Mad Men Living

It really is wonderful to read posts by like-minded individuals who enjoy the AMC production of Mad Men. Mad Men has certainly created a unique sub-culture in our society, as each of us appreciate the different elements of this award-winning show.
However, one glaring omission that I note is that none (or those who have shared their musings on this blog, anyway) have been inspired to display appreciation of the design elements of the show in their daily living. The classical lines and simplicity of the architecture has certainly inspired me and my fiancé to create our very own Mad Men townhouse. As a somewhat new homeowner, in a relationship with another "Maddict" (as they call us), we are constantly drawn to the same elements of design created in Mad Men. Commenting often, "look at this Mad Men sofa," "check out this Mad Men dining set." We don't just look, we buy; so now our townhouse is beginning to resemble a production set, right down to the drinking glasses! Coincidentally, BEFORE Mad Men ever aired I owned the platinum rimmed glasses that grace the DVD/Blu Ray cover of Season 3. We affectionately call them our "Mad Men" glasses.
And on a somewhat bizarre final note, our youngest cat Cicero has a striking resemblance to Pete Campbell (sorry Vincent, but it's true!) even his fur coloring changing to resemble a beard that Vincent grew in the recent off-season. Cicero's personality really shines through in Pete, especially when he and Trudy dance the Charleston. We call Cicero, our own "little Petey Campbell." With our other cat Caesar (big black Maine Coon) being more of a suave Don Draper type.
Like everyone else reading this blog I anxiously await the premier of Season 4, and am "madly" watching all Seasons prior to this so I have all the comings and goings straight when I tune in later this year.
A big thank you to the cast and crew for creating such a marvelous production. The only reason we subscribed to cable television. I mean, do you really need another reason?

will there really be a Season 4? I haven't heard word one about it as yet?

And I agree with the letter above..they do a wondeful job with everything...the sets, the clothes, the make-up...keep up the good work.

I agree Charmaine .. MM has def. made the old new again :-)

Mad Men episode aired 28 March, the use of light, plus sound! Effect: poetry. The scene of the loss of the Madison Square Garden account, simply amazing and disgusting. The "montag(e)" of Gene flushing the booze, another immense connotation.

There is so much to each episode that it's nice to come to this site and see what I missed!

I've got my 21 year old son hooked on Mad Men and he wants to know, "Where can I get the platinum rimmed glasses that grace the DVD/Blu Ray cover of Season 3?"

default userpic

I purchased our platinum rimmed glasses (red wine, white wine, martini, champagne flutes, and stemless drinking glasses) on close out from Pier One several years ago. The stemless drinking glasses are the ones featured on the front cover of the Season 3 DVD. Last Christmas, a cheap imitation (thinner rim) was on sale at Target (Richmond, VA). Seasonal item that I haven't seen since. Good luck finding them!

I have several late 50's/early 60's Eames era things in my home. One is a really cool orange tweed couch and the other is a complete set of bar ware. I enjoy them verymuch every day.

Just added another MM piece to our furniture ensemble on the weekend. A 3-piece Natuzzi sectional, red, on chrome legs. Sensational. Now Michael and I are styling...Very comfortable to sit and watch the MM reruns, sipping our preferred cocktails from our MM glasses...Life doesn't get much than this!

Charmaine and Peaches, you guys should post some photo links!

The only retro items I have are my parents' Heywood Wakefield dining set, china hutch with console, plus telephone table all in the Champagne finish. The finish was very worn when I inherited them, so they all needed refinishing badly....don't know if that affects the value, but it doesn't matter since I am keeping them and don't plan to sell any ever.

They still look "original" even though we did refinish them. I love the rounded silhouette of HW peices, utterly classic yet still contemporary.

I believe Heywood Wakefield has a website and sells "new" versions of their classic styles.

They are quite expensive which makes me happy I have originals (mine have straight legs not the curved on so many of their pieces shown on the site)

They also have some really neat fabrics....I'm thinking of buying a yard or so and recovering the chair seats.

Don't you just love living with things with history and memories?

Charmaine,
How about the Kitchen? You need the mid 50's to mid 60's Kitchen. Metal cabinets with color matching / coordinated appliances. Oh course, if you go with the 60's to mid 70's, you go with painted wood (pine) with retro colors, usually mixed (Pink and purple). My kitchen still has the metal cabinets that were installed in '58. Had to replace the top in the late 70's. I'm going to do a kitchen upgrade next year and replace the cabinets. Not sure what I want to do with the metals but will not want to throw them away.
One item i get a kick out of is relating to all the 'retro' office furnishings. My office has been in this same location since 1957. We still have alot of the original 1955 to early 1960's office furnishings including the couch in the entry and the conference room table.

Wow, I just googled "1960 kitchen" and the coolest pics came up....all pink, turquoise and grey....also a neat pic of Betty Furness standing next to her "You Can Be Sure If It's Westinghouse" icebox.

Those were the days. My Mom had a turquoise, pink and grey kitchen, with copper accents and appliances....beautiful....also a kidney-shaped dining table that my Dad made.

I love(d) the 1950's and '60's....wouldn't have wanted to grow up in any other time!

We "Boomers" are so lucky to have had all that.

Hi All!

Everytime I see the the Draper's kitchen it reminds me of mine when I was growing up. The lay out is very similar to the way ours was and we even had the the knotty pine cabinets with white formica counter top, but... we had the turquoise appliances. Mom even had turquoise canisters that held flour, sugar, etc. The kitchen sink was even turquoise. We also had the little shelves on each side of the kitchen window, like the Draper's. That is where the turquoise trinkets and salt and pepper shakers were displayed.

....funny isn't it jeffe, turquoise is really popular currently.....what goes around comes around.

I've always loved it whether it's in or out of style at any given time.

I think you're right about the sub-culture this show has created. With all the tacky reality show nonsense that's being crammed down our throats these days, I think people are actually latching on to a way of life that our society had lost.

Hello fellow Maddicts,
I realized after I posted on this blog, that I didn't mention what our kitchen looks like. Both Michael and I do remember the wonderful colors you mention, that were so popular in this era, however; it will only be the food we in our kitchen that will be colorful. I posted a detailed - perhaps too detailed - comment of what our town home looks like in the AMC post - "What You're Saying About Mad Men Decor.".... In short, it is white, with aluminum trim and frosted glass cabinet doors. Very mod, very stylish, and we can't wait to be finished.
Perhaps we should have a website that we can all share photos of our furniture/houses/artwork etc, and inspire each other!

Sounds beautiful, Charmaine.

I also have a white kitchen, with deep brown accents, it brings to mind a cup of Irish Coffee or a cup of cocoa with marshmallows on top. I was hesitant to go with the brown countertops (also a hickory wood floor, medium-light finish) but it has been great to live with so far (since 2006) and should be for quite a few years yet. Neutral enough, but not boring.

One can't go wrong with white, IMO.

Charmaine, Wouldn't it be a blast to host a Mad Men opening night at your place for Season 4? Complete with everyone in costume, the food, the cocktails, the discussions? Ahhhh, a girl can dream! :) If nothing else, please post some pics if you can!

I have been wondering how this would work in windows. This is really something that is very cool and fun. I love this website and I really appreciate this. Thanks
