Talk: Mad Men: October 2011

WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE NEW SEASON? Charatcer returns? Situations? Anything at all!

For starters, I'd sorely love to see much more of Duck Phillips, a fascinating and complex character, brilliantly portrayed by Mr. Moses.

Secondly, need to have Bettes come to terms with her inner demons. Otherwise her act is "getting old," so to speak.

Lastly, bring back Sal Romano, another interesting character played with charm and aplomb.

Girl on the cover of the Israeli magazine?

I meant to ask this sooner, but, better late than never, right, Stolen Kisses??? This will not upset you because it takes MM totally seriously, and treats it as a sacred object.

So the girl on the cover. Isn't that CLAUDIA CARDINALE? I'd bet my last stolen kiss that it is. And, if it is, how did they get away with it?

The end? Mad Men 1970

A recent thread talks about how Mad Men should end? not sure but here is my take of Episode 12
In the second to last episode of Madmen (Episode 12 starts with Roger's retirement from the agency). His third heart attack in Easter 1970 did not kill him but slowed him down considerably. His daughter Margaret (they have grown closer since the birth of her son) urges him to leave SC(Campbell) Draper Pryce and he follows his daughters advice. His wife Mona has remarried, He is now separated from Jane who has proven to be useless since the third heart attack. Jane has moved to Laurel Canyon with her two year old daughter Louise.
Peggy has finally been nominated for that elusive Clio, as senior copy Chief she has taken over much of Don's day to day responsibilities. "You are a shoo-in Ms. Olson, her secretary Anna Maria , exclaims. She is engaged to Abe (who in 1968 dodged the draft) and is now in Canada. Pete (now a partner sends her flowers for the clio nomination).
Don has considerably grown older - his hair now more salt than pepper has wrinkled and gained weight. "Lay off the Booze, Cigs and Stress" his doctor advices unless you want to end up face down on your door step one of these days. The women in his life, Megan, Sally, his ex wife Betty, and Stephanie have added to the stress. He suffers his first heart attack during a memorial day argument with Sally over lying about spending the night at her boyfriends house (and her drinking). Megan is yelling at DOn for not paying attention to her and her condition - she is pregnant".

Hello Everybody! I'm back in LA and ready to Discuss!!!

WARDROBE

I AM SO GLAD THAT SOMEONE HAS FINALLY HAD THE GUTS TO SHOW THE EARLY SIXTIES AS THEY WERE WITH GARTERS AND STOCKINGS. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Join the Quote Game Volume 37

On this the last night of the 2011 World Series, I initiate Volume 37 in honor of the late Casey Stengel.

The Ol' Perfeser was retired by the Yankees after Bill Mazeroski's home run gave the Pirates a 10-9 win in Game 7 of the 1960 series (I was three years old).

They come in threes, you know

Watching an episode like the Rejected or Waldorf Stories, you can't help but see similarities between our Trust Fund babies: Pete Dykman Campbell, Lane Pryce, and even Roger Sterling. Both Pete and Lane grew up with overbearing, cold, and straight up nasty Daddies. They both have this need to belong to be validated, pat on the back for a job well done.
One line that comes to mind that line from the episode "The Waldorf Stories, when Lane apologizes for not letting Pete in on Kenny's return, "But I am fond of you" Lane says to Pete. I think the reason why he chose Kenny over Pete in season 3, I think because he saw too many similarities between Pete and himself.

Roger is something of a mystery - we can only imagine his father expressing the same disappointment as Horace Mann Sr (in The Arrangements), we could see Roger's father scolding him for being a child about to inherit his Daddy's empire but lacking the focus or discipline to learn shop. I think that Pete and Lane have a lot more in common (what with their social awkwardness and need to be part of the pack). Oh and they both have a knack for spoiling surprises "Johnny Walker Red, Its a Cantaloupe", "Its a Po-lo-roid"

Aaaaaack!

Has it been a whole year?!?!?!

