Peggy Is In Love With Don
I was reading a previous post about why Don fought for Peggy and not for Betty. I kept wondering why Peggy stayed at SC even after several offers from other companies. I then thought about Don and Peggy's first meeting when Peggy came on to Don and Don quickly told her that he was her boss and not her boyfriend. In almost every scene with Don, Peggy wears this look like a love sick teenager. The people in the office even thought they were having an affair. They share a very strange, yet close sort of intimacy and friendship of shared secrets and mutual respect. Peggy stayed with SC because she is mad about Don even from day one. That's why she seems bored with other men that she meets because none of them measure up to Don. I hope they don't have an affair in Season 4. I really want Don with Rachel. Don may even have some unrecognized feelings for Peggy other than respect. He says that he sees himself in Peggy and remember Don loves himself more than anything.

Sorry manhattangirl36, I don't see it. I think fighting for Peggy vs Betty is apples and oranges.
Peggy, fresh out of Miss Seaver's Secreterial School, made a play for Don on her first day at work because she believed that 's what Joan told her to do. She respects Don for the great work he does and knows that he gave her her big chance. Of the copywriters Peggy was the best one for the new business. Who else, Paul? I don't think so. Both Don and Peggy have a bond that is not romantic. Don is her mentor and she admires him and appreciates how he does business, but is not in love with him, There are plenty of female/male mentorships that have nothing to do with romantic love.
Don doesn't know how to save a marriage or even be in one. He knows only what advertising tells him what a marriage is. During the 60's & early 70's a lot of people believed what the media touted. The word "dysfunction family" wasn't heard of. Everyone should be "Leave It To Beaver", "Donna Reed" or the "Partridge Family"
Between Betty thinking outside the box and McCann Erickson takeover Don can only handle one thing at a time and jumping into work (and alcohol) is his escape.
Ironic isn't it that McCann Erickson was Betty's first "outside the box" experience.
Also, see the Post of 11/22 @ 7:33pm from stacypeoria for other comments on this topic.
And every couple should be like Ozzie and Hariette.
I will bet you Don becomes a full time alcoholic.
Don and Piggy - I can imagine what they did
on the desk, after hours?
Pete and Piggy were on the couch, I think that was his baby - lil Piggy had, or was it Don Draper's?
hmmmmmm
Sexy-tary
There is nothing romantic between Don and Peggy. They have a connection because to me, she is his female counterpart. They understand each other. I have never seen anything that looked like a lovesick expression on her face.
I never understood this concept of Peggy being Don's "counterpart." To me, they're night and day. Peggy is shy, demure, well educated, and well mannered. Don is brusque, forceful, and a natural leader.
What am I missing?
That Don said, "I've always seen you as an extension of myself," or whatever it was he said, was just bullspit.
Oh yes MadMenSuze Don's alcoholism will show it nasty head. Possible future story line?
As to Don and Peggy being alike, let's think about it.
1) They are both extremely intuitive.
2) They both have lightning quick minds.
3) They both have had unique experiences, some of which they know about the other.
4) They both have had to try harder than anyone else to compensate for educational deficiencies, as neither of them was born with a silver spoon in their mouth.
5) They are both dead set on getting ahead.
The above ttaits bond them and will hold them in good stead throughout their careers. Their personal characteristics or approaches might differ greatly, but they are really two of a kind when it comes to their careers. Just sayin',,,,
Sand girl,
These things can be said about half the people on this show.
They have more in opposition to each other than commonalities: Peggy is honest. Don is one unending lie. Peggy's experiences are vastly different from Don's. (Did Don give up a child?)
Peggy wishes desperately to please. Don wants people to please HIM. Etc, etc...
Don's pretty sharp. His speech to her at her apartment was nothing more than reminding her that she had a big bad secret that he knows about, and he's the ONLY ONE who recognizes that she can use her sadness/trauma/loss to come up with money-making copy for the products they pitch. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think he's sincere in wanting what's best for HER; it's all about him and the success of his new agency SCDP. As Betty once said: He can make anybody believe anything.
MW has shown us the reckless chances Don has taken for a reason. Smoking pot with Midge and her friends, drunk driving with Bobbie, getting involved with TheJetSetters, picking up the hitchhikers and taking the pills, getting himself beat up and left for broke. MW is setting us up to understand Don already when we see taking 'shrooms and dropping acid (LSD) in Season 5.
I too was wondering if Don's tears for Peggy were just crocodile tears in a calculated attempt to make sure he won her for the new agency because he needs her. I suppose that would be part of it (the selfish motivation) but I am sure that the fact that he was raw emotionally from Betty's unforeseen departure made it all the easier for him to "act" for her.
think you have to remember that Peggy is only a 23 year old young woman. She is moving up the ladder very rapidly and sees Don as her hero of sorts for helping her get her start. She is still naive and insecure in many ways that many young women are. I can see her having romantic feelings for Don. She never left SC even after Don kicked her around. Even after she had several other offers. She stayed. Why? Even with Doug prodding her to leave Don behind. She still stayed. That's a very intense loyalty that she's showing Don or maybe something deeper.
