Armchair Astrologers: Your suggested Sun Signs per each major character?
I know there are some astrologers or students of astrology out there in cyber-land. Do you have hunches as to the Sun-Signs of each of the main MAD MEN characters? It's just for fun..... but how close can you come?
Don: Definitely a Scorpio/Plutonic type. Sex, secrets, handsomeness, serious passion, a blunt discursive habit. All point to Scorpio for me.
Betty: I'm thinking a Libra type. Natural beauty, poise and a certain indolence suggest Libra to me.
Joan: Virgo.
Roger: Leo
Bert: Aquarius.
Sally: Taurus
Sal: Gemini.
Peggy; Cancer
Pete: Capricorn
Kinsey: Virgo
Ken: Aries
Lane Pryce: Capricorn.
Connie: Scorpio.
St. John: Sagittarius
Trudy: Pisces
Greg: Leo
Carla: Capricorn
Bobby: Pisces
Duck: Leo
Henry: Gemini
Kurt: Aquarius
Miss Farrell: Aries

What say you? Am I onto something? Way off the mark?

Hi there Ras.... love this! Agree with most... (Well done!) Its late for me, but tomorrow I shall come up with some rising signs..... (me=Gem-Aq mostly air chart, Uranian.)
Hi Ras: Good subject. Some of my thoughts:
Bert & Kurt - Definitely Aquarius
Joan - yes, Virgo (attention to detail)
Pete - yes, Capricorn (ambition)
Roger - yes, Leo. But I don't see Greg & Duck there.
I think Peggy is more Sag - not marrying kind, frank
I am a Leo with Gemini rising. It fits me to a T.
I'll think about the others.
Peggy's not a Cancer. After all, she gave away the baby. Not the mothering kind, nor sentimental about her family. In fact, she keeps trying to get away from her family. She's not moody or emotional, even when she snaps at Don her voice remains even and cool.
Nor is she out-going enough to be a Sag.
Virgo with Libra rising would be my guess. She strikes me as an Earth sign and one that can view herself and the world critically and skeptically. Remember how critical she can be, how organized and good a secretary. She doesn't aim high; she is meticulous but not hugely ambitious and in need of the good things as a Capricorn would be (yet she still argues, successfully, that she's earned that office!). Very Virgo. The Libra rising is her way with words, the way she tries to maintain a balance, and her love and understanding of beauty ("Basket of kisses"). She's always aware of what's fair or unfair, just or unjust and wants partnerships with people, to be treated as an equal.
I actually would peg Joan as a Cancer with Virgo rising. She seems to be all organized Virgo--and, it being her rising sign, she does have that need and ability to keep everything neat and tidy and check things off the list...but underneath what she's really trying to do, and fulfill, is that need to be mother hen. To watch over all her chicks, sooth hurts and build a nest. There are very deep emotions there that she keeps locked away inside a shell and when they come out, they come out very powerfully. Unlike Peggy, her long-term goal was a home and family.
And come on. That pretty pen she wears around he neck? So very Cancerian! ;-)
Hi Ras and Thirteen: My best guesses: (and oops, I just realized I didn't refresh, so don't know if I'm stepping on other posts - pls forgive if I am, am adding this remark last)
Don: Aquarius, Scorpio rising, Scorpio moon
(Dons ability to understand the "collective" - the zeitgeist- is at his core. Scorpio rising, -sex, secrets etc, his way in the world - nod t Ras. Scorpio moon... his emotions... hidden, etc)
Betty: Libra, Scorpio rising (Libra, nod to Ras. Scorpio, resonates w/Don, plus her manipulative behaviors.) She and Don resonate through "air" and Scorpio... there was a good reason they married in the first place -- she can't have been without other suitors!
Joan: Virgo, Cancer rising, Leo moon (resonates with Roger) Nod to Thirteen, but think it reversed. She is all organized etc, also sharp, critical. And very beautiful - Virgo women often are. Cancer rising: her way in the world -caring for chicks etc (right on!), her pretty home, care of her home & hubby.
Roger: Leo, Gemini rising, Leo moon. He is creative with people, dominant, witty sharp tongue, self absorbed.
Bert: Aquarius, Taurus rising (determined!)
Sally: Taurus, Gemini rising (determined, and outspoken)
Peggy: Sagittarius, Libra rising, Aquarius moon. Again, nod to Thirteen on the Libra rising... Pegs is a good diplomat - she has to be! But for the Sag part... I think she does aim high, she is young and still exploring how to make that work - when to ramp it up so to speak (asking for Freddies office) - and "overstepping" asking for HiIton too soon etc. Her Aquarius moon supports her instinctve understanding of the zeitgeist... that quality verbalized by Don.
