Song To Woody

I'm out here a thousand miles from my home,
Walkin' a road other men have gone down.
I'm seein' your world of people and things,
Your paupers and peasants and princes and kings.

Hey, hey Woody Guthrie, I wrote you a song
'Bout a funny ol' world that's a-comin' along.
Seems sick an' it's hungry, it's tired an' it's torn,
It looks like it's a-dyin' an' it's hardly been born.

Hey, Woody Guthrie, but I know that you know
All the things that I'm a-sayin' an' a-many times more.
I'm a-singin' you the song, but I can't sing enough,
'Cause there's not many men that done the things that you've done.

Here's to Cisco an' Sonny an' Leadbelly too,
An' to all the good people that traveled with you.
Here's to the hearts and the hands of the men
That come with the dust and are gone with the wind.

I'm a-leaving' tomorrow, but I could leave today,
Somewhere down the road someday.
The very last thing that I'd want to do
Is to say I've been hittin' some hard travelin' too.

From the album titled "Bob Dylan". He was 21 years old.

"He not busy being born is busy dying." (1965)

Hi rozsie!
Thank you for posting the lyrics to the song!

I think in the main episode 6 thread someone asked what this song would have to do with the closing scene.

I'm just giving my opinion, but, to me the song is very relative to Don/Dick's life.
I also think maybe Don is starting to change his feelings about Gene Sr., and the promise of a new life in baby Gene.

I am always amazed that Matt Weiner, who is too young to have "been there", can find so many appropriate links to include in his writing.

In this case I feel the hobo link keeps repeating, if only subtly. Woody Guthrie road the rails..." all over this land". Bob Dylan walked in his footsteps and writes this homage to Woody. Here's a link to the great Woody, if you'd like to know more about him:

The Folk Scene was beginning to really bloom just about this time, too, along with the Civil Rights movement.

I agree with you 60s Child, about Don, but I feel he would be more inclined to accept the name if Betty had not just acted on her own. They could always call him Scott or Scotty.

Hi rozsie!
Thanks for the link! Thanks to your post I remembered that Woody Guthrie wrote "If I Had a Hammer". I know it was recorded many times, Peter Paul and Mary's version is most familiar to me.

.....Great link roszie.

Actually "If I Had a Hammer" was written by Pete Seeger and Lee Hays, way back in 1949 and recorded early on by the Weavers, but didn't really hit public consciousness until the early 60s with the PPM and Trini Lopez versions (1962 and 1963 respectively.)

Auburn Annie, you are correct. I saw a PBS special on Pete Seeger a few weeks ago and learned that he had cowritten that song. I had always thought it was a Bob Dylan work. Wish I had a quarter for every time I sang that in the 60s and 70s!

Thanks Auburn Annie!

Pete Seeger, I don't know why I got him mixed up with Woody Guthrie.

Thank you all...It's so nice to see some response to this post.

Back in the late 50s I saw Pete Seeger live at a very small concert. I have a book of songs he autographed for me. I watched that PBS special, too AA - he was celebrating his 90th birthday, I believe. Pete also wrote "Where Have All the Flowers Gone". Woody wrote "This Land is Your Land". Some great songs that are still sung today.
