Hollywood, with a Natalie Wood look-alike, a Marilyn Monroe look-alike, a Grace Kelly look-alike...
Polaroid introduced The Swinger about that time if my memory serves correctly. Also Wink by Canada Dry billed as "The Sassy One." Ford's Mustang in the Winter of 1964 knowns as a 641/2 model.
Metrecal Diet Drink....I remember using that as a young teen (13 or 14) and it worked....although it gave one a severe headache....stopped using it then. Did it have cyclamates or something that could have caused that side effect?
It may have been introduced later than 1964, however, not sure....I was 13 in 1964, so it could have been then....anyone know the year it was launched?
Maybe Peggy or ? could use it to "reduce" and end up becoming too thin and get kidded for THAT this time around (rather than being "fat")
....answering my own question, here, I guess...just went to Googlebooks and it said in a 1960 Life mag ad that Metrecal had been introduced "a little over a year ago"....so guess it had been around awhile when I tried it in '64 or '65....
SC, I remember the Metrecal ads, too.
There were a lot of great Pepsi ads in the early and mid 60's as well. Dream Whip was big as a whipped cream substitute before Cool-Whip came out. What about the Imperial Margarine ads where people suddenly got crowns? This was truly the golden age of advertising. Slinky and Wheel-o the thing Don fell down the steps on in Season 1 on Mother's Day.
Do they already have Mattel?
That would be a good 'un, too.
Maybe the Barbie Dream House or her sports car to do ads for....don't recall when exactly they were introduced but I wanted a dream house so bad....never got one, but did have the sports car, the 45's record set, "Barbie Sings!" (I can still remember most of the lyrics with Ken serenading Barbie!) and most of their clothes, along with the fold-out (heavy cardboard) townhouse ~ or whatever that one was called. Wish I still had all that stuff....played with it all until it was really "used" looking and then years and years later, my niece played with it all until it was all played out!
Hell, we didn't know "back then" to buy two and keep one of everything NIB to sell 50 years later on Ebay for thousands, did we?
We got stuff & we played with it....who knew??? lol
I'm wondering if there are any advertising historians who can recall of a campaign or product that was launched back then that was a disaster like the Edsel in the late 50's. (My Dad bought one and it was his favorite car)
I'm wondering if agencies specialized in children's toys etc or if each agency catered to a wide variety of clients.
Barbie debued in 1959, I believe, and I think Sally had a Barbie house in her room; I don't know if it was a Dream House. Just like you describe, the first Barbie houses were cardboard and you had to punch all the furniture out, then fold, insert tabs, etc. to assemble it. It was gorgeous, though, my friend up the street had one, and I would beg to go to her house to play Barbies. I wanted one sooo bad!
I had one of the first of the bubble cut/bendable leg Barbies in 1963 0r 64 and a Midge with a tight flip hair-do and straight legs. That was before twist and turn waist.
What fun we had! Kids today are all caught up in texting and video games-no room for real imagination.
I kept all my daughter's Barbies because she never really liked them; I think I just bought them for myself, I guess! Then my sister had a girl so she got them all. Needless to say, they are no longer desirable for a collector!
I'm sure a bigger firm already has Mattel and Pepsi, but maybe they could have a scenario where the companies want a fresh, new perspective fron a young firm. With the exception of Sterling and Cooper, SCDP is a young firm.
Also, what margarine was it where it was not nice to fool Mother Nature? That would be a good campaign for Peggy. There's always Adorn hairspray, Breck shampoo, Prell, Maybelline, and with PPL out of the picture, perhaps the World's Fair or another stab at Madison Square Garden.
Interesting, though, I was rewatching The New Girl from S2 this morning, and Bobbie said something about Marilyn Monroe appearing at the "Garden" to sing at a fundraiser for JFK's birthday. Is this a faux pas or was there another Garden? Does anyone know?
Parkay was the spread that wasn't nice to fool Mother Nature.
May 19, 1962, months before she died of an overdose in August, Marilyn Monroe sang for JFK at the old Madison Square Gardens. (Isn't Google wonderful?)
Sorry, Ritt, but, I believe it was Chiffon not Parkay, do they even still make Chiffon, I wonder?
Here's a clip (bad picture quality)

And yes, Google is wonderful, a miracle for sure, as is the entire internet, IMO.
And don't feel bad, I once posted that Roger was the "love child" of Alice and Bert! (I caught it about ten minutes later, and posted a "retraction"....duh!) Not that he technically couldn't be....I just don't think those two could ever be that kinky!
Barbie anything would be intriguing what with Betty looking like a Barbie doll, Sally the perfect age to play with Barbie dolls, and the Drapers' dream house falling apart.
SCfan -
You're absolutely right. It was Chiffon. No longer in production, judging by the lack of current advertising responses in Google.
I never thought Roger was the love child of Alice and Bert. Although he could have been of Roger's mother and Bert while his dad was out on a bender and she was trying to get her own back. Which is why Bert promised her to watch over Roger.
Broadway! In particular a little show called "How to Succeed in Business (Without Really Trying)" starring some guy named Robert Morse.
What a hoot!
Who could they cast as a young Morse?!?!?
Imagine a scene between Morse and ... Morse!?
Yes, Ritt, that's entirely possible about Roger's parentage....I just wonder if they'll ever tell us who his mother actually was....and it would be intriguing if Bert was indeed his father....I wouldn't be a bit surprised....what with all the slack he cuts the guy....gotta be some reason for that.
I still think it could be possible that Alice is his mom....just maybe she had a fling way back there with ______ Sterling, Sr.? (Have they ever mentioned Roger's dad's first name?)
I just bet one or the other (Alice or Bert) is one of Roger's (biological) parents....with some long ago "flames" or Bert's departed wife.... I guess that might make Alice "bi" since we've heard about her female "companion" before....plus Bert could have had a fling with the senior Sterling's wife.....am I making any sense?
Ah such juiciness....a bit soapy, but it all might still be fun if they throw some of that in.....they've never really told us all that much about Roger yet, or Bert or Alice even....or (Roger -- ?) Sterling, Sr. for that matter....
Oh, sorry, Ritt....you already mentioned that up there about Bert and Roger's dad's wife.....ooops!
It is an intriguing possiblity for sure.
Maybe they will delve into Roger's and Bert's pasts next season, I hope so.
Chevy or Ford we need to see some of those great old cars besides cadillacs and lincolns
How about Clairol... wasn't 1964 or 65 when they came up with the Does she or doesn't she? campaing?
Okay, my pick would have to be CBS (yeah I know blasphemy but hear me out). What about Ed Sullivan or something to do with the Beatles arrival (its of the time, they were British, and Sterling, Cooper, Pryce is in NYC). This is definetly an event that will be addressed in Season 4 no doubt. For those who think young indeed!
