Mad Men Dinner

We are going to have a Mad Men dinner for the season finale. The drink will be a Scotch Old Fashioned. The salad will be an Iceberg Wedge with bleu cheese. The entree will be Beef Stroganoff. Any other ideas from this Mad crowd?

@Dagney: Appetizer: Oysters Rockefeller
A nice red wine (Imported Amarone?)
Dessert: New York Cheesecake
Demitasse Espresso with Anisette

Date nut bread. I noticed in season 2 that Betty had that at the around the world dinner party. And then of course Suzanne in season 3.

Apple pie warmed in the oven [not microwave] with a chuck of sharp cheddar. That's what we had here in Chicago at Stouffers Restaurant when I was a young squire.....

user-pic

Above not dinner obviously. One of the entre's was Lobster Newburg.... Raised rolls... Also we had Plantation cake warmed with lemon butter sauce.....

I think Betty served Heineken beer at her Around the World dinner party - may be nice for any friends who don't want/like harder liquor.

Although...I don't think that party ended very well...

user-pic

Alter Ego, The Heineken was served because Don was having a dinner party for a Heineken promotion... If I remember correctly. Maybe I'm wrong,if so ,my apologies...

user-pic

@christopher, yes you are remembering correctly

user-pic

I remember also having oven roasted leg o lamb with mint jelly. Potatoes au gratin.... I'm getting hungry !!

user-pic

Dagney, so what time is dinner, did you say?

default userpic

I kind of disagree...Betty did NOT serve Heineken beer because Don was having a party to specifically promote Heineken. It is true that Don was putting together a promotion for the beer that targeted women similar to his wife - the appeal of something foreign and therefore exotic. Sure enough, Betty fell for this marketing, and put together an around the world dinner that included "beer from Germany" (? wherever it's from). The men at the table kind of laughed at her and congratulated Don for being able to so accurately read his wife. Betty was not pleased.

This is great! I also had another suggestion for Brandy Alexanders as an after dinner drink.

Well, Dagney, since you already have your drinks, salad and entree chosen, I'd say you need a dessert:

How about a nice dark chocolate cake with seven minute frosting?

Or.....zerelda....Is it too early to post your recipe for that yummy (if troublesome!) Red Velvet Cake of yours?

user-pic

This is a clever thread Dagney!

I'm thinking character based foods would be good to bring...

Bert C.: sushi
Don/Dick: devil's food cake
Betty: meatloaf (without salt), and red wine
Suzanne: pasta from Little Italy
Roger: vodka with cream, oysters
Jane: a glass of milk
Sal: Patio Cola
Joan/Dr No: anything HE doesn't have to carve
Peggy: duck
Duck: crab
Pete and Trudy: flying roast chicken
Paul: "special" brownies
Ken: hot dogs (from Shea Stadium)
Harry: TV dinner
Lois: leg of lamb, leg of anything
Pryce and Moneypenny: Royal Crown Cola

I'm sure there are more...

I can't cook to save my life...so, I'll bring hot water soup. Any "Green Acres" fans out there?!

Alter Ego -
You're right about why Betty picked up the beer. Heineken is from the Netherlands, not Germany.

user-pic

"... or a nice frosty glass of beer from Holland" is what Betty said when presenting her menu at the dinner party. And sorry, Christopher, you are wrong. AlterEgo is right. Betty knew nothing about an ad campaign for Heiniken when she purchased the beer. She was really "frosted" about that when the guys did their knowing chortling about it.

user-pic

How about Cheese Fondue or Welsh Rarebit? My mother did a lot of dinner parties back then (with great creative panache, I might add!) and I seem to remember these two dishes were good crowd pleasers!

user-pic

Fondue is 70s, not 60s.

user-pic

Dessert: Frozen Strawberry Sara Lee pie.

user-pic

Oh, I like this idea. Regarding the main course...what did Joan serve up for her dinner to the doctors? Or maybe we should just go for a good steak? And really, shouldn't dessert be apple pie, in honor of Betty and Henry's little date at that bakery?

Will there be something from Paul's college friend to smoke afterwards? ;-)

user-pic

All I can tell you, February, is that my mother served this stuff at her dinner parties in the 60's! She was very progressive and was always doing things that nobody elses mother were doing. (She had been an actress and was quite creative and accomplished!)

Thirteen, I think I remember Joan saying she had to "go check the roast", but not sure....don't know what she had for sides and dessert, or don't recall (CRS)

And, you can't ever go wrong with apple pie, IMO.

user-pic

Don't forget the cheese...and Ritz crackers!

user-pic

Katie, yes Welsh Rarebit. Brilliant !!

user-pic

Katie,yes Welsh Rarebit. Brilliant!!!

user-pic

Christopher~ It was made by Stouffer's, if I remember correctly!

user-pic
user-pic

Some type of gelatin salad!

user-pic

Katie,I think I actually at it back then at Stouffers on Randolph & Wabash st. Then it was in the frozen food section.... Yummy!

user-pic

Laurie B, Okay I get I'm wrong . So sorry...

user-pic

@SCFan>Thirteen, I think I remember Joan saying she had to "go check the roast"

You're right! We got see that roast. But I don't think there was any mention of the sides or dessert (though I think we got to see some sort of appetizer, didn't we?). So, maybe a nice roast for the main course?

user-pic

Christopher~ Was that in Chicago?

user-pic

Stouffers Katie , was downtown across from Marshall Fields on State st. in Chicago. It was under the el tracks on the Nw corner on Randolph & Wabash.

user-pic

Christopher~I don't think we had an actual Stouffer's back then (in Buffalo). My mother used their frozen Welsh Rarebit.

user-pic

Katie, there was also one I forgot about at the bottom of the Prudential Bldg. On Michigan Ave.
