@Loves Mad Men: Thanks for your very articulate critique. Sounds like you took the time to read it.
Thanks for posting the link to the article, Take Five. I found it very interesting as it managed to articulate quite a lot of the feelings I have about the character, Betty, and the actress who portrays her, January Jones.
For anyone else intrested in reading the article, the link posted at 9:18 p.m is the one that worked for me.
@takefive: I not only read the article that your link connected me to but I also clicked on the link in the article that connected me to The Atlantic.
So, you're welcome.
@Zeralda: I liked the article for those same reasons. Thanks for your comment.
Excellent article, thx. I don't agree with the last line that Betty is 90% of Don's world outside of work. With all of his affairs, I would say more like 70%. He spent a lot of time w/that 1st gal, Midge?
@TakeFive, thanks for the article link.
I completely agree with that POV, and feel the same way about Betty's character, but could not articulate it so well.
I concur and love this character. Thanks again.
Good point, BoyToy. That 90% figure doesn't quite ring true, what with all of his affairs, and his world inside his own head (I often wonder what he's really thinking; he says relatively little). And I wonder what he really feels about Suzanne.
Thank you G. I've never understood all the venom aimed at Betty, nor the criticism of January's acting ability. Anybody who can generate that much discussion has something going for them (like there's no such thing as "bad publicity," or however that saying goes).
@TakeFive-I like how u put that, 'inside his own head'. I'd say Tony Soprano was w/Carmela more than Don/Betty, outside of his mafia work. He was home a lot, ate dinner w/her. Guess he had his own hours! (& didn't sleep over his gumar's)
Always puzzling to read criticisms of Betty/January...Seems as if the critics haven't watched the show but jumped in on one episode and decided against her based on her character's state of development. In many ways Betty's evolution is one of the most fascinating things about the show...She's reached the point of being able to confront Don and beat him down to a confession yet can emphasize with him more now than when she was the "little princess". As for Don, he's the troubling one now...It's difficult to watch him crying big tears over Adam to Bets while Miss Farrell is waiting in the car. When he follows by telling her he can't see her...For a while...Yikes! MM started out giving us Don Draper as a flawed but fundamentally decent man but this behavior following his last-season "redemption" leaves one wondering if we can trust a word out of his mouth.
I also never understood the Betty hating, TakeFive, it takes a lot of talent to simmer the way she does, and to keep all that inner turmoil bubbling away just below the surface.
I think she's just as good as any of the superb actors on MM, even better (than any of them) in her scenes with Don concerning the affair with Bobbie (white bathrobe/face scrubbed ("Do you hate me?"/ "You never say you love me.") and the recent scene with The Box.
Enjoyed the article, thanks for posting.
