Talk: Mad Men: May 2011
A show of gratitude
Sometimes I wonder how a TV show could teach me infinitely more than my parents have about values and the seemingly insurmountable disappointments of adulthood one must hope to avoid, but more often than not, come to accept. Perhaps it just reaffirms a practical sense of ethics that seems to have gone by the wayside, while exposing the flaws and glorifying the redemption of people being people.
I'm aware that people within the industry frequent this site as well as IMDb, and I just wanted to say to whomever is out there associated with this show, I really appreciate it. The season 2 finale brought me to tears and what I've seen of later episodes makes me worry very little about Weiner's absence from the project.
Please know, beyond the stylishness and esquire-factor, you're hitting home with me. The internet is so often a place for trolls, and maybe they'll tear this apart, but I just wanted to take a second to say thank you.
Season 1 Episode 8 : Old Time Religion Uncredited?
Hello folks!
I am convinced that the uncredited singer is none other than Robert Morse, but I can't find any information about it anywhere! Anyone have any clues? He certainly can sing and has sung in many other productions. =) Thanks!
Jon Hamm: Directing 'Mad Men' Season 5 Premiere
TV Line reports that the Golden Globe winner will direct the season five premiere of the 60s-set drama, following in the footsteps of cast mate John Slattery, who directed an episode last season.

I may be in rehab, but I'm still on top of things. So here's a new chapter.

Just bringing it back up!
Hey Maddicts! I met Jon Hamm when he was in DC for the White House Correspondents' Dinner - check out the photos!

Idea for final Mad Men episode
In the final moments of the final Mad Men, whenever that is, the producers should consider finding a way to weave in this: The Brotherhood of Man scene from How to Succeed in Business without really trying.
Here's Robert Morse's performance on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_29IeEeZqo
Not sure whether to have folks break character or to have one of the characters watching the actual movie or stage performance.
Regardless, my wife and I are having all kinds of fun imagining John Hamm and the gang belting out this number.
I'M BACK
I can't seem to find the log-in spot so I'm trying here. Just because I went away for a few days?
Imitation Mad Men?
I have been reading lately about two new TV shows set to start this summer or in the fall....."PanAm" and "The Playboy Club", both set in the 60s. I am thinking both these shows were only created to take advantage of Mad Men's popularity. Mad Men, of course, has already been there and done that when it comes to stewardesses and bunnies......can these shows deliver story lines to equal Mad Men's? Guess we'll see. I am planning to watch both shows, if only to see how they compare to Mad Men when it comes to the costumes and attention to period detail. Woe unto them if they don't measure up.....I am sure they will be hearing from disgruntled viewers aplenty. There are still Maddicts not convinced about the whole pantyhose issue. Think either of these shows will feature an icy blonde and/or a gorgeous redhead? I'm betting there will be an innocent young woman who will need to be shown how to serve drinks with a "coffee, tea or me" smile or while doing the "bunny dip." Surely there will be a "Joan" eager to give her advice. Since we Maddicts will have to wait ......OW! it gives me a pain to have to say this.....another year for our Mad Men fix, watching two new shows set in the same time period may help us through the dark time? Gee, do you think there will be lots of alcohol, sex and cigarettes?
HAPPY (DAY LATE!) 80th BIRTHDAY TO OUR "BERT"!!!
Yesterday was Robert Morse's 80th Birthday! He's a boyish 80! HAPPIEST OF BIRTHDAYS, MR. MORSE......AND HERE'S HOPING YOU'RE BACK IN S5!
A Mad Men Summer -1960's Style
It's pretty much summer and I know we all went a little crazy when we saw Betty tossing the picnic trash all over the park. But summers in the 60's were great. Here's my list of summer favorites that might not be seen today:
1. Real fireworks
2. Slip and Slides
3. Listening for and chasing down the ice cream truck as he went through your neighborhood
4. Riding your bike with playing cards mounted in the spokes of your bike tires
5. Campfires
6. Eating potato salad, egg salad and macaroni salad that sat in the picnic basket all day long.
7. Eating a whole popsicle by yourself without it being broke in half and shared with a sibling.
8. Catching crawdads in a creek without any parents supervising.
9. Saturday morning cartoons
10. Summer camps that were free and didn't require a physical or a 50 page liability form.
What are some of the things you remember about summer in the 60's?
I feel like I'm back home!
I can't believe how fast time is going by...guess that's part of getting older.
My favorite statement about life is "You can't make this sh.. up!"
I am so glad to see so many of my favorite Maddicts still here, and, it's great to see new members!
I have to start reading to catch up...
I've been watching my Season 4 set that finally came in April.
Can't wait for Season 5!!!!