Jane Sterling vs. Megan Calvet (soon to be Draper)

So there was a post comparing Jane to Joan. Apart from the fact that their name starts with J, the both love / (d) Roger, and they were secretaries there really is nothing else that they have in common. Besides its not a relevant comparison. IMHO the real contest is Megan vs. Jane as they started as lowly secretaries and elbowed their way to that coveted MRS. Degree. Both are college grads, young, brunette and thin. And evoke feelings of anger (yes but its controlled anger) from the other women in the office (Joan and Peggy). We have seen Joan and Jane confrontations. The big question is for season 5 is Megan going to be a liability for Don (someone who causes problems for him in the workplace and comes between him and his children). I don't buy into the Mary Poppins/Maria Von Trapp image that she portrayed (Megan for Don is a bit of an ink blot - he sees what he wants). I do see her becoming a wedge between Don and Peggy (accusing him as others have of having an affair with Peggy). while Megan saved Don from a life of self destruction Don is no an ordinary Divorced Dad, needing a "home cooked meal and a clean house" this man has baggage that would take more than 1000 Public Storage units to fill.

All the parallels between MM and "The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit

I'm watching TMITGFS on Netflix and it's feaking me out how similar it is to MM!

AMC Encores 10/16/2011

Does anyone know if AMC aired MadMen on 10/16? My DVR did not pick it up this week. I was expecting Season 3;Episode 9 Souveniors but it didn't air or didn't record. Looking on the AMC website, it looks like the next episode to air is on 11/6 but seems to be a season 4 episode. Does anyone know what's up?

Music at the end of episode 3, season 4

What tune was playing at the end of the episode when they were sitting at the table getting ready to start 1965?

How do you think MAD MEN should end?

Don Draper and DB Cooper:
One in the same?

How the TV series ‘Mad Men’ should end

by Johnny Dee

Don Draper is the star of the TV throwback series Mad Men which takes viewers on a journey through time to the advertising world of 1960’s Manhattan. Its TV debut (July 2007) was set in March 1960. By the end of Season 4 (October 2010), the storyline had reached late 1965. (Season 5 is scheduled for early 2012).
DB Cooper is the infamous Boeing 727 skyjacker who in 1971 bailed out with $200,000 ransom cash somewhere over southern Washington state and was never heard from again.
Don Draper, Jon Hamm’s character in Mad Men, works for an ad agency Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. He often calls his now ex-wife Elizabeth ‘Betts’. Draper has always been a man of mystery having assumed a new name following his Korean War days (his actual name is Dick Whitman) and among other recurring idiosyncrasies surrounding him are his debonair and adventuresome ‘man in the gray flannel suit’ persona which appears to be not unlike that of skyjacker DB Cooper.
A three-season contract deal was recently penned between the shows producer Matthew Weiner and AMC-TV which should bring the conclusion of Mad Men upon us sometime in 2014. This also puts the projected last season directly in the wheelhouse of the early 70’s.
The striking similarity between ‘Don Draper’ and DB Cooper first hit me after having seen Draper wearing sunglasses. It was then that I noticed he bore a distinct likeness to the police artist’s sketch of DB Cooper. Other parallels could be drawn from the symbolic image of Draper falling (or skydiving?) from the roof of the ad agency’s building at the start of every Mad Men episode.
With these similarities, how difficult would it be to imagine when the Mad Men series comes to its projected end in 2014 aka 1971, that Draper actually is in fact portrayed as the elusive DB Cooper? It certainly seems logical that D.B. Cooper (“Don” “Betts” “Cooper”) would have one last wild idea up his sleeve – to again run away and leave yet another life behind, this time as a skyjacking thief with a bundle of ‘startover’ money as he, Dick Whitman, aka Don Draper aka DB Cooper, makes a last ditch effort for his ultimate escape from reality and a new unblemished future of which he seems always in pursuit.
Mad Men ought to end its series on that sky-high note. Any other way would be … groundless.

PS: In the last scene of the last episode, my concept has Draper working as a car salesman in California leaving work for the day and tossing his tie and sport jacket in the open window of his yellow 1934 Ford coupe and the very last shot shows him cruising down the PCH sunset to his left. A Beach Boys song would be too predictable. Any ideas of what the final song should be as he inserts an 8-track into the lower part of the dash of his no-nonsense hot-rod? Some songs that might fit the closing scene: I Feel the Earth Move, It Don't Come Easy, and my favorite ... When You're Hot, You're Hot.

We have once again made it to 1000 posts in almost exactly one week, so here is Volume 36.

Replaying episodes

The last Mad Men episode AMC showed was Season 3, Episode 7. According to the listings on this site, Mad Men won't be shown again until November 6th. That episode is supposed to be mid-season 4. Are they not showing the 2nd half of season 3 and 1st half of season 4 at all?

Join The Quote Game - Volume 35

Since we are approaching 1000 posts in Volume 34 and I am enjoying the afterglow not only of Penn State's 13-3 victory over Iowa, but the Steelers' 38-17 victory over the Titans, I offer the gang Volume 35.