Pete: Capricorn (nod to Ras), Aquarius rising (Huge ambition (though awkward about how to make that work), and again, that instinctive connection to the times going forward.)
Trudy: Taurus, Cancer rising (Beauty, determination, is "mom" to Peter, etc.)
Miss Farrell.. sure you are right Ras.. there's Scorp in there somewhere!
What fun has been... thanks Ras and Thirteen!
This is fun reading. (I don't know enough about the rising and moon aspects of Astrology to really be informed though).
Just a sideline: Does anyone remember the month of Sally's birthday (back in S2)? Figuring back from the date of their marriage and going on the assumption that Betty was pregnant when they married it could probably be figured out, if it wasn't clear from the S2 birthday party episode.
We know Baby Gene was born in June...
I don't think we've had clues or references in the show to any other characters birth months, have we?
Given that MW knows something about The Tarot....
Hi Wasthere... Drat! I was so intent on how to write down my thoughts re Ras and Thirteen that I forgot to say that I so agree with you! You called it re Peggy/Sag... and as you see, me too!
Hi TakeFive! OK... thinking cap on. Betty says that the DonAnna divorce (Feb 14 '53) was 3 months before their wedding. So that gives us a May, (or just possibly early June) wedding. I can't remember if there were date clues for Sallys b-day party in S-1.. but I have the sense it was in May (will find out tonight when I screen my new S-! DVD!) Going on my suppostion... Betts was not preggers with Sally. Though she could have been pregnant at the time of the wedding and lost the baby in an early miscarriage... I believe many miscarriages were early on in the pregnancy... (other maddicts, please correct me if I'm in error there.)
Yes, Melba Toast-- Sally's birthday party was on a day warm enough for the children to play in her new playhouse outdoors, without coats, I believe. So Betty evidently wasn't pregnant with Sally when they married. I need to watch S1 and S2 again too for perhaps more clues. This makes it all fun!
Fun thread Rasputin1963! Wonderful guesses and theories, everyone. I'm so impressed at the overall level of knowledge here.
Actually we know Joan's exact birthdate because it was on her Xeroxed driver's license. Remember when Kinsey posted it on the breakroom bulletin board? Joan is a Pisces sun. Late February birthday. I think it was Feb. 24, 1931? I imagine she might have Mars and Venus conjunct in Aries = passionate, understands the opposite sex.
We also saw Baby Gene's birthdate on his birth certificate. He's a Gemini sun, (I think it was June 21st) very close to the Cancer cusp.
Don is probably a Scorpio with an air moon and I'd bet money he has a Capricorn ascendant. Cap rising is somehow forced to be an adult at a young age, serious, ambitious, usually a difficult and painful childhood. Venus in Scorpio. Chiron (wound) in the 4th house (home, early life, mother) in Taurus. Emphasis on 8th and/or 12th houses. Secrets.
IMHO Betty doesn't seem to have many characteristics of a classic Libra who desires harmony, balance, partnership, etc.? Maybe Virgo sun and Aquarius moon. Depending on other factors, sometimes an Aquarian moon can indicate a cold, aloof, non-nurturing mother. On that note, Saturn in Cancer or the 5th house.
Peggy strikes me as a possible Taurus with other strong earth placements. Sally is such a classic Taurus. Both have their stubborn streaks! Sally also has the innocence, soulful eyes, and fiesty temper of a true Taurean.
Trudy is very Cancerian and also has a peacemaking Libran quality to her personality = Cancer sun, Libra moon. Maybe Taurus rising? Charming and cares deeply about creating a comfortable home.
Pete might be a Pisces sun with Scorp rising and moon in Aries.
@Melba: I believe Betty was preggers with Sally when she and Don married. Sally's b-day was on a day hot enough that Don was in a teeshirt and drinking cold beer. Might have been August or early September.
@TakeFive: quick and dirty astrology lesson--Rising sign is the face you wear in public, how people see you and the part of you that you show to the world. I know a Virgo with Sag rising, and everyone guesses he's a Sag. That's the face they see. But when he gets to work, he's pure Virgo.
Moon is all about your comfort zone. Someone with a Gemini moon is happiest and feels safe when engaged in stimulating conversation. A Cancer moon feels most comfortable and happy at home with family.
In the London Fog episode, Don tells the stewardess it's his birthday--presumably his real, Dick Whitman birthday, not his fake Don Draper birthday that appears on the license he won't let her see.
