Talk: Mad Men: December 2009

Mad Men New Year's resolutions!

Betty resolves to continue to eat only Melba toasts for breakfast so she'll look good on Henry's arm at the RNC when Nelson Rockefeller accepts the nomination!

Peggy resolves to date younger men who already have jobs.

Pete resolves to stay married to Trudy but get Peggy back into bed.

Trudy resolves to force Pete to adopt a baby now that he has her Dad's clerasil account.

Roger resolves to stay married to Jane to save what's left of his golden porkchop, but he is still in love with Joan.

Bert resolves to do much of the same albeit in a less swanky office.
.
Now that she has heard about Betty and Don divorcing, Francine resolves to get into the city more often. Don may need a home cooked meal!

Joan resolves to become Media Liason for SCDP and to murder Greg if she can make it look like an accident. She bought him life insurance for Christmas!

Don resolves to actually date before jumping right into bed. After the New Year's party, of course.

UK Air Date for Season 3 of Mad Men

Mad Men season 3 starts on BBC 4 on the 27th January 2010

More work please!

I hope we see more ad campaigns next season. I missed that this time. The personal stories are compelling but, I am fascinated by the actual copywriting and artwork. I want more wheeling and dealing at the three martini lunch and less Betty skanking around behind Don's back.

Sherlock Holmes vs Up in the Air

Okay maddicts - trying to decide which movie to see this weekend - would anyone like to give their two cents??? I know I can count on my fellow mad men fans to direct me to the right movie :-)

music from Season 2: e1

does anyone know what the music is that played at the end of Season 2: episode 1? (For Those Who Think Young). I wish they'd list the ending music for each episode on the web site. Each one is so compelling and seems to be related to the story line. My local library is my hero for stocking all the Mad Men episodes! It's great to watch with FF, REW and PAUSE.

Mother Day Episode newspaper

I'm a late Mad Men addict. Watched Season 1 and 2 recenly. I think it was Season 1, the Mother's Day Episode, when Don was making breakfast for Betty. He picked up the newspaper and browsed it. I had to play the DVD slow to notice it was a copy of 'The Poughkeepsie Journal'. I found it odd that it would be that newspaper since the PJ originates from Dutchess County and they were living in Westchester County. I would think in the 60s Westcheter had their own newspaper. I know the writers, directors, etc really want accuracy on their show...just wondering why they used that newspaper? Anybody know? Love Love the show!

mad man marathon

here in canada AMC had a MM Marathon on Saturday and Sunday and again next weekend

Season 1 - Mitch

First, I reccomend watching season 1 now that we know all we know at the end of 3. It's pretty interesting.

In doing so, I got up to episode 11, Indian Summer, where Roger had his second heart attack in the middle of the meeting. Afterward the gang is crowded in Pete's office as usual worried about their jobs. They're talking about the possibilities regarding personnel shifts. In case you're like me and always wondered about "Mitch" here's another one:

Pete says, what about Mitch Sullivan in Media?
Harry has a nasty reply of, he's fat, bald and charmless.

So we have a Mitch, in media, who, Harry doesn't like so it obviously is the infamous Mitch. While the never-seen Mitch is hardly on the Maris of Frasier level, he's mentioned as far back as season 1 so maybe he has a purpose. Or maybe, probably more likely, he was written into the original outlines but they never had a place for him, kinda like Dale. Anyway it was interesting nonetheless to have another mention of Mitch yet again, and wonder if they'll ever do anything with him.

I wouldn't mind if they had developed him into this never seen character, the same way you never actually see the shark in Jaws until the end, who's only place is to apparently torment poor neurotic Harry.

john slattery

is john slattery related to an actor named page slattery ? i saw his name in the credits of cape fear, 1961.

What framed advertisement hangs in Don Draper's office?

I see a framed advertisement in this image of Don Draper's office:

http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/uimages/dc/Mad%20Men%20EW.jpg

Can someone please tell me what the ad is for, if it's a real vintage layout, and if one can find a straight-on image of it online?

Thank you,
Michael

1964 civil rights act

Do you think the story line could be affected by this? It could bring Sal back.

Don Draper's green battery operated pencil sharpener

Hi has anyone got clue to the manufacturer of Don Draper's green battery operated pencil sharpener. I have been searching but it is very elusive I can't find anything about it. I have always liked clear green items it must be a childhood thing. If anyone has one and wants to sell it let me know. It would make my Christmas.

Scuzz

Music at end of E13

I have been familiar with all of the music featured at the end of each episode, but I must admit, I have never heard the tune played at season three's end. Can someone tell me the artist and the name of the song? It has haunting lyrics.

