Confessions of Mad Men
Don's confession to Betty is getting all the attention--with good reason. But isn't it interesting to note the contrast between that confession and the one Greg made to Joan?
Don's confession was big, dramatic, and forced by Betty. Greg, on the other hand, casually volunteered the information to Joan that his father had a nervous breakdown. He then flippantly said something like, "I can't believe I never told you that before."
The wives' reactions differed, too. Betty couldn't help but to comfort Don about his brother. The next day, Betty and Don acted much more considerately toward each other, almost as one would with an acquaintance.
Greg and Joan, on the other hand, were operating on different planes. Greg whined, and Joan snapped and hit him over the head with a vase.
And let's not forget that a few episodes back, Pete "confessed" his most recent infidelity to Trudy without saying a word, and this seemed to bring them closer.
What do you think all of these confessions mean for the characters' relationships?

Well, Gwen72, I think Pete confessing to Trudy showed some maturity. Finally, bc he's been the biggest baby of all.
I don't think you can compare Greg's confession to Don's. It's like trying to compare a canoe to an ocean liner.
As for Don and Betty, they were more considerate of each other. Betty asked Don if he wanted breakfast and he said "Are you having breakfast" or something like that. It was if he said I'll have some if you have some, but don't go to any trouble just for me. That's a switch
Good point about all the confessions, large and small. I'm in agreement with rnpen that Greg's confession is not quite comparable to Don's--Greg's confession doesn't change much in their marriage, but Don's confession changes everything. Still, you're right. Both are confessions. And so is Pete's confession to Trudy, which ironically brings them closer together.
Getting back to Greg's confession, when he confesses it, Joan is delighted and understanding. She only hits him with a vase later, when he comes back from the interview to tell her that he blew it, and then whines that she can't understand what he's going through. So it wasn't that confession that got him clobbered over the head.
One thing that the confessions seem to have in common is that they say, "You don't really know me." Don's obviously, is the Titanic of those, while Pete's and Greg's are rowboats, but that is the gist of all three.
Hi everyone, Am i the only one that thought joan acted out of character? you have to be pretty sick to hit someone with
a glass vase. I can see telling him to stop whining and
that she changed HER life for him, and then say get your sorry ass up and dont give up.. or i will leave . or just throw some books downs or something, i felt what she did was very violent.
also
she was marrying him for the status and the money, so
hey, you know, maybe this is a lesson she needed to learn.
Money hungry, social climbers... too bad its not working
out the way she fantazied. Shes not angel either, correct me
If am wrong, but her affair with roger, was he married at the time.
anyway, my two cents.
@Vanessa>"Am i the only one that thought joan acted out of character? you have to be pretty sick to hit someone with a glass vase."
Um, no she didn't act out of character and she's not in the least bit sick to hit him with a vase. Not given everything we've seen her going through with Greg for over the last year, starting with the fact that he raped her last season.
She's put up with that, put up with the fact that he made promises he couldn't keep, didn't let her in on the fact that he was in trouble as a surgeon, made her cook and perform for his colleagues, made her quit her excellent and well paying job then told her that she'd have to get another one too late for her to find one that paid as well, put it all on her to financially support them both, told her he wanted to be a shrink, but didn't even try to be one, and then finally whined and complained that she had no understanding of what it was to be disappointed.
Out of character? I think just about everyone thought that Joan was going to do worse than she to did Greg long before now and justifiably so. And just what would YOU have hit Dr. Rapist with after a year of his bitching, moaning, broken promises, forcing you to scramble to fix the mess he makes, and pushing you to have sex even when you didn't want to?
Throw a book at him after all that? I'd have hit him with the accordion!
And no, she didn't marry him for his status and money. He had neither when she married him. She married him for the promise he gave her that BOTH of them would one day have status and security if they BOTH worked together to make him a success. That is what she thought she was getting into, and everything we've seen of their marriage has shown her tirelessly working to selflessly help him be that success.
Putting it another way, yes, you're the only one who thinks she acted out of character or was "sick" given her response to his last-straw-patronizing insult that she couldn't possibly understand what it's like to be disappointed.
But don't worry, she knows first aid.
Yes, Thirteen! That's what I was getting at (though I omitted a step in the thought process when writing it) when I said that Joan reacted to Greg's confession by hitting him over the head with a vase. While she didn't whack him imediately, by the later scene she had reached a point where she couldn't veil her frustration, anger, and disappointment any longer. We've seen Joan gracefully put up with so much from the employees of SC. But this is her life. Her husband has treated her poorly in all of the ways that you mentioned, and then to top it off, he just happened to "forget" to tell her about a family history of psychological instability. Joan's expectations have been dashed. It will be interesting to see how the writers handle Greg's army experience and Joan's place in it.
