January Jones on SNL Tonight
OK Madaddicts...Mrs. Betty Draper hosts SNL tonight...be there or be square!!!!

i am new to the forum and just want to say i cannot wait to see january jones tonight on snl
I missed the monologue but caught most of the Grace Kelly skit--Was she cracking up in most of it?
I thought she was terrible! Taylor Swift last week, who is not an actor, was far superior in the skits
Well, I really don't enjoy saying this, but I thought she was terrible too. I wanted her to be good on it, but man, she was a mess. Maybe she was really nervous or something.
I thought the writing for the show was terrible. Catered to 12-year olds with potty humor. What's the poor girl to do with that?
SNL has really gone down hill. It wasn't January Jones who was bad, it was the writing on the show. Not one skit was funny. That's the fault of the show, not JJ. JJ is a good actress, as proven especially in this past season of MM.
Wasthere: I agree with you. I was embarrassed for poor January. Bathroom humor is puerile and a cheap way of getting laughs. They didn't even do a real MM take-off, and none of the others showed up, which surprised me. But then, I thought last year's Jon Hamm appearance sucked too.
I will miss Betty if she doesn't come back next year. I'm one of the few who actually sympathize with her character and I see enormous potential in her. What do you think the writers have in store for our poor girl? Will Henry turn out to be a stand-up guy or a jerk?

Gail: I think Matt will bring back Betty and Henry just as he did Joan after she left SC. The MM fans will want to know what happens next. And the fact that Betty and Don share the children should definitely play into it.