British Tea Cup Pattern

Does anyone know the name of the tea cup pattern the British guy is using on the show?

How can I get a Mad Men mug?

Hi anybody/everybody,

My sister-in-law wants one of the black "Mad Men" mugs for Christmas (http://blogs.amctv.com/mad-men/2009/09/talk-what-will-joan-do.php) and I'm wondering if they are for sale somewhere on the site or elsewhere?

Can anyone help? Thanks!

CHILDHOOD CHRISTMAS/HOLIDAY MEMORIES/STORIES

Drink&Smoke had a fine idea over on the thread about the opening title sequence of Mad Men (Vasco's, I believe?) and promised he'd post his aluminum Christmas tree memory if I'd post the thread....done!

I'm still trying to think of my best one....but it will come to me.....uh, I think......

In case you were worried. . . .

January Jones will be back!

Great interview from E! Online (already posted in the blog)

Mad Men New Year's Resolutions for 1964

The cast of Mad Men are busy making their New Year's Resolutions for 1964. Here are a few:

Don will resolve to buy a new suit that isn't gray or black.
Betty will resolve to be a better parent and stop leaving the kids with Carla - days on end.
Sally will resolve to take anger management classes.
Bobby will resolve to take self-esteem classes.
Roger will resolve to start wearing his golden pork chop more often.
Bert will resolve to spend more time with his cows in Montana.
Layne will resolve to have some fun and celebrate New Years Eve by getting three sheets to the wind and putting on the armored suit.
Joan will resolve to put a stop to anymore names being added to the ad agency's title.
Trudy will resolve to start changing the sheets at home more often and stop buying so much German sausage.
Pete will resolve to finally get that cowboy hat to go with his saddle bags and rifle.
Peggy will resolve to dump Duck and start a search party to find Chauncey.
Harry will resolve this guilt and finally admit there was never a "Mitch" working at SC.

What other resolutions do you have for them?

Twelve Days of Christmas for Mad Men

On the first day of Christmas, the Ad Gods gave to me:
A new advertising agency

Two secretaries

Three fountain pens

Four ringing phones

Five new accounts

Six martini lunches

Seven Lucky Strikes

Eight bags of Utz

Nine nights at Hiltons

Ten flights to Reno

Eleven shirts from Menken's

Twelve hot new girlfriends

and a new advertising agency!

Opening title sequence - Which ads are used?

I'd like to know which ads are used in the title sequence. Especially the girl on the far right when the sequence displays rich summers, has my interest. The person who finds out which ad that is, is a hero! :)

Intro Music to Season 3 Episodes

Does anyone know what the episode recap music is to all Season 3 episodes? - It is the music playing during the "Previously on Mad Men" episode recap which goes for precisely 30 seconds, just before RJD2's A Beautiful Mine kicks in. It is a simple piano melody accompanied by a slow bass.

so how do you think the Draper - Francis family spent Christmas?

Let's Twist Again !

What advice would Don give Tiger Woods?

Suspend your disbelief for a moment, and imagine Tiger calls Don Draper for advice to deal with his little PR problem? What sage advice would Don offer?

As the world turns is cancelled

They just announced another CBS soap has been canceled.

JUST WHEN IT WAS GETTING GOOD AGAIN!!!!!

Next September is when it will be gone...............

A lot of people were watching As the world turns when the Breaking News came on to say that President Kennedy had been shot in Dallas.

So we're negotiating.

Will the sheer volume of effort, work, and dedication required to make the new Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce agency a success be able to fill the emptiness inside Don Draper and finally make him whole?
Re-watching the finale for the upteenth time I realized that I had never seen Don act like a man with a real purpose so much as in this episode. I loved the scene in which he asks Lane to fire them and then goes on to say, "So we're negotiating." The look on his face says it all. He is not just going to be a follower, an employee; this is going be something of his own if they can pull it off. His marriage to Betty is over. MW has said as much in numerous interviews, but if he can finally fill the void that makes him so numb, maybe the next one can be successful.

If I Die Before Season 4

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my sould to keep.
For if I die before I wake,
I pray Season 4 of Mad Men is waiting
at The Pearly Gates!
Amen

What is Don gonna do when he finds out?

For those of you who are still around.
What happens when Don finds out that Peggy has been sleeping with Duck? Even if she ends it with Duck it still feels like betrayal on her part especially now that she knows that Don does have some respect for her.I hope he never finds out.

Am I signed in?