What time of year would that episode have taken place? I'm thinking early spring. Betty was already showing, and it seemed was cold enough at night that people were bundling up during the fire alarm. Any more specific ideas on the timing? If we can pinpoint it, we'll have Don's sign.
My sister lives her life according to astrology. Will not make important moves at certain times, etc. However, I can't get her to watch the show. Very frustrating!! She would love this thread.
Hey bluegirl! Wow, and brava! What excellent details and what fun to read... I am but a dabbler and you are brilliant at this! Loved your takes, esp. Dons 4th house Chiron (I thought oh wow, of course!). And Betty as Virgo etc, Peggy as Taurean... very possible....
Hi Thirteen.... ok, but wasn't Sally 6 years old at her b-day party in 1960... which would put her birth in '54, not the wedding year of '53 ??? I probably missed something, so help me out...
HI Gwen... what a good idea... review the ep for time clues!
Hi wasthere.... maybe you can talk her into with all the great reviews it getting! Astrology can be a fascinating and useful subject... and on the MM front I seem to remember a similar astro thread waaaay back there..
Your moon is in uranus!
Actually, I'm working on a post on this very topic for my own blog!!
I've got Capricorn for Don Draper - Scorpios are not easily able to compartmentalize their lives the way Don does. Capricorn is all about the end justifying the means and success being the ultimate goal.
Betty is quite obviously the Libra - she is all about relationships and beauty, but rather unemotional in the way she handles them. Libra is more about the idea of relationship than the actual feelings.
Joan - I assigned her to Taurus. Definitely earthy, but more sensual than Virgo.
I gave Virgo to Peggy. She's cautious, hard-working and earnest, and not really very emotional as she would be as a Cancer.
Roger Sterling is my Sagittarius - he mostly wants to love life and have fun. He doesn't care that much about what people think, which is why I gave Leo to
Pete Campbell. Other's opinions are VERY important to Pete, and he definitely requires their admiration and affirmation.
Paul Kinsey I assigned to Aquarius - he had a black girlfriend and went to protest in Mississippi, liked jazz music. He's a beatnik at heart, and likes being the oddball.
Ken Cosgrove is my Gemini - very good with words (as his poetry shows), and he's able to shapeshift through different moods and environments.
I gave Cancer to Harry Crane - he is the most family-oriented of all of the characters.
Sal Romano is Pisces - his sensitivity and artistic nature made it difficult for him to navigate through the politics of his sexuality.
Bert Cooper is my Aries but I'm sure he has some quirky Aquarius in there as well. He's not afraid to tell anyone what he thinks, and he wants what he wants - the quintessential Aries.
And Duck Phillips I gave to Scorpio. He's very aware of the power dynamics between people and not afraid to play the power games. He's got that sexy streak as we saw in his relationship with Peggy, and we've seen that he definitely will hold a grudge with that Scorpio sting.

Interesting that most of us do not quibble on the Polarity of each character: ie., whether they are a Masculine or Feminine Sign.
I don't think any of us can imagine, for example, Joan being anything other than a Feminine Sign, right?
We are all pretty certain that Roger simply has to be a Fire Sign as well.
I peg Don as being a Feminine Sign simnply because he's basically nonverbal... proceeds on his intuition.
Hi Ras... fun thread! Agree re Don as fem sign... and very intuitive. I've always thought of him as being a very "quick study" and super opportunistic in both senses of the word. And speaking of opportunity... I'll take this one to say how much I've enjoyed your opinions and insights on this forum. Hope you are well and happy in whatever you are doing.....
LynnH... I like the way you fitted a different sun sign to everyone... and regret that I don't know anything about Lost or Greys to appreciate your takes, but I'm passing it on to some friends who do...
Aw, thank you Melba! I'm just a dabbler too. I love your ideas, especially how you gave some of the characters synastry in their relationships! Awesome.
Everyone, I'm fairly certain Sally's birthday is in early May because Betty served mint juleps to the adults at Sally's birthday party. One of the guests commented on the drinks and Betty said, "It's that time of year." Which made me think it was very near the first weekend in May = Derby day. If so, then Sally is most definitely a Taurus.
Gwen72 has an excellent idea about "Out of Town" (Episode 1 of S3) and that it probably points to Don's true birthdate as Dick. I don't remember any specific dates being mentioned, but I thought that ep might be taking place in early spring as well, maybe March? We know it was sometime prior to May because of Roger's Derby party taking place in Episode 3. Perhaps Don is an Aries...?
Ras, great post re: polarities and elements, as well as Don's intuition. I loved that everyone feels Roger is a fire sign too.
This article really has me thinking. I am such a fan of the show madmen. Not sure what you are trying to say here.
