Thank you for posting this...very interesting and great fun, too! Please post an update after the season ends, as I am sure there will be other places mentioned that you can add to the map.

very interesting as a former resident of Ossining, and a guy who worked in Tarrytown for 12 years,I am familiar with many of those locations. I do question some of their conclusions. Also why omit Rocky's estate in Pocantico hills which was mentioned a couple of times. Also on their map with the red dots, Gm is shown south of the Junior League and Main St. antique area. It is substantially to the North. I also dispute the area between rt 9 and North washington as an antiquing destination in 63. I believe that came along with the gentrification of the area over the last dozen years or so. sorry to nitpick. Overall I enjoy the map. would love to get a hint as to where the Draper home was. I always envisioned up near IBM off134 or down near the Scarborough area, maybe off Revolutionary rd.

The Drappers lived in Chilmark the houses behind the A&P on Pleasantville. I remember Betty's friend mentioning it when they were talking about the divorced woman.
The GM plant is south of the main area right near the Tappan Zee. And in '63 no one would go to Tareytown looking for antiques unless old junk furniture is your idea of an antique. It's only since the late 80's that the place has become much better and most people would still go to NYC or Greenwich for real antiques or in the country to Cold Spring etc
That area on Rt134 off 9A was mostly empty in '63 with only some estates till you got to the new IBM
Yes, Pocantico Hills should be on the map.On the other side of the road next to Phelps is an IBM but that wasn't there until '76. That's also Rocky's property which he sold to them but most of it was just left empty so you can walk there down to the river. The road through his estate connecting 9 to 9A wasn't there either in '63. If you've even gone to his estate (about 1000 acres) you'll see that there are mini estates within it. Kissinger has a house there. If you continue north on 9 you'll see an Aberdeen Angus sign, that's also Rocky's, it's a breeding farm. Next is Sleepy Hollow country club.

@zerelda — We're updating the map weekly, and the updates usually show up by Tuesday afternoon. Keep checking the site!

@hobocode52 — Nothing is "omitted," I assure you. Anything that's not on the map now is just because we haven't seen it or it hasn't been brought to our attention. (We added the Larchmont Yacht Club this week after readers reminded us about that reference.) We're constantly looking to add to the map, so all suggestions are welcome.

"Rocky's estate" doesn't ring a bell to me, but if you explain that a little more in the context of the show (when and how it was first mentioned, especially), we'll add it to the map.

Based on the data I found, the old GM plant is at the corner of Routes 9 and 119, which is south of both the Junior League address (35 S. Broadway) and the Main Street strip for antiquing.

I agree: the Tarrytown antiquing situation is a tough one to map, because none of the current antique stores on Main Street existed in 1963. If you can nail down the name of a store — or at least a better street for Tarrytown antiquing in those days — and I can confirm that info with sources on my end, we'll update the map accordingly.

@JeanM If you know which episode references the Draper house being behind the A&P, that'd be fantastic. Farm Road is close, but now I'm considering moving it closer to your (more accurate) A&P location if we can nail that down.

Good stuff, people. Good stuff. I want to make this map as accurate as possible, because all the details matter. Feel free to e-mail any follow-up Mad Men map info to me directly at cserico (at) lohud (dot) com.

Oh — and if anyone knows the specific location for the stables frequented in Season 2, that'd be huge. I don't recall if that venue was name-dropped or showcased at any point.

user-pic

Chris: that's what I said. The GM plant is on the river south of the main Tarrytown area just before the Tappan Zee bridge. I hear a new bridge may be built.
I don't exactly know where the stables are located but people used to ride on part of the Rockefeller estate(I guess he didn't mind) Those bridges on the new road through the estate are not for cars and I've only seen horses on them. I'll have to take a look if I'm in that area. I'm just guessing but if Betty was riding in this area there may be a stable on Old Sleepy Hollow Rd. or down where Pleasantville begins on Beech Hill Rd.

To quote Rich Sommer..."This is very cool."

Thanks for posting!

user-pic

Sorry to disagree Chris but the GM plant was in North Tarrytown 3 or 4 miles North of the bridge.

user-pic

Rocky;s estate also known as Pocantico hills was mentioned but I can't recall the episode. I think it was when Betty was still pregnant at the "blackface " party. will check on it and get back to you

user-pic

Chris okay in the episode entitled My Old Kentucky Home, their is a party under the tent at Roger's country club. Shortly before the Charleston number, Henry Francis an aide to the governor, mentions that he just came back from Pocantico Hills where he attended thewedding of Nelson and Happy Rockefeller

hobo: the GM plant is north of the bridge but it's right near the bridge less than 1/4 mile. When you're driving over the bridge heading towards Tarrytown just look to the left and you'll see it.If there's another plant I don't know it.
I also think that the reseach people may have visited Tarrytown and Ossining and assumed that it looked the same as in '63. As you're coming into Ossining on Rt9 there is a big hill. On the left is a shopping center but in '63 that was all greenhouses owned by Arcadian Gargens.
I was thinking so much about the Ossining area that I forgot that Betty may have gone riding in Bedford or Pound Ridge about 20 minutes away.

user-pic

@JeanM agreed when you are Rockland County bound the old GM sight is to your right. not far as the crow flies, but still to the North. If you were driving up route 9 from the South it would be about 4 miles north of the bridge, and a mile or two north of the antiquing area of main st. you would then make a left on Beekman av, and right at the river you could enter the plant. It was strategically located right alongside the railroad tracks.
I remember Arcadian gardens still there in the eighties in some capacity. On the left while Northbound on rt 9. I think it was actually the name of the shopping center there, which used to have an Ames? dep't store

user-pic

Hobo: as you're crossing the Tappen Zee heading for Tarrytown if you look left just as you're reaching the other side, that's the GM plant right on the railway tracks. I don't know the one you mean north of the town.
The Arcadian Gardens you saw was just a garden store but in '63 they owned all of that land where there are now stores and it was filled with greenhouses.

Jean we are talking about the same plant, just going in different directions on the bridge it is North of the bridge whichever direction you are going. Sound like Ossining was better in the sixties. not surprising. If you have google earth just put in 226 beekman ave 10591 and the site of the old plant is quite visible just to the northwest you can also get a historical view as far back as 1994 and actually see the plant

JeanM did I used the word disenfranchised incorrectly somewhere I notice you posted onep 7 open thread the definition directed at me just was wondering why could be my mistake would love to know where it happenned