I'm confused...this site says: Hello rozsie and it looks like I am signed in, but when I try to post it tells me I'm not ... go figure!

I want to respond to NYCguy's post about 13 episodes.

I think it has to do with the fact that there are 52 weeks in the year - divided by 13 would result in the four calendar quarters - convenient for accountants and financial wizards. Maybe that's too logical an explanation, but it works for me.

NYC guy, I recall when some TV shows were only 15 minutes long: soap operas and fill-ins. One in particular was the Liberace show which ran one summer but became so popular it was extended to a full length program...and the rest is history.

There's an old show-biz adage: Always leave them wanting more. And true MM maddicts always want more.
( I hope this posts because I don't want to have to type it out again!)

Another great obscure Mad Men moment

Fellow Maddicts!

When the season ended I swore I was gonna let it go and come back maybe when they started re-running the episodes. But, probably like all of you, when there is nothing on you end up tossing your recording back in and watch episodes randomly. Yes, me too. My name is Greg and I am a Maddict.

I want you all, whoever is left, to check this out because you'll love it. Myself, I'm kicking myself because I didn't catch this at the time and this is the kind of thing that is right up my alley regarding what I love about this little art project called Mad Men.

Ok. Episode 10. (when Betty opens Don's drawer finally):

I guess we were all caught up in the awe of the moment to catch anything else but I'll tell you what I just saw now. Betty goes through the box, and she gets to the divorce paper. That's what shocks her, not the deed to a house.

She then sits down.... in a complete wash of bright light. As in "do you see the light" or "the light finally goes on" or however you want to term it. Betty in Don's chair, finding out, in substance, who Don is, and the light going on. And she is awash in bright light cast upon her. Brilliant, gorgeous symbollic photography.

What else is interesting is that as the model literally and metaphorically Betty is, she is for the first time, photographed in harsh, horrible light. They never do that with January Jones/Betty. But they did here. Betty for the first and probably only time looks like a real person, not a princess. You see every line in her face, you see the reality of being a person who is now forced into reality. They hold her in that light long enough to see it. I don't think it's incidental.

I think it's gorgeous, strong photography and part of the art that makes Mad Men, Mad Men. Just when you think we all nailed everything, you end up watching it again and catch something else. I think the scene is just so terrific through the photography, and the seeing the light symbolism. Have at it Maddicts...

Does anyone know WHO won the Mad Men Contest - does anyone CARE?

I think AMCtv.com could basically write a book on how to make a contest totally anticlimatic and irrelevant at this point.

I am so frustrated with there being no news on this at all (unless I missed it somehow).

The rules said 'winner posted on Nov. 12th' then it changed to "end of Nov." and now I can't even find the webpage.

So, does anyone KNOW or even care anymore WHAT happened?

Thanks!

Second Time Around

What are you noticing the second time around? and I know you are all watching again!
Myself I got a big laugh when I noticed the basket with the snake in Pryce's office several episodes after "a guy walks into an ad agency". I have more but I have to go to work now.
a little something for laughs.

New Mad Men Addict

I've recently begin to watch Mad Men, starting with Season 1 Episode 1 and I've been sucked in completely. I find myself constantly analyzing how people in the 60's would react to our ways of doing business and living. I seem to be more of a fan of that period but only on a styling basis. This shoe is provocative and makes you think and analyze how things change over time. On that note i really want to know what kind of watch Don Draper wears. I am a big watch fan and i must have this watch. Help Please!

Mad Men season 3 to air in

Mad Men starts in January on BBC4

Hope some of the cast come over to plug the show

JHamm's Body Hair...

Yes, before you say it, I KNOW I'm a fanatic Maddict. So there. Now, about that hair - JH obviously is a dreamboat, but that beard is too much! If I were his stylist, I would counsel some lasering to get rid of a few layers of it, just to bring it down to a manageable amount. Remember the scene in which he is in bed with Miss Farrell and her brother drops in unexpectedly? JH stands up, showing us a lot of chest hair, then turns around, exhibiting a perfectly clean back- That had to be a shave or (ouch!) wax job.
Um-m-m, new career move for me, waxing JH.....I'd
do it for free, wouldn't you?

I Found an Error

As they were reading off the list of f Aerospace Companies gathering in Los Angeles, Martin -Marietta was named. I worked for Martin Company diring this period, they did not merge with Marietta until much latter. Just an FYI, otherwise the script has been dead on for the period, Congratulations

Music

I have been searching for hours trying to find the Piano Tune that accompanies the "Story Matters Here" Commercial. If anyone can help please DO!

Thanks in advance