Hi wasthere and Gail.
I was really dissapointed with JJ's appearence on SNL. She never stood a chance with the terrible writing and stupid skits they had her in.
I think she is a good actress, but wasn't able to show it with the juvenile writing on SNL. I didn't like Jon Hamm's appearence last year either for the same reason: poor writing.SNL hasn't been good for years.
As for the Betty character,I am sure she'll be back next year.I can't see her going through with the marriage to Henry. He might have some deep dark secret that will cause her to have second thoughts.
I guess we will have plenty of time to speculate till Season 4 debuts.
Yes, definitely a disappointment. These days, the only part of the show that is half-way decent is the NewsUpdate. But the rest of the show seems to be written for 8th grade boys! However, The Ladies Guide to Throwing A Party was kind of entertaining. And, the clothes in this piece were rented from my friend's costume company!
I have to agree....the picnic/clouds sketch was as if they were just making it up as they went along....so stupid.
I do think it was the writing and not January....I agree she's is a fine actress ~~ when she has something to work with! (re: the white bathrobe/no makeup/"You never say you love me." scene with Don on the couch last season, for one example)
Wish they would have done a Mad Men take off and maybe Jon Hamm or Roger or someone would have shown up. I think Elisabeth Moss was doing Speed the Plow on Broadway right when JH appeared on SNL last year, so it was (relatively) convenient, I guess, for her to lend her support in the "Two A-Holes..." sketch. It was nice of John S. to show up, too, don't know what his situation was, but I was glad to see him. They blew a chance to give "Roger" some zingers in that same sketch, and wasted "Peggy, too but, again the writing is mostly crappy these days.
I was surprised the "Don Draper's Guide to Picking Up Women" was as great as it was. Do you think he ad-libbed that one? lol
Oh well, she got some "exposure" anyway, cruddy as it was.
Guess the days of "Fred Garvin, Male Prostitute" are long gone. Too bad.
The sad truth is that after three seasons as the self-absorbed, humorless, self-righteous, squeaky-assed Main Line narcissist Betty, Jones has convinced herself she's too high and mighty to perform material targeted to Joe Six-Pack and the "Great Unwashed Masses." Hey Betts, your gas smells just like ours.
The Ladies Guide to Throwing A Party was good, but nothing compared to The Don Draper's Guide to Picking up Women. Yes, you're right SCfan - the days of Fred Garvin, Killer Bees and the Wild and Crazy Guys are gone. Cheers.
Hey Drink, don't forget the land shark! I also loved John Belushi's take offs on Beethoven, Joe Cocker and of course, he and Dan. A.'s "Blues Brothers." I even still laugh at that movie. Oh, and The Coneheads.....'from France'. Todd and Lisa and Mrs. Lubener (sp?) were fantastic, as well. Tang and egg salad sandwiches for everyone.....yum ~~ ???
The original Not Ready for Primetime Players were great....coked up all the time, but great nonetheless.
I feel our Ms Jones was nervous and had no say on what or how the skits would go. I was disappointed that they did not do any MM skits except for the opening bit. As for the question about Henry, I think he will be a good change of pace for Betty at least he treats her like a women and he seems to adore her even if they have not shown them together a lot. I am excited to see what they do with that relationship I feel Betty needs a good man in her life especially after the whole fiasco with Don and the loss of her mom and dad in such a short period of time.
Egads...a once proud show gone pretty far down. Terrible writing for almost the whole shebang... and imho, January was definitely not in her comfort zone on live TV... she was nervous, wooden, and fluffed lines (even though they have a teleprompt, FFS) - the problem was not all in the writing.
(Though I did like Fred's "I like Peggy" line)
Despite the fact that it is easy for an armchair critic like me to say it was a bad SNL performance, when it is not me who is on stage taking the risk. It still seems like a serious blown opportunity to show the world that your more than just a pretty Grace Kelly look alike. If I was in her possition I would have told Loren Michaels or who ever, If I can't put 300% worth of work from me and the writers it would be better if I did not do it and hope the opportunity would come another day.
I was sick yesterday with a terrible migraine and watched the taped show and thought she was terrible but thought I felt that way because I was so ill
the jimmy stewart sketch was rediculous and but I think anybody of any age would find it badly done
his jimmy stewart impression was outstanding tho
I think admirers of Princess Grace would be insulted and it wouldn't surprise me if there was some kind of backlash
Yes, you are right Melba....January was not in her comfort zone. The best skit was the Woman's Guide to Throwing a Party. That was a skit made for Betty Draper and January's comfort zone is playing Betty. Why didn't SNL give her at least one other good Betty skit? Jon got two good skits with Don Draper when he hosted SNL. Poor Betts.
I still say she is a good actress....I've said before, and it's true....you can only do so much without good writing.
Maybe we should look at it that she's a trooper, going on in spite of all that crappy material (all except for the Guide to Throwing a Party...that was borderline funny, like you said, Drink -- loved the last two items on her list! ha)
I say, cheers to January for giving it the old college try...SNL has needed new writers for ages....
Cadmen: I agree with you. It's a disgrace to Princess Grace's memory. If I were her children, I'd be pissed off.
Drink&Smoke: Good to see you again!
Madmenfan4ever: Good to see you again!
SCfan: I still love JJ and I think she's superb as Betty Draper (I've said this many times before). So now we'll have to listen to January Jones bashing in lieu of Betty-bashing. Don't hate her because she's beautiful!
Finally saw the SNL skits in question. Must say the writers really missed an opportunity with JJ playing Grace Kelly and the guy who played Jimmy Stewart (sorry I don't know his name as he did a wonderful impression, in my opinion). She had on a gown very similar to the one worn by Grace Kelly in Rear Window...I had to look twice at it to be sure it wasn't identical. I just saw Rear Window the other night for about the 57th time. Favorite old movie of mine, and I would have loved seeing a really good spoof of it. The writers had everything they needed right there and they really blew it.
If I had been January Jones, I would have refused to do that skit. Don't guests have the right of refusal to perform something when the material if so bad? Saying thanks but no thanks, and walking away could not have hurt her worse than actually going along with that juvenile dreck.
Nice to see your posts on the blog too, Gail. You are right about JJ being superb as the "humorous" Betty Draper. It's a shame SNL didn't play on her Betty character a little more. Your line..."don't hate her because she is beautiful"...good one.
You know, that really is true, what you all have said about Princess Grace's memory/family...after I think about it, I think rather than January "being a trooper" (as I posted on another thread) she might have done well to do what z says....just tell them no.
Surely live shows have to have back ups, stand ins or whatever they're called (emergency folk) in case the guest star gets sick, etc....?
Oh well, maybe she herself thought it was funny....I saw her almost break up a time or two....I hate to think so, but that may have been the case. I dunno.
