This show is becoming a soap opera
More on Joan, Sal, Peggy - those story lines are interesting. But 1 more affair from Don? I get it, he runs whenever he's threatened, upset, blah, blahh. not asking to change his character, but does it have to be the main story line every week? Betty'srelationship with Henry is more interesting because it's a NEW STORY LINE.

Exactly. Let's check what we know now that we didn't know in episode 1 this season:
1) Grandpa died. Yet, no disposal of his will, personal effects.
2) Baby Gene is born.
3) Don lands Hilton account, signs contract.
4) Hilton is the client from hell.
5) Don starts affair with teacher.
Those revelations took 9 episodes. I used to wish MM had 24 episodes a season, but now am thinking 13 may be too many.
I thought it was only me that was getting bored.
Your (sic) not bored. Disinterested.
Remember what Betty said, "only boring people get bored."
485, let's go play outside.
I am really over Don Draper and his cheating ways. Obviously he is a sex addict, but he needs to be a man and get over it. In season 1, I watched this show because of Don's character. I understand that he is unhappy, angry, not even really Don Draper - but he is really angry with himself, not Betty. Betty is the most beautiful woman on the show by far. I loved last week's episode when the Draper's were in Rome. For a brief moment, you could see what it's like when the Draper's are happy together. Obviously, Don and Betty have great sexual chemistry. Don is obviously attracted to her and Betty certainly knows how to attract him when she wants to.
I don't like Don's new conquest, the school teacher. She is a slut and not even a very attractive one. Just like the rest of his slutty mistresses. The only woman I liked was Rachel until she slept with him knowing he was married. I was hoping she'd turn him down. Women should respect other women. Knowing a man is married and sleeping with him anyway just makes you a slut and just as responsible for the hurt caused to his wife and children. There is no excuse for it. I've always stayed away from women like that - I have no desire to be friends with them. They lack character. I lost all respect for Rachel when she did it.
I was more interested in Betty's relationship with Henry Francis. I think he is a very attractive man. He is more attractive than Don now. I am glad that Betty ultimately turned him down, for now. I think she still wants to work on her relationship with Don. Don, however, becomes less attractive the more he cheats. Handsome as he is, his personality has made him less and less attractive as the seasons go by..
I would like to see more of the storylines of: Don Draper vs. Dick Whitman, Sal, Peggy, Joan. And I love the scenes in the ad agency. Betty is my favorite character so any scene with her in it - I'd like to see more of Henry Francis. Betty deserves better than Don. I would like to see them stay together, but not if Don can't stop his cheating. I hope this cheating with the school teacher storyline doesn't go on for too long. I've had enough already.

Sorry my above comment posted twice.
Get over the cheating, folks...This is how Don socialises!
@Gavin, exactly! Don's like an alcoholic with no AA to go to, no therapist, not even a priest. He's constantly tempted, and when times are good, he resist those temptations. When times are bad, he gives in because he's on his own and there's no one to help him resist. He may slow down, he may work harder to be better, but he will never stop being an alcoholic.
In the end, though, posts like this put the poor show between a rock and a hard place. When Don doesn't play Don Juan and romance the ladies, we get posts here complaining that the show's is getting boring. When he does, we get posts complaining that the show is repeating itself, been there, done that, and it's boring. The show can't win! Even an amazing, shocking, wild episode of a man losing his foot to a lawn mower, which can't possibly be considered boring gets people whining: "It's jumped the shark!" because it's too exciting!
I don't know why viewers can't identify with Don--you're just like him and half the characters on this show. Easily bored, never satisfied, not even when the show mixes things up. You want the moon and you whine when you don't get it. I sometimes wonder, what, exactly, drew people to this show and what do they need to see over and over again every week to be satisfied, as neither episodes at home nor at the office, affairs or lack of affairs seem to work. Should the show be only bar scenes where the guys kick back with cocktails and oysters?
Look. The way this show works was wonderfully described in one interview with Vincent K. This show is a steak dinner in that you always get Don. But the sides change to make sure you don't (in theory) get bored. Sometimes those sides will be the "soap opera" ladies and their romances--Betty, Joan, Peggy. Sometimes it's the office and you'll get Roger, Pete, Sal. Sometimes it'll be what you want, sometimes not. But Don is the centerpiece and there's no way switch him out. You go to a Steak house they give you a steak dinner. You want a different hero every week, chicken or fish instead? Watch Heroes or Lost or Grey's Anatomy where they rotate main characters on and off the menu.
