Peggy You go girl
I know a large portion of the regulars here are Pegaholics. I would love to see her go. The dynamics are dynamic. oh I think I have a slogan. Anyhow I am not trying to get rid of her. The possibilities of it happening are intriguing. And she can always come back after Duck's scheme inevitably falls apart. Glad to see Duck back. He is such a silk covered , big dreaming, backstabbing sleazebag. All in the costume of extreme civility. So much like so many buisness people.Only taken to an extreme. Will Peggy come back, hat in hand. Will she come back to and get a raise? or after seeing Roger wave Good-bye Don will he leave and take Peggy and Pete and screw Duck again, mmmmmmcould be

Peggy lacks inner fiber. She gets her thoughts from whoever she last spoke with.
I would be very upset if Peggy leaves SC!
I hope she does leave SC. They have no respect for her because she started as a secretary. If she starts with the new firm as a copywriter and at a higher salary – good for her! She’s so much better than the other boys. Or maybe she will give her notice and they will finally realize her value and match the offer. (and maybe can someone else). Next week does look interesting!
Hi hobocode52!
I loooove your description of Duck!!! "silk covered, big dreaming, backstabbing sleazebag"!
I couldn't have said it better myself! I'm still fuming over what he did to Chauncey!
Do you think he is sober again? Or has he just found an agency that is more tolerant of his alcohol abuse?
Hi Pink63!
I'm just afraid MM will lose Peggy. I agree, she has to do what she has to do. I think she made that clear to Don.
If she leaves SC I hope her character will be followed at the other agency.
keep in mind the show must stay true to the time it is set in..peggy is like a child learning as she goes how to maneuver in this patriarchal environment..she is in many respects a trail blazer for women of her day and it isn't easy to make inroads...she actually has been very courageous so far in her journey, she seems to come up with the goods when she is confronted, be it breaking into the "men only" clubs or her unplanned pregnancy I think she will do what is right for her, and if is to go over to duck she will, but it will show cooper how much talent they stand to lose
As Roger Sterling said in another context in this episode, half this business is people saying "I don't like you!" (paraphrasing here.)
Peggy is a loner at SC, neither fish nor fowl. She tries to fit in but lacks the easy "hail fellow well met" ability that others have. She was left out of the group gift for the new baby so bought her own. She follows the rules and expects others to do so, hence in referencing the newly enacted Equal Pay Act she expects SC will get on board and pay her the same as other copywriters, especially as she performs as well or better than some of them. She sees herself as a copywriter; they see her as a girl who writes copy.
She doesn't entirely realize it but Peggy is a little ahead of her time, on the cusp of the new movement towards equality, though she'd say she simply expects to be paid fairly like everyone else, not comprehending that that is actually revolutionary, if not for the times, certainly for Sterling Cooper.
In order for Peggy to achieve her goals, she will have to leave S-C. In that era, just like today, you almost never rise above your worst day. To the S-C folks she will always be a secretary who got her job for all the wrong reasons, whether true or not.
Hmmm, well, with girls/women outperforming boys/men in all academic categories and being admitted to college and grad school at higher rates, I'm not sure poor Monty's view of the status quo is going to last much longer. The reign of the old white man is gone, thankfully and women and minorities are starting to take the reign as the men fall behind. We don't need or want to join the old musty men's clubs anymore b/c most of the young people seem them as old age homes for has-beens, not the social centers of the new/up and coming and powerful cultural, business and political leaders of today. We are starting our own clubs that women and men are clamoring to join.
Another reason it's so fun to watch the quaint outdated way things used to be from our modern and progressive present.
But we do owe this new reality to our Peggys of the past! You go girl is right!
I wholeheartedly agree with you Betty Crocker. While the gen Y'rs make me cringe with their work ethic, they are certainly head and shoulders above my generation in intelligence, creativity and diversity. I have confidence a better day is coming!
They'll get the work done--and if my stepson's graduating class is any indication, the girls now tend to be the hardest workers, more disciplined and responsible, while the boys, sometimes on their game, sometimes distracted (particularly by video games and sports), tended to need a bit more push.
But even his male friends are all in good schools, but the girls he knows are excelling at a higher level for sure. And the drop out rate is higher amongst the boys and the test levels starting to get lower.
The work ethic is different, if not as productive...it's too early to tell. Give em a few years maybe. I kind of remember hearing that same strain from my parents generation! And maybe we didn't have the same work ethic as them, it is true...
Monty III. THREE. I am furrowing my brow at you….because I don’t understand why you keep coming back trying to inflame posters. You are, of course, entitled to your opinion but I know eventually, if we ignore you, that you will inevitably say something horrible that will get you kicked off again. So go ahead. Give it your best shot. It will disappear just as you will at some point during this long day
Peggy is genuine woman of integrity. She has the gumption to put her best foot forward, but the wisdom not to get emotionally unbalanced when the chips are down. Now is the time for her to take an accounting of her abilities. With the promise of good fortune to be had by joining Duck, now is the time to play ball. I think we will see dynamic intervention in the near future from her.