Mad Men

if AMC is smart they would pick up "The Playboy Club" that has been canceled by NBC. How great would it be to have 2 shows that are good old fashion t.v. like us baby boomers like! Forget all the reality t.v. come on AMC cater to us we will watch!

Roger Sterling

What the hell is wrong with him? I just don't understand what he wants in life. I'm beyond confused at why he married Jane. I can understand if he left his wife for Joan, he actually cares about her but he married Jane; a girl he doesn't even like. Why? And how is it that Mona seems so okay with it? Sorry for all the questions, I just want to know people's opinion about him. He makes me wonder.

Audio Commentaries on DVDs

I enjoy watching and listening to the commentaries on all the episodes, but the other day when I was watching the episode "The Chrysanthemum and the Sword", from Season 4, I heard a big inaccuracy when Matt Weiner said that the actor David McCallum had passed away. As far as I know David is still quite alive and can be seen each week on CBS's NCIS as "Ducky".
I do enjoy the commentaries especially when there are three or more people commenting. You get to learn all about the television industry from the inside, from behind the curtin.

Mad Men Season 4 Music

Is there anybody who can help me???

I'm looking for the song which is played on the 1 Disc of Season 4 in the main menu! Can't find anything ...

Mad Men & The Ed Sullivan Show

Mad Men and The Ed Sullivan Show have a lot in common. Mad Men coincides in an era when The Ed Sullivan Show was at its highest point. It was a fantastic era when families would get together in their living rooms to watch The Ed Sullivan Show every Sunday night. This kind of image was portrayed in the show. Throughout all the Mad Men seasons, the show made mention to and played the music of many popular acts that appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show including, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Sonny and Cher, and even the famous Kennedy impersonator Vaughn Meader in season 4. I would love to see Ed Sullivan get featured on this site, in any of their story lines or blog posts. I mean The Ed Sullivan Show played a huge role in 1960’s America, the period in which Mad Men is set. The Ed Sullivan website has featured Mad Men on their blog, talking about how both shows relate (http://goo.gl/T3DCO). I think it’s fair that Ed Sullivan gets featured on this site as well don’t you think?

What will happen to Don's career in the next 2 seasons?

Don Draper is the right man in the right place at the right time. But this is the slim window called advertising's "Golden Age" when Creative Directors and star Art Directors were strong enough to attract clients. It was also the age when Account Executives and their minions focus-group gurus (like Faye Miller) were in the ascendency — soon to shut the window on the "Golden Age."
We're also about to witness the explosion of Hippy Culture which held what Don does in the lowest contempt.
What will happen to Don? Can he bend with the winds? Will his already fragile identity crack under the pressures? Huge cultural and social changes are coming — and they're coming fast.
Where will life take Don?

Outtakes We'd Pay to See

From an idea I had in the current issue of "The Quote Game":

When "Mad Men" concludes in a few years and the final set of DVDs are released, I was hoping that MW would include a set of outtakes from throughout the production.

I suggested that in the "Peggy Faints" shot from "Guy Walks Into an Advertising Agency", Vince lets Liz slip through his hands instead of catching her cleanly.

Racy and lkd have already come up with several other suggestions.

What serious/intense scenes could turn hysterical with a prop malfunction, a blown line, or a slip/trip/fall?

OPEN THREAD

For general discussion. I opened a new one just 'cause I can and 'cause I'm tired of scrolling down to find the open thread. Also, 'cause I don't think I ever started one before, but that can't be true, can it? I've been maundering all over this Forum ever since season one of Mad Men. Hmmmm, I wonder just how many threads I have started over the years? If I could get into the archives, I might start counting. Did I say "maundering"? How very apt.

Here is what is missing from a description of Don's/Dick's background

There is a huge back in Don's background story. The flashbacks of Don's/Dick's life do not adequately explain how his experience as a used car and fur salesman gave him the creative, business, advertising and executive skills we see when he is in and/or conducting a meeting. The writers should cover this in another flashback.

Don Draper's infidelity

Just happened upon a chat thread asking the question- why does Don cheat? It seems that Don Draper cheats because the character is written that way.

Mad Men

Mad Men is the best TV show of the century. Let it be and live for ever! Can't wait to watching the next season. Everyone is perfect! The fashion/ the spirit/ the theme all are wonderful and thrilling, and very important for a great taste.
