Prediction: Sally's Gene Nightmares

Alright call me crazy, but here's my prediction: I think Sally will start "seeing" Grandpa Gene when Betty and the children are out and about, and will be taken to a child psychiatrist, until Betty realizes he's actually still alive and living in the city, a foil for Don's double identity. What do you think?

So who got embalmed and stuck in the casket? I'm pretty sure Betty and her brother would have noticed if that wasn't dear old Dad laid out in his best suit. Don sure would have...

Anything's possible, Andrea, but I really doubt Matthew is going that route.

Hi Zerelda - nice to see you again. As always, good insight!

Pleeeeeeeease!! No more Sally !!.....No more kids plotlines!! Enough!! Back to the real juice of the show: Don being badass at work, Pete being slimy, etc., etc,......

user-pic

Sorry! I just thought it might be interesting...

Hi medusa!

I miss the naughtiness too, but, I love Sally. I relate to her because we are close in age in 1963.

Hi zerelda and rozsie!
I agree with you both.

I remember Betty telling Sally's teacher that they decided not to let Sally go to the funeral services. Sally was never able to really say good-bye to Gene. Don seems to try to help her grieve, I doubt Betty has.
Sally "sees" grandpa Gene in Gene Jr.

Hi Andrea!
Please don't apologize!
You should read some of my "out there" theories!!

With MM, anything is possible!! And, look how many responses you have already!

Haha you're right 60'schild, I guess I just like thinking up strange situations for the Mad Men :) I'll undoubtedly have some more in the future!

user-pic

You know what Andrea, that's part of the fun of this Form!

And, we never know what the MM writers have in store for us! But, it is a great ride!

You may be right...who knows!

user-pic

Sorry Andrea, it's not going to happen. The MM writers are creative and skilled wordsmiths. Bringing back Gene would only work on daytime soap operas or a shower scene in Dallas.

You're crazy.

@medusa: You know I see your point, but I think the whole reason for so many Sally plotlines this season is to see how Don has totally disavowed his own raising and we can get inside the secrets in his head. Every time he relates to his kids, he has to reinvent himself to avoid becoming like his own abusive father while having to hide so much. For example, I think he can relate to Sally not wanting to bond with the baby because of his own experience when his little brother was born.
Betty, on the other hand, has a hard time emotionally getting away from a cold and critical mother and that falls over to her kids.
I know for myself, raising children has made me think about my own childhood at every stage. (Luckily, I had pretty normal parents).
My point is that through the kids we see more of what makes Don tick since no one else can draw him out quite as much as his children.

Great observation Jolie10. I find it remarkable how Don is able to emotionally connect with Sally on a level that Betty just avoids, yet he's purposefully emotionally disconnected with the rest of the world. For instance, Betty reached out to Sally in an attempt to help 'ease the loss' of Grandpa Gene by buying a doll and saying that it was a gift from her baby brother. I think that kind of freaked Sally out a bit more since Baby Gene is in fact, a baby. And Sally is aware that babies can't buy things. Betty always avoid digging deeper into issues and dealing with them on a mature level. Betty is always dismissive of Sally's feelings since "Sally is a child." She sees Sally as this annoying being, vying for attention, and is evidently bothered when Don attempts to figure out what's wrong with his daughter. I absolutely LOVED the last scene of the episode since it shows that Sally, like her father, connects with realism. Don took the time to hold both Sally and baby Gene and explained to her that the baby will grow and become his own person in his own way. In some way, she understood that and found solace.

Did anyone notice after Don placed the doll on her dresser (which was found in the bushes in front of the house), Sally woke up screaming? I thought Sally screamed because it freaked her out that the doll magically appeared sitting on her dresser staring at her after she had thrown it away (I was thinking of an old Twilight Zone episode). But when Don entered the room, it was a nightmare of Grandpa Gene she had. She didn't mention how the doll appeared in her room.
Does anyone think she saw the doll sitting on her dresser?

@DonDrapeMe: Sally originally screamed because she saw the doll on the dresser. She only screamed about Grampa Gene when Betty brought baby Gene into the room.

The first scream - "oh my God, how did that Barbie end up on my dresser"...

The second scream "Daddy make her take that ghostly baby Gene out of my room!!"