Have fun with this while I'm gone. I wish I had a computer in the hospital to see what's going on.
Deconstructing Anna Draper
Disclaimer: MM fans who love Anna, take this thread as mostly tongue in cheek. Mostly!
Anna Draper is probably one of Mad Men's most beloved secondary characters. She is routinely praised as being a nonjudgmental, caring and decent well of salvation and trust for a man constantly living a gigantic lie. Fans love and appreciate her for what she did for Don, and Don clearly relied on her as a source of a stability. As her death approached, we clearly saw him come unhinged. When her spirit came to say goodbye, it gave him the impetus to try and turn his life around.
Now, for a moment here can I ask: Why?! Why is this woman considered to be so great? When you take a closer look at Anna, you realize that she is kind of a creepy, opportunistic weirdo.
First off, Anna is greedy. Her loyalty is only as good as the value of the greenback: Don had essentially been paying her off for over a decade. When she came and confronted him, the only way he was able to stop her from going to the police was by promising to support her for the rest of her life. In season 2 when he visited California and commented on how he loved the porch, she smirked and said "You paid for it". She knows that more luxury is to come because she holds all of his cards. Well, well.. blackmail! How do you like that, Dick?
By the mid 60s, Anna has become pretty used to her cushy life in California. We can safely assume that for the entirety of season three she was able to sit around her house without a job, smoke marijuana and play with tarot cards. When he visits in 1964, she looks at him and says, "I know everything about you, and I still love you". Really? Well would you still love him if you knew that he was broke and never going to be able to support you? Would you love him if you didn't have that porch? Its not like Dick murdered her ex-husband.. he was going to be dead anyway, and then where would she be? What if SCDP sucked up all of his expendable income and he had to put it all towards his kids and himself? I bet she'd get over Dick really fast..
Secondly, Anna is a terrible guardian and role model. Anna allows Don to drive her niece home without seeming to care at all about the potential consequences. She has no qualms about letting this young women be driven home by a man who is already lying to his kids about his entire life story, and had marital problems related to his infidelity. A man who can do lethal up-skirt grabs and abandon women tied to bedposts. She was also privy to their dance session at the bar, so I'm sure she knew what he was all about. Yes.. I'm sure he was just telling her to study hard and get a good job after college..
Not only that, Anna encourages her niece to smoke marijuana. What! What kind of role model is that? No wonder her sister is always second-guessing Anna's decisions.. they are always terrible! Thank goodness those Draper kids never got to meet her. Did we really want Sally to befriend someone who would give her drugs instead of candy and allow Glenn to drive her home? Thank goodness for Betty!
Finally, Anna is the main reason the Don Draper lie got as big as it did. This lady gave him cover to go on and be dishonest with Betty, his kids, his employers and clients. If she had turned him in, he may have gone to jail, but the consequences would have ended there. If Don's identity is revealed and SCDP fails because of it, then Pete, Peggy, Joans and many others will lose their livelihoods. Maybe Roger would suffer a fatal heart attack because of it. Had Anna Draper been alive, she would surely have been arrested for conspiracy. Put simply, she is directly responsible for ruining lives.
In conclusion, I would like to argue that Anna is possibly the most corrupt character on the entire show.
What do you think?
New Game
Just thought of a new one. Name movies and/or songs with either Mad in the title or Men in the title. See examples below.

It seems that this has been wanting for some time. So here it is. Please, no more short separate threads that could easily go here. Thanks.
WHAT IF IT'S A BOY?
OK, Let's do the name game here for boys. Remember that the name should be from a song and/or movie.
Hello

HAPPY 36TH BIRTHDAY, CHRISTINA!

new site config.
It seems, at least right now, that this is working well with Internet Explorer. I've never really felt at home with any other browser.
