When Harry Should've Met with Sal(ly)

I know that having a backbone isn't one of Harry's traits, but really, if ever there was a time for him to stand up it was this past episode. Much of the situation they all found themselves in could've been avoided if Harry told Sal about the phone call request from Mr. Lucky Strike. Harry still would've been keeping his word in not telling Pete or Roger, and although Harry didn't have the authority to fire Sal, I think he owed it to his friend and co-worker to let him know the client has a problem with him. Of course Sal would know the real reason for Lucky Strike wanting him gone, and he could've removed himself from campaign, citing a whole slew of excuses -- keep in mind that Lucky Strike didn't ask for Sal to be fired from S-C, just "gone."

Instead, Harry does nothing and causes such a disaster that I'm surprised he wasn't fired as well.

I wonder of this could be a turning point in Harry's character. His inaction caused a friend and co-worker to be bluntly fired, as well as put a $25M account in jeopardy. SURELY this guilt must rest extremely heavily on his shoulders for many more episodes.

You're right it's so unfair. They really should have fired Harry. He was the guilty party. And I like how right after he get's the call from Lucky Strike Jr. he tells Paul that "I'm not going to quickly jump into a big mistake like I have in the past." No this time, he does nothing which leads to an even bigger mistake. Of course he should have gone straight to Roger. Well, straight to Sal, and then Roger.

I thought Slattery, even though he was only in this episode for a few minutes at most, made the most lasting impression. I think he really knows how to capture the space he's working in. Actors on this forum might know better how to put this into words. Or do I simply mean scene stealer, though not by underhanded tricks, but simply by being one supremely talented actor.

Love those glasses on Roger. Apparently, they are Slattery's own.

Okay, my bias is showing. Were we talking about Harry and Sal? I always get sidetracked whenever Roger's name comes up...

Harry is a screwup. I just kept thinking how Joan got shuffled aside when she briefly worked for the TV department, but stupid Harry actually got a promotion from the Brits when they reorganized. If Joan were still working with Harry or better yet, if she had his job, she would handled the whole thing beautifully and kept everyone happy.

NNT: Good minds think alike. I agree with yours and spek1's and keylimepie's analysis of the Harry fiasco. What an inept, bow-tied baby he is!

As for Slattery...I have had a crush on him since his "Sex and the City" days. His portrayal of Roger only makes him sexier. Oh, and yes, he is a great actor, too!

@keylimepie - I was really disappointed when Joan didn't get the job permanently in the TV department. She was excellent at that job and the 2 clients she met in one episode really seemed to like her. I was hoping it would be written that those 2 guys would insist on getting Joan back on the job.

I am really shocked that Sal was fired. First Joan left and now this. I really hope it is just temporary. I haven't read anything about the actors leaving the show so I assume Joan & Sal will be back.

I've liked Slattery since he played a post-war unionizer on Homefront. And I even liked him on Ed as a foil for Ed in winning Carol's affections.

Maybe if Joan comes to the SC anniversary party and hears what went down with Harry, Sal and Lucky Strike, she could remind Roger and Lane that the incident wouldn't have become a major problem if she had been around. No one handles people like Joan. Actually she is perfect Accounts material, but I think like the rest of you, that she will find her way back to SC by way of the media department. Hopefully ASAP as SC needs her and she needs SC.
