Random Miss Farrell thought...

If Betty and the kids hadn't returned from Philly early, Don and Suzanne would've been cozying up in Norwich. Now I know that Don can skip off from work for days on end, but how easy would it be for a schoolteacher in those days? And even if she could get away from work, I thought it kind of weird that Suzanne -- who despite her faults seems to truly love nurturing children's minds -- would cut work and leave town and miss Halloween, such a magical and important day in a kiddie calendar.

@spek: Everything about that teacher is weird. Her only real concern was if she was going to lose her job or not. She didn't even ask him if the kids were okay and if that was the reason they were home. Everything about her is fraudalent and that is why Don can relate to her.

Suzanne is a fraud and that is why Don relates to her so well. Her only real concern when Don called her was if she was going to lose her job. She didn't even ask if the kids were alright. So much for her "caring soul".

This is weird. This program said I couldn't post the first one because I type too fast, so I posted the second one and it said the same thing. Now I see them both up there.

Well your just not good at this. Why is it that you need 3 separate threads to say the same thing . You must be a little confused. You'll catch on, its not hard you'll see. I have confidence in you.

Spek1, is there a possibility that Suzanne could not conceive and that's why she loves children and became a teacher? Sure they prolly would of been gone for a week but isn't that how these illicit affairs are? Once the initial physical attraction has waned everyone comes to their senses.

Uh, Loves Mad Men -
Why is Christopher's avatar on your profile? Seems kinda weird.

Not certain what day of the week Halloween was on but could easily have been Friday although Don said he'd clear his schedule for the rest of the week. Anyway, she could call in sick. Teachers, even dedicated ones like Miss Farrell, do get sick, you know.

The bashing of Miss Farrell on this and other threads reveals far more about the bashers than the bashee. The writers are using Miss Farrell as a clever representation of the Rohrschach tests so popular in the behavioral sciences during the 1960s. She's soft-spoken; they're shrill. She's sleek and beautiful; it's a good bet they're known by their equine features and pulpy bodies. She's a Bowdoin alum; they're community-college or night-schoolers, if even that. She's successful in her career; they're bitter dead-enders. She's surpassingly feminine; they range from unappealing to repugnant. The show's producers have done their research exceedingly well, and this is a great example.

Halloween was a Thursday in 1963. (http://www.searchforancestors.com/utility/dayofweek.html)

So it seems like Suzanne and Don were embarking on their trip on Wednesday evening, taking 2 days off. Suzanne (like many teachers) sometimes use sick days when they need (or want) a day off. Not a stretch at all.

Ritt, yeah go figure.

Yes, I went to catholic school and day after Halloween was a holiday, although Halloween itself was not.

I can't get a handle on Miss Farrell. I never liked her, although I didn't have a problem with her asking about her job. That was a real moment, I felt - her knowing if the wife found out, she would probably be fired.

One issue I have is men who are distant and can't commit tend NOT to want to spend the night. They screw around, stay for a while, then split. Especially if they have wives. (It's also a good excuse.) His spending the night always rings false to me.

Also, since Betty found out Don had affairs when he would "spend the night" in the city, I don't believe she would let him just disappear all night, once again. It would never happen. His days of being gone all night would be over.

After the kids' Halloween party at school (which I assume most teachers still adhere to), Miss Farrell was done with the holiday, mainly because she lives above the main house and probably wouldn't be handing out candy. Since Fred2 has explained that H was on a Thursday that year, she just planned to call in sick for Friday I bet....although, sadly for her, she never got the chance. Don called her the next morning and she was home....probably needed a "mental health day" to moon over the disappointment and/or fear.