Peggy is not in love with Don. Nor Don with her. She is looking for a special someone but could easily drift into the world of promiscuity as practiced by her male counterparts. She will have difficulty finding a permanent partner because she won't settle for being the submissive wife/girlfriend especially now that she has had a taste of what it's like being on top (pun intended). Nor will she want a male partner who is less than her equal. Hers is the difficult flip side of the coin of feminism. Once she has achieved a certain equality with her male peers, her chances of finding an equal life partner are diminished. Men will likely either be repulsed, feel threatened, see her as a "challenge," or be intimidated. I see a future for Peggy that is similar to Don's, but without the spouse/partner and kids. She will most likely (based on the character as portrayed thus far) have a long career and be successful (financially) and remain pretty much alone. I can see her and Don getting together for drinks as the years progress and commiserating but that's about it.
Peggy is not in love with Don. She has an affinity for him, and loyalty to him, because of how he treated her pregnancy and absence from work. There was a flashback scene in Season 2, I believe, where Peggy was in the hospital after her delivery. She woke up and Don was sitting there in a chair in the room. He basically told her to forget about what had happened and go back to work. (Unless I'm mistaken and this was supposed to be a dream sequence.) Anyway, the point is that 1) He respected her enough to find out what the issue was, come see her at the hospital, and yet not say anything to Sterling Cooper and 2) He obviously values her as an employee. Who wouldn't be loyal to their devilishly handsome boss after all that?
It's pretty simple.
It's professional. She's always wanted to be viewed more as an equal copy writer since she landed the first account as a 'ghost'.
Now that she's moved up and is a full copywriter and has produced more good for SC, she wants to obtain more power. Hence the asking and receiving for her own office, and what not.
In turn she views Don as someone she wants to become. Powerful. Smart. Respected and Feared.
It's 'Dong' Envy.
There is some deep symbolism going on here.
Have you ever noticed how nonjudgmental Don is about social contexts which were (at that time) quite scathing?
Perhaps... Don represents the free thinking world (although his current public life is all conformity...it's why he's so miserable). Peggy represents feminism. They will thrive together, but they both have a hard time fitting into the "norm."
I am still trying to figure out their dynamic, but I believe these concepts to be key. I used to think they were headed down the path of romance, but I don't know that I believe that now.
I did, however, predict Don would start a spin-off firm and take Peggy with him. I take credit for calling that in Season 1! Ha!
My other early prediction is that one day - Peggy will be the boss of all of them.
Peggy views the ad world through Don colored glasses. Such as after Marilyn died where she frankly says it was good the Marilyn/Jackie ad campaign didn't fly as they'd have to pull it, when all the other women in the office were crying over it. He noticeably appreciates her professional assessments.
Peggy sees his easy power and status as a placeholder for where she wants to be, but she also sees Don as a real person much like the first Mrs. Draper.
Peggy's character is twinned to Don's: a certain innocence about some things, a creative adaptability and advertising skill, a penchant for frank appraisal and direct statements, a focus on success, and a subtle yet all-encompassing and a somewhat endearing need to be needed and wanted.
Don confessed he had seen Peggy as an extension of himself. Peggy is more like a bright mirror to his dark and troubled one, and he feels good about himself in the light of this positive reflection.
This relationship seems poised to mature - though not romantically - as both characters grow during the challenge of whatever the next season holds
Peggy: Season 1, makes a pass at Don in the confusion of the agency staff always referring to her physically rather than professionally. Upon being rebuffed, is told what is expected of her. Looks up to Don and respects his position and ability. She appreciates that he gives her a chance and, unlike the other men there, never considered her a conquest. (Season 1, she is upset that they are all seeing her as a conquest and not just being civil.)
Don: As on season 1, is guarding against Pete Campbelll’s ambition. Also not part of the male staff’s culture because he neither approves of how they treat Peggy, nor does he attend the bachelor party for Pete. Peggy is similarly outside their world. While Pete can’t be trusted because of his ambition, Peggy can be trusted because she is ambitious and loyal to Don. In season 3, he relates to Peggy so much that he considers her an extension of himself.
There is no romantic or sexual connection – just a workplace friendship.
is there any way to just purchase the calendar
is there a way to purchase the calendar
I think Peggy is not in love with Don, and this will not happen in the feature because she is not a woman full of sexual attraction that Don wants. When Don’s past is revealed, betty leaves him, he can’t do anything to save family, devoting himself to construck SCDP, which is Don’s faith that look forward and forget past, is the only thing he can do. Without having affairs, Don is forced to face himself in a mess and Peggy is the placid factor, the only one person that he can trust. Eliminating the distinction of sex and age, both Don and Peggy hide secrets behind themselves and struggle for higher status. They virtually experience similar life.
Don and Peggy are both living a life far different than who they were raised to be. That is the connection they share. Peggy sees Don as her mentor but, ultimately he is where she wants to be. Her affair with Duck may even be partly because that is how Don conducts himself. She is emulating her mentor warts and all.
