Don's Apartment

Many people in both the press and the talk forum have described Don's new apartment as dark, drab, and depressing. But Matt Weiner states quite a different opinion in his interview on NPR's Fresh Air. Weiner says that he sees the place as a typical guy's apartment: simple and comfortable.

My own opinion is that Don has always lived in a place like this, at least metaphorically. Even in the Draper house, he was alone in many ways. He's a reflective person and works best when he has time to ponder the latest ad campaign. We've often seen him solo in public, as in the opening scene of the series.

I also think of the similarities to the lighing in Midge's apartment in Season 1--the contrasting dark and natural light with very little artificial lighting, a quiet place. The darkness and light of Don's pad suggests the dualism in his character: protector of women in the elevator at SC, but chronic philanderer; defending the integrity of his profession while parading as a dead man.

I believe that Don's apartment suits him just fine. What do other Maddicts think?
