DONS VIEW ON THE CHANGING 60S

Second part to my question abt Don and the changing 60's
The article after season 1 referred to Don wanting no part of the changes that were occuring. Said he looked backwards instead of forwad.

I thought he was known as a forward thinking guy? A free thinker. Or was this likely referring to his true self, not the construct of Don Draper. I recall the example used was him seeing something in Peggy and hiring her, despite her being female.
