do you think will happen in #7 -
Will needy Betty meet secretly with slimey Jimmy, and will she get more (or less!) than she bargained for?
Will Peggy rise or fall in the office after her dolled-up naughty night on the town with the boys?
Will Joan reveal a continued torch for Roger, and will he make a renewed move on her - or seek a new conquest?
Will Pete contract VD from that one night stand?
Is Duck found splatted on the pavement or soaking inside a whiskey bottle?
Is Don a head case or heart case?
These and other possible developments are yours for the imagining - let's hear what you think we'll see!

For all the MM readers who hate unbridled speculation, I apologize in advance.
But I've been going over in my head that final scene of Don in the mirror; it was so unsettling. Some posters have suggested Sally's line about not talking so Don doesn't hurt himself caused him to flash back to a potential attempted suicide by Don. Others have suggested that Don's hospital visit to Peggy may suggest that at one time he was institutionalized as well. At first glance, it's hard to imagine Don Draper attempting suicide -- despite his issues, he's become adept at desertion/reinvention. But thinking about Dick Wittman, and how emotionally fragile he seemed in those Korea flashbacks, some of this makes more sense. All excellent thoughts from comments, and made me think deeper about the show. Thanks.

This is probably going nowhere, but seeing Don wrapped in a pink towel got me to thinking (after I mused that my husband would kill me if I ever bought pink towels):
Pink Elephant
Peggy in Pink on Easter
Peggy in Pink while "hiding" Bobbie
Twin in Pink undergarments just before Roger's heart attack.
Betty in Pink at the restaurant meeting with Bobbie and Jimmy
Trudy in Pink towel after Pete's dad died.
Was pink just a dominant color back in the 60's (even appliances were pink) or does MM use it to signal an important clue in the scene? Do I need to get a life?

We're about half way through Season 2, so I think it's time to compile a list of what we would like to see happen the rest of the season (of couse, by now, all the scripts have been written and episodes filmed, but it's still fun to dream). Here is my list:
1. The return of Helen Bishop and her son, Glenn.
2. A Halloween episode (perhaps combined with a Cuban Missle Crisis episode).
3. A Christmas episode complete with aluminum tree and color wheel.

I just had a thought. Many posters have suggested that what it would have taken to get out of the hospital was for Peggy to have divulged the father for the adoption papers. This is how, many have claimed, Peggy's mother and sister knew she had an affair with a married man. However, if Peggy had indicated that Pete Campbell were the father (or Don Draper for that matter) Peggy's family could trace the affair to the office. My new thought is that perhaps Peggy gave the name Dick Whitman since--if I recall straight--she handled that box of photographs before giving them back to Don (from Pete). What do others think?

Episode Detail: A Night to Remember - Mad Men

If Duck is planning to jump out the window, he may have put Chauncey outside to keep him from also jumping out to follow his master. I watched the parts again featuring Duck, and it certainly seems as though the plot may have been moving towards his suicide. Don may wonder if he could have behaved more graciously, and he may also wonder if his own life will end up like Duck's.

Whoa! At the very end of Epi 6, was Don about to suffer a break with reality as he looked at himself in the mirror? What or whom did he think he saw - either looking back at him or in his mind's eye? Is his soul starting to get sick of itself? Or was it just the awful feeling that he was going to have a coronary and wanted to spare his daughter from witnessing it?

I know some posters have said that there is an overreaction to Duck putting his dog out, but it really seems to bug a lot of people. We didn't hear screeching tires and a yelping dog, so he's still out there on the streets of NY. I'm guessing that Pete finds him on the street and then brings him home to Trudy to help her get over not having a baby. Just a guess. Anyone want to speculate?

Did Director of Account Services Herman "Duck" Phillips go out the window after he let his dog go off it's leash? His wife and family have put him behind them, he's got nothing to offer Don and he's at the edge of going right off the wagon. And the previews look like there's a scene with a bunch of SC folks looking shocked out an office window.

If I gather right from the previews, it looks like our Don could at last be busted...And by (gulp) Jimmy ("I go home and I laugh at you.) Barrett.
I wonder if Bobbie spills the beans or he's just guessed. Still, if Don is caught at last, better to be caught with Bobbie than a woman like Rachel. He could explain Bobbie to Betty as a cheap affair by an overstressed guy trying to please a tacky seductress whose husband happens to be important to SC...Rachel would be very tough to explain.

What is up with Don not having much cash in his wallet? I only notice that because it came up more than once in the last episode. His life is becoming almost schizophrenic as he balances the various compartments, but I wonder if he has another secret we don't know about, and it is taking his cash on hand. For all we know about his past, he might have fathered a child, and is supporting it. How much spending cash would a man of his career and time have carried?

I had an AHA moment about Mad Men while sitting in church today. I am bound and determined to have an AHA moment about church tonight while watching Mad Men!
Pete and Trudy are going to raise his "whore child" just as Don/Dick's father and his wife raised him. Here I thought this theme would play out with Don having a love child with Rachel, but now I see it will play out with Pete. Don will hate Pete even more because he will associate Pete with his father. Wow. That's brilliant!
What are Don and Betty doing for birth control? What was available then? They seem to do it rather spontaneously eliminating the possibility of putting in a diaphragm, etc. Could he have had a vasectomy by then? Is she sterile?

Since there seems to be some possible foreshadowing that at some point Don Draper may make a run for it if he feels he needs to carve out a new life, I was just wondering what others thought he may do in another life. I was thinking that because he's already been called a liar by the Beatnicks because of "the lies he spins in advertising" an unlikely spot for him to end up (one where no one would think to find him) would be hangin' with a bunch of hippies on Hate and Ashbury. He would be in his 40's by then. He could grow his hair long and protest the corporate machine that made him such a hollow souless shell of a man. He could hang with Timothy Leary at the Summer of Love, and probably run into Midge at a Dead Show tripping on acid. You have to admit he seemed to like the Mary Jane in the episode with the Beatnicks. It would be a total contradiciton of his current self and lifestyle.
