Mad Men Season Posters

Here's a short post I did comparing each seasons poster. When looked at all together they do kind of follow the show. What does this years tell us? http://www.elisesramblings.blogspot.com/2012/01/mad-men-posters-through-time.html

ANYTHING ON YOUR MIND?

Join the Quote Game Volume .44

This volume of The Quote Game is initiated in honor of Inspector Harold Francis Callahan, SFPD, and his preferred weapon, the .44 caliber Smith and Wesson Model 29 revolver. Highly effective for center-punching psychotic "Natives of Scorpio" whenever necessary.

Joan fertility window question

Joan has sex with Roger under a stairwell, immediately after being mugged. I know that's the first thing I would want to do! She goes to Roger later, and says she's Late, very Late, that her husband left for basic training seven weeks ago and that if she's pregant it could not be his. What is very very late? Two weeks? Hubby's sperm could stay alive in her fallopian tubes for 4 or 5 days post coitus. That is now six weeks ago. So she misses one period. Why is she so sure Roger is responsible. Also, it's icky in the extreme to have public sex in tacky places.

Cosmetic enhancement, padded out figures

Am I imagining things or did Januray Jones have her lips done? They look poutier and cuter S4. Also, is the Joan actess padded out a bit for the stripper figure?

New Mad Men Poster Sparks 9/11 Controversy: Is the Ad Insensitive?

I understand the connection to the original graphics. But, as a New Yorker, sadly, I think it is inappropriate and they could've come up with something different and as effective. We are still very sensitive. Probably always will be. What are your thoughts?

Nora Paradiso asks: What is your all time favorite scene of Mad Men?

Maybe you can help me out on this one!! Let us know why!

Polyester

The introduction of polyester comes mostly in dresses worn my Peggy and Megan. The coral colored dress Megan has on when Don annonces the engament is a good example, working woman's wardrobe was shifting to no iron poly. Peggy has worn some interesting
polydresses. They are so
determindly functional. One piece dresses with a zipper up the back. Not a suit, not a skirt set. Just step in, zip and your off.
I never enjoyed wearing poly, no matter what kind of deoderant, anti-persperant, or perfume or cologne worn, the end of the day, or even the middle of the day, the fabric smelled. Expose it to cigarette smoke and the effect is amplified. The stuff smelled.
And it seems Joan stays with her wool and or cotton dresses with an internal sheath.
I wonder if in Small Kisses there will be an introduction
of mini skirts. And perhaps a pixie
cut or two.
If S4 ended in Oct of 65, there has to be secrateries starting to wear more mod fashion, including pants.
Inclusing bell bottoms.

I wonder if LSD will be broached as a recreational drug
or even psycholgical tool.

What is in a name?

So in season 2 we have.. two Bobby's : Bobbi Barrett and Bobby Drapper and what about Margaret Sterling and Margaret Olson. While there maybe no correlation between the two Bobbys (one is a little boy and the other is clearly not). We do see similarities between Margaret Olson and Margaret Sterling - both are young women, slender and brunette. One is a petulant child of privlage while the other is a noble, humble individual who is trying to work hard to gain respect. Thoughts any other namesakes?

The Title of Mad Men’s Season Premiere Is ‘A Little Kiss’

New Characters

Post your new character ideas here.
Terry: Lane tells Joan to get a new office manager. One is badly needed. He tells her that they need to clean up the act around the office, serious people only need apply. Joane hires Terry, 38 years old, married with three kids (successfully married and content with her life). She reminds you of your twelfth grade English teacher. Stop whining and get the job done. She decides that the current crop of husband seeking bimbos just doesn't type fast enough of take shorthand fast enough. They either come up to scratch or she is going to replace them. No more jumping to attention for the big boys. No more stocking their booze cabinets. No more women with time and money to do their hair in an upsweep evey day. No more mistresses getting jobs. Lane wants a truly professional operation.

Lane

He and Bert Cooper are the only two of this merry meeting of fools I could stand to work for. Lane and his father. Can you imagine being beaten up by a soon to be ninety year old man? Wow!
As to the fools, Don Draper would scream at me ONCE "Get in here!" and there would be conflict. All these bimbo secretaries bowing and scraping and hanging up Don's coat and hat make me sick to my stomach. Lane is a real businessman. Yet, even he blames a secretary when a florist screws up a flower order.

Kikced off the page by all those new threads, so here we go *up* again

What's the Character's Sign?

Mad Men

Doen anyone have information on the kama sutra painting in Burt Cooper's office in Season 3, episode 1 "Out of Town?" It is of a Chinese woman and an Octopus. I have been trying to find the name of the illustration and/or the name of the artist and have been unsuccessful. Even information about the book where the illustration can be found would be helpful. Thanks.

ineptitude in secretaries

Too many ineptitudes on the part of secretaries. Peggy interrupting a strategy meeting to inform Don, Adam is waiting. That would never, NEVER happen in a well oiled, high functioning partnership. Peggy would have been let go immediately. Well that day.
The gloss of the show overwhelms, the reality of corporate America.
My gut instinct told me that the show was smoke and mirrors.
And by that I stand.
Matthew Weiner has an overblown budget.
And I am with Jon Hamm who says it's time to get done with Mad Men.

