I think it was implied that Shirley M.'s character had more than one affair with the men of "The Apartment" office. Just my opinion.

I wouldn't "nit-pick" as you say, if I weren't bombarded by what a genius Matt Wiener is and how he is such a stickler for details and accuracy.

And this is a rather large mistake. This is not "nit-picking," because anyone who saw the film would know that is not what happens.

Just the opposite, it was clearly stated how no one could get to first base with her.

Why do you people feel such a need to defend this show? They are human and can make mistakes, too. But this one's a doozey. Very sloppy. I mean, Joanne is supposed to have JUST SEEN the film and was upset about it. Yuch.

Way back, when Roger Sterling was discussing "The Apartment" with his lover, her name was Joan Holloway. In Season 3 her married name was Joan Harris.

Perhaps Matthew Weiner has set himself up for criticism because of claims of excellent research. There are far more experienced TV series creators who are careful to say that research is a starting point when writing stories.

Maddicts are willing to suspend disbelief while being entertained. Most of us have seen "The Apartment" recently and we discussed that back during Season 1.

Quite frankly, many of us enjoy re-watching our favorite MM episodes more than another viewing of "The Apartment"

It is not first mistake that has been made, and it won't be the last. Still the overall quality and attention to detail of the show is top notch.

If it wasn't for Mad Men, and the people who write on this Forum, I wouldn't have watched the movie.
It has now become one of my favorite early '60s flicks.

Yes The apartment is a classic. One I never tire of watching.

Like I said above, fans, the writers and producers of MM LOOOOVE to sit boast on and on about how accurate the show is. Well, you can't have it both ways.

I just watched the episode in question and thought the same thing since The Apartment (underlined or in italics, not in quotation marks) is also one of my favorite movies. However, as a teacher, I can testify that several people can read the same piece of literature or view the same movie and have several different interpretations or misinterpretations of it. That said,however, I agree that it was a huge mistake but one I am willing to overlook in light of the usual meticulous accuracy of this show--my absolute favorite on television.

You did not offend! Like I said, if we weren't bombarded with stories and praise for the scrupulous accuracy of Matt Weiner and his staff, if wouldn't have mentioned it. But under the circumstances this was a collassal mistake. Plus, a mistake like this bespeaks the writers "agenda," which is a capital sin. In this case it appears to be, "Let's just say something that makes out women to be victims because that's one of the themes of the show...we don't really care if that's what happened in the Apartment or not." No way around that.

You confuse me, dear. Yes, I understand that literature can be "interpreted," differently. Just as music or painting can. One cannot, however, interpret certain critical plot points. Ophelia committed suicide, she was not abducted by aliens. Smerdyakov murdered his father--he was not playing up to Ivan. Shirley McClaine's character simply did not "sleep around." This is made explicity clear.

Again, I would forgive this mistake if A) it was about a more obscure film (perhaps) and B) we weren't bombarded with accounts of the supreme attention to detail that Mr. Wiener strives for.

Honestly, if I met you and told you Rhett Butler was a Union spy you'd say I'd never read the book or seen the movie. Right? From the mistake about "The Apartment" it is clear that the writers did NOT see the film. Sloppy. Very sloppy.

I still am a fan of the show. I just don't want to hear about their remarkable accuracy, which has already been disproven many, many times, here and elsewhere.
