Call me sentimental

but I have never eaten horsemeat and do not expect to in this lifetime. Of course, I have never been starving either , and as they say, desperate times call for desperate measures. I pray I will never be that desperate. What about my fellow Maddicts. Have any of you eaten horsemeat?

No z, I have not. But, listening to Annabelle say how people eat beef (cows), poultry (chickens), and pork (pigs) as well as venison (deer), it does seem strange in a way. I'm sure if one is hungry enough.....

I hope I never have to eat horsemeat, but, it would be better than bugs! Lots of countries eat those! Worms, too! Ick! There are some beyond-gross items folks eat in different cultures, it all depends on what one is used to, I guess.

Horses, cats, dogs...even rabbits...I can live without. I'm not too "wild" about venison either.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Alpo criticized at one time for using kangaroo meat? I don't have dogs (just cats who eat dry food)....what's in dog food these days?

Hi zerelda!

I Never ate horse meat intentionally.
Wasn't there a time in the 1970s where there was a beef shortage, and horse meat was being sold as a substitute?
I seem to remember an "All In The Family" episode about that.

If you've (for whatever reason) eaten canned dog food... If the label says "meat byproducts," figure it out. I've been inside a few abandoned houses which were used by the ahem, homeless. Lots of dog and cat food cans.

As a vegetarian, & supporting member of PETA, it always amazes me how people are outraged by people eating something (ie. horses), but feel that eating any other living thing is just fine. I find it all pretty senseless, to me. Just don't get it.

@60schild: Hey, when they were in the mtg & they brought-up eating horsemeat, I immediately flashed back to the "All In The Family" episode you are talking about. Archie is eating (clulessly) at the table & makes a comment I think, about the toughness of the meat, or something, & Mike looks at him & wordlessly starts a galloping rollick, slapping his hands on his lap. Thanks for mentioning that.

@Ritt1: I guess DD didn't follow Robert Morse's character's advice in "Guide For The Married Man". When Betty opened the drawer, he should have picked-up the shoebox & the papers, walked toward the lit fireplace, & asked her, "What photos? What divorce decree? What house deed?"

Good word 60's child "intentionally" We have no real guarantee what is in our food bought in restaurants. I laugh when I see a chinese place in a strip mall beside an vets office. I do know of ships off the west coast where horses are taken and butchered to take the meat to Japan. I have always wondered why the cow, pig, squirrel, rabbit, chicken, deer, lamb and duck became food and other animals were just pets? I personally love the bison burgers at Teds Montana Grill.

I've never eaten horsemeat... yet I am cognizant that our taboos regarding it in the USA are probably strictly down to tradition, don't you suppose?

There's no especial reason, that I am aware of, why meat eaters shouldn't eat horse...

I've long known that dog foods and glue were the destinatioons for most dead horses.

As far as meat goes, G-d knows that they are by nature much cleaner animals than pigs or chickens, so.... go fig.

What's the rule for Kosher Jews? Cloven hoofs are OK... but solid hoofs are trayfe?

@jolie10

Speaking of kangaroo: McDONALD'S once got caught selling BIG MACs made of kangaroo imported from australia!!

I don't think this is just urban legend, either....

(urp).

Count me in as one who does not like any gamey-smelling wildgame meat...

Well, as I have gotten older, I have found myself eating less and less meat. My sister has sworn off entirely - says she can't eat anything with a face. I am reminded of Grandpa Walton who once said he no longer kept track of who was who in the hams as it was too sad remembering the actual animals with names.

I'm kind of mystified by all the squeamishness on this forum about eating horse meat. Most Europeans enjoy horse meat. Most of us eat cow meat, pig meat, poultry, deer, buffalo and bison and yes, rabbit meat - so what's so repugnant about horse meat? Is it because we regard horses as "pets," like dogs and cats? Most horses were farm animals, certainly work animals, not pets.
I have never eaten horse meat, but I would try it if offered.

was it ALPO dog food?

I have eated horse. I adopted my son from Kazakhstan and they do eat horse there. It was prepared like a stir fry and it was very good, spicy. The way it was prepared I had no idea it was horsemeat.

@liquor: Yes! Ted Turner's restaurant in Bozeman, Montana? I ate there last summer and tried bison for the first time. I'm not really a meat lover, but it was very good, and leaner than beef. Truthfully, I'd rather watch buffalo from my car.

@rasputin: I think I did hear about McDonald's doing something hideous like that. Ugh!