Honestly. the issues of the threads are fun for fodder for the mind, but really, get a life.
I'll still play, as I really liked Cassandra's deconstruction of Anna Draper, however, conjecture is senseless. Weiner is Weinerizing us all.

Professor Needs Help

I'll be teaching Media Ethics this semester and I want to use episodes of Mad Men for class discussion. What episodes do you recommend?

Continuity errors

I'm a bit of a nitpicker. Post your continuity errors here.
First. Betty and Don have been married ten years and someone tells us Betty is 28. Yet, Betty is a college graduate. This means Betty married at 18! Continuity check!

Don Draper

He doesn't have a thread. He just has a Don's infidelity thread. Discuss Don Draper. Is he just a secret romatic guy who can't find the right woman? Abused? Tortured?
There are a couple of Betty threads. I think Don deserves his own.

I’m probably going to get blasted here but I am going to go out on a limb and predict that Don and Megan will get married in Season 5 and it will last. Here’s why:

When I re-watched Season 4, I noticed that, at times, when they were on screen together there was a striking positioning of them being side by side—in Beautiful Girls, after Miss Blankenship was carried out, Megan moved to Don’s side to comfort him, in Blowing Smoke they were walking down the hall back to his office side by side with their coffee cups. In Tomorrowland they stood side by side when talking to everyone about their engagement, their posture in bed in California was most definitely side by side and similar in NY when Don proposed. Can’t say I ever recall seeing that connection with Betts and Don.
It might seem a little farfetched but I think that’s Matt Weiner’s way of foreshadowing that this relationship will be a partnership. It will be different because the times will be different—late 60’s versus 50’s/early 60’s with Betts. Megan is different and Don has merged a lot of Dick on the personal side. In Tomorrowland , when Joan asked them when they were getting married, Megan said “she didn’t know because they hadn’t discussed it” and Don tried to take charge by saying “soon”. I believe they will be discussing it because Megan won’t settle for less. The controversy will come with old school Don learning how to accept and embrace these changes in a marriage. I think he will with time but there will be fireworks along the way. Megan, too, will weather these challenges and they will stay together.
The remainder of the show will focus primarily on the business and some of the other characters—Peggy and Pete in particular. Don will, of course, be central but there will be no rehashing of the philandering husband and the cold, stepford wife. Matt has said in recent interviews that he doesn’t want to be bored and he doesn’t want the audience to be bored. He further said he thinks the audience deserves to not have the same thing happening for five years. That tells me he’s not going to go down that “same type of marriage” road. He has said Don needed to nail down his personal life to get back to the business and that will be Season 5 IMHO!!

Male Chauvanist slant writing MM?

Don Draper gets so much sympathy from woman after woman after woman. It's written that way. Betty gets little. She gets called a narcissist but Don is a victim. Everybody has sex every six seconds. Every women is a girly hooker except Betty and Peggy and a few older secretaries. Is MW the only writer? Is he totally pro Don prejudiced?

Is it 30 Rock or Mad Men?

So watching a re-rerun of 30 Rock and the Jack Donnehy character is torn between two women an older flame from his past or a younger woman (which he eventually marries but is kidnapped in North Korea).

Is Meagan another Betty?

Don described Betty as sweet and happy, when he first married her. Detractors of Betty think she was always angry. Not so. Is Meagan just her clone (vain and girlish)? I see Meagan as a clone of Betty at 19. It's not Dr. Miller it's sweet girlishness that turns Don on. Betty has had that all sand blased away by Don's cheating. What will Meagan be like in ten years with Don?

Carla

why has the actress who plays Carla never been interviewed or even mentioned int he full cast list? I find this oversight amazing and I am caucasian! She played such an important role as an ongoing character, even if her part was small....her presence was indelible.

Matt Weiner on Mad Men Season Five: It’s ‘Every Man for Himself’

Ooops! Here's the link!

http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2012/01/matt-weiner-on-mad-men-season-five-its-every-man-for-himself.html?mid=379387&rid=122573098

Matt Weiner on Mad Men Season Five: It’s ‘Every Man for Himself’

A little teaser...very little! (I love Jon Hamm, but I think he didn't mean to say "enervating" in the second to last paragraph...maybe "energizing?")

What's your favorite episode of Mad Men?

My favorite would have to be from season 3 (though not a fan favorite) "Love Among the Ruins" Why? because at the surface you think its another episode about family and Peggy hating on Ann-Margaret. But I think its about Aging and Love - its subtle because you have Don trying to please a very Pregnant Betty by having his father in law live with him (saving his marriage for one of the last times after he disrespected Betty in Season 2 by disappearing and stepping out). Then you have Peggy beginning to realize that small talk can attract the boys (when done right like Joan), then we have Betty's realization that despite her difficult relationship with her Father - "Marrying that Joker" that as an adult child she must step in and out all the differences aside and take care of him as a dutiful daughter. Oh and the campaign to demolish Penn Station (its old and decayed) and must be replaced by a shiny new station that we will love because its new".
My second favorite would be from Season 1 Red in the Face. A classic.
