Yep, DD was doing fine until he uttered those, wasn't he? (heartfelt, loving and enveloping hug) but, he haaaad to ruin it, didn't he?

If only he had just kept on hugging Betts a bit longer ~~ and then sat down with her at the table and held her hand while she finished crying, or just to show her (crying or not) that he felt for her and all he'd put her through (I believe the tears were mostly for the shock/hurt she'd dealt with from The Drawer/Confrontation just prior, rather than the assassination alone, plus expecting her to shield the kids, too.

Yes, The Drapers are dulling all their emotions with pills.....big mistake.

The Drawer/Confrontation happened on October 30th. It's now November 22nd. Three weeks for the shock to impact her to tears? I don't think so. Unless it's something like PTSD. It think it's more like the way Marilyn's suicide impacted Joan.

Would hugging her longer have helped? Who knows? Might have. Might not have. But Don was behaving like a lot of guys during that time frame and even now - strong and stoic. If you can fix the situation, do it. If not, move on. He couldn't fix the situation of JFK getting killed and didn't understand why Betty couldn't take it more like a man. So he told her to do something that he thought might fix her situation.

M wife rarely wants my advice on how to fix situations at her work and gets mad when I give it anyway. She just wants to vent. Betty wanted to vent.
