Puff, the Magic Dragon
Just remembering Mary Travers of Peter, Paul and Mary, who died today. Beautiful voice, beautiful spirit.

I do love a song about marijuana...we sang it in camp and had NO idea what it was about!
I'm heartbroken over Mary Travers.
It is perhaps apt to remember, as we enter into the Summer of 1963 on MadMen, that in August of 1963, during MLK's march on Washington, P,P & M were there.
Voice of an angel....shivers down the spine listening to her and also Peter, Paul and Mary as a group. They sounded like three perfectly tuned cellos together. Heavenly.
Hi flowerpower!
Thank you for the post! I hope Mary has found peace!
I was fortunate enough to attend one of PP&Ms concerts a few years ago. What a delightful person she was, as you said, a beautiful voice and spirit.
Mary was walking with a cane, and had some coughing spells during the show. She said she had not been feeling too well lately.
I just heard a few weeks ago that Peter and Paul were touring, Mary was not joining them because she wasn't feeling up to it. And now she is gone.
Another voice of our generation gone...
It's so funny that you posted under "Puff". With all the wonderful songs they recorded, that one keeps running over and over in my head!
I keep thinking about the line when Puff was crying..."green scales fell like rain"
For the loss of Mary Travers now...
Hi Betty Crocker!
I think the double meaning of "Puff" is still being debated. If I remember Paul Stookey wrote the song, and swears it was not about smoking grass.
It reminds me of the Byrds "Eight Miles High", which was banned by some radio stations because some people thought it was about "getting high".
And, who can forget the Ed Sullivan/Doors controversy...
Jim Morrison was told the Doors could not sing the line "girl we couldn't get much higher" when they performed "Light My Fire" on the Ed Sullivan show. He agreed, and then did it anyway when they performed.
The Rolling Stones had to change the lyrics in "Let's Spend The Night Together" to Let's spend some time together on The Sullivan show.
It's hard to believe that type of censorship was tolerated by 2009 standards!
OK, I'm done...!
Well chasing the dragon,is about opium smokers so......