This is MadMen, and it is what is. So tie that napkin around your neck, tuck in and enjoy. The steak will always be juicy and tender. And if you get salad as a side dish and don't want salad, well, next week maybe you'll get a side french fries or creamed corn.
Oh, and as a P.S.--when MadMen has Betty having an affair with Don's long lost twin brother, while Pete and Trudy adopt a kid and it turns out to be Peggy's baby which she wants back, and Joan stabs Greg for trying to rape her again and goes on trail for it while Sally, after a terrible accident, lies in the hospital waiting for a transplant, THEN it will be a soap opera. Until then, it's not a soap opera. It has never been a soap opera and I hope it never will be a soap opera. It is so far not a soap opera that I find it really offensive that anyone would imply that it's gone "soap opera."
Learn what a soap opera is before you start accusing an amazing and very different sort of drama to a soap opera.
Thirteen, I love everything about MM. I'm just getting bored with Don's sex addiction. At least he treated the school teacher like the slut that she is by making the "someone like you" comment. However, I agree that MM is no soap opera. The writing is far superior to a soap opera.
I'm very interested in Betty's storyline with Henry Francis. I'm glad she turned him down for now, but would like to see where it goes. I also want to see a lot more of the Sal storyline. I wonder what happened after he got out of the phone booth. It was clear he was in an area where gay men hang out. I also love Peggy, Joan, and Roger. Hilton is an interesting character. I love the scenes from the office and the ad campaigns. I would love to see more of Don, but not in the cheating on Betty sense. I love seeing him in action in the office. I thought his "you people" comment to Sal was a little harsh. I also want to get back to the Don Draper/Dick Whitman storyline.
I was happy with the way this season was going until he ended up with the school teacher. I started watching MM because of how attractive Don (Jon Hamm) is. The cheating makes him less and less attractive to me. As was discussed on another poll, some women like bad boys and some women wouldn't give them the time of day. I'm one who wouldn't give them the time of day so I guess that's why I don't like Don's cheating.
@ Pete Fan - first off, I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes the character (in spite of his douchiness)! Second, your point about the show devolving into a soap opera re: Don's storylines is well taken. As soon as Don picked up Ms. Farrell jogging I knew that we'd be seeing Don cheat again. Can no woman turn him down? I get that he's classically handsome, but he's not really THAT charming IMO. The teacher disappointed me - she summed up very nicely the reasons to not sleep with him and then did so anyways!
Frankly, I think the bigger problem with this season is that it's been TOO Draper family-focused. I'm getting sick of being beaten over the head with their problems - they're the same as last season just plus an extra baby. There have been a few strong moments (seeing Betty in her element in Rome made us understand how their relationship started, etc) but mostly I say blah. Betty's subplot with Henry was a welcome change, but it's been developed very strangely. Still, it's nice to see her interacting with someone besides the kids (and for the record, I have no beef with the child actors - they're doing fabulously. But I don't watch this show for them and I'd rather some of Sally's screentime be used for other characters). I actually thought her few scenes with Carla this past week were very strong - that's a dynamic that can and should be more developed. Still, give me more Peggy, Pete (seriously can those two have a few more scenes together? Please? It's not for romance - their scenes interest me infinitely more than almost anything between Betty and Don), Joan, Roger, office boys - anything. In fact, it'd be nice to see Don interacting with other characters in the office again. I've mentioned this elsewhere, but I really miss the Pete-Don dynamic.
@ Thirteen, I actually really liked "Guy walks into an Advertising Agency" - low on Draper family melodrama, high on office excitement (even aside from the lawnmower) and more fleshing out of the British guys. Did anybody else think/expect Pryce and Hooker to be more important than they've turned out to be? It's really too bad because we saw another side of Pryce in "Guy walks into an advertising agency" but it's not been explored more since.
I really felt this episode was a waste. I watched it again because I was so tired the first time and thought I might have been unfair. Nope. There was something off about it. I felt it was very "soapy" I know the sixties were all about sex blah blah. Time for Don to get a divorce or grow up.
@ Polar Bear. OK, let play outside. Better than banging my head against the wall. PS if you were insulting me I didn't get it.
