Paul's Big Idea
Anyone have any guesses as to what Paul's idea was?

Telegram... The poisonous arrow. I mean, no, no idea at all... :)
No idea but it probably had to do with family and heritage. Things handed down. Important. Memorable.
Maybe after his conversation with Achilles, he thought of Greek Mythology and perhaps something about the myth of Marathon and how running 26 miles to deliver a message can kill you, so why not send a telegram instead. He probably envisioned a commercial where the first scene showed the messenger delivering the message to Sparta and collapsing to death. Then in the replay scene, it's a Western Union guy delivering the message to the general or whoever...
Something about Hermes?
But I like Betty's idea better.
Hermes! I forgot about him. He was the messenger god.
Communication that you can treasure and hold onto... just like a family name along with all the love and warmth that comes from that family and the name (telegram) which will be kept as dear and passed along from father to son to grandson.
Come on people, it was ACHILLES he was talking to. So was the Mercury character already a logo for Western Union? Or was it the comment Achilles made about every head in the room turning when someone said "Achilles"? You know, the Western Union messenger show ups in the room and all heads turn....
I think the idea that Peggy pitched in the meeting with Paul & Don was originally Paul's. I think she stole the idea from his office when he was passed out. She feels inferior in the male environment and didn't have any ideas of her own, so she chose an underhanded way to get the recognition she feels entitled to.
@maryse: I do think the "all heads turned" idea struck Paul as a great scene. There is a certain trepidation associated with receiving a telegram....either it's really good news, money or bad news. The FTD florist logo is Mercury (or Hermes in Greek mythology) and makes you think of flower delivery. Maybe drunk Paul suddenly had a flash of genius and thought "Candy-Gram". LOL!
@charm: You know, I had the same thought...that maybe Peggy found the idea Paul had written down (but forgot he wrote before passing out on the couch...ew. Is there a shower at SC??).

I've heard a saying in the ad world from one of the top writers that the best thing to do when you have a great idea is to go get totally hammered until you pass out. When you wake up the next day, if you can't remember the idea, it wasn't that good to begin with.
Paul seemed to be taking that advice, so I guess his idea wasn't as brilliant as he thought :)
I'm with Maryse, I think it was something off of Achille's last remark. (Or is Achilles a heel?)
I have sometimes gotten high, thought I had a great idea, written it down, then later it was gibberish - or was it just that my sober third eye was now closed and I could not understand it anymore?