I'm gonna trust Peggy's innate abilty to weigh the situation, take stock of her talent and keep her ammo dry for a bit... There's a lot about Duck that she doesn't know and she'll be wise to do a bit of leg work here before she makes a move.. If she's watching office polictics closely, she can not be unaware of the tension between Roger and Don... Neither of these two has the clout she needs . If she believes that the law that's on her side is something to hang her hat on, she's about to be sadly disappointed....
Don made her a jr copywriter on a whim. Her direct request for a office and it's presentation to her by Roger was done only as a mere amusement . It was 'ordained' to assert Roger's power and his decree has been accecpted by the minions but not warmly ... No matter...Done is done...
I insert these observations only to show that Peggy will always be 'the kid' and not taken as serious talent..SC is struggling but stalwart in their management style and would not hesitate to show her the door...
I wish she had an advisor or mentor to hash out all this.,.,.Anybody got Bobbie Barrett's # in a rolodex?
Whattodowhattodo???????
On a slightly unrelated note, did we ever find out what happened to that Germanic female researcher that appeared in the first episode about smoking...she was clearly one of the few non-secretarial females at work and though Don was clearly not a fan of hers, she did have a bit of an authoritative confidence in her work/opinions (which obviously put off Don, if not in manner, at least in substance).
Not exactly a rising star, granted, and likely an exception that proved the rule. But still, I wonder what happened to her.
Just some thoughts: there's another underlying dynamic going on with Peggy. Yes, she sort of lucked her way to a better position and her own office. But the fact is, that's where she is. And she's proving herself worthy.
When someone gets a promotion from within, the employees left behind tend to form some resentment, sometimes subtle, sometimes blatant. Peggy is sitting on a fence, so to speak. She wants to be "one of the girls" and be included when they do things like buying baby gifts. But the perception of "the girls" is that she is no longer part of their group.
The men in the office (Ken, Paul, Sal) don't consider her part of their group either. Their perception is that she didn't really earn her position as copywriter. The male ego is being eclipsed by a female's luck.
So, where does that leave Peggy? Pretty much on her own to figure out what to do next. She's flattered by Duck's offer, but has to wonder why Pete reacted so strongly. (The look of shock on the faces of both Pete and Peggy when Duck made his opening remark about their relationship, was great.)
John, I agree with your assessment of Peggy's character, but I hope she will have the good sense not to go with Duck. He's bad news!
Has anyone ever wondered what Bert Cooper's assessment of Peggy is? Has he ever mentioned her? My guess is as long as she does the business he's good with her. Maye she can make an ally of Bert. The Brits aren't going to last, Roger's almost as much a figurehead as Bert in their view, and Don's on his last nerve with them. Who else has juice - Alice?? She might side with Peggy just to annoy the guys, lol.
Hi Auburn!
well, this is only a guess...maybe Peggy came into his office one day with SHOES on!!! Horrors!!
Seriously, I think he only knows what Don or Roger may tell him. She's another worker bee at SC.
I was thinking about this whole British thing...here we are talking about race, gender, religious issues, and the British are being stereotyped as stuffy, non-humorous, cold fish wind bags. What till the Beatles get there!! That'll show 'em!
I thought it was interesting that they had Duck wind up at a real agency. It would be interesting if Peggy did go there and we had another agency on the show. If they did it would be an ENORMOUS coup for Grey. They could be the progressive agency in response to SC's conservative (with a small "c") ethic. If I were an exec at Grey I would be over the moon if we got the chance to do that. They would be the envy of all of Madison Ave. As long as they were shown in an overall flattering light. If MM can get real advertisers aboard, why not another ad agency?
Well if Darin could be wooed away from Tate-McMahon in one episode, why not Peggy
I doubt that Bert Cooper has the slightest idea that Peggy exists.. For as much as we love her, she is fairly insignificant, in the scheme of things.
SC is going through the takeover transition and it's not pretty but it was more unusual in the 60's.. I'm thinkin that many of us may have experienced it in the 90's and forward... The new company says "we love what you do and how you do it, we don't want to change anything, just keep on doin what you do so well"... 3mos later execs start clearing out, Sr officers and mid VPs having been golden parachuted out on day one... A few middle mgrs are held in place, the purpose being to keep a face of continuity until new comapny can make inroads and get solid footing w/ client base. The mid level folks who got along to get along congratulate thmslfs for their flexibilty and feel a bit of allegence. They take a breath and begin to believe that they have dodged the bullet. Then comes years 2 &3 when after several conferences, it's clear that it's just not a good fit for the changing biz model...Goodbye Harry Crane.....
I think Cooper must be aware of Peggy even if we've never seen them in a scene together. SC seems to have all of three! copywriters, and Peggy seems to be the most talented of the lot.
Re: Duck being a sleazebag. I disagree. Relating to trying to poach talent. That is done all the time. Duck would not be serving Grey well if he did NOT try to poach Peggy and Pete. It doesn't necessarily have to do with getting back at Don. You don't ask for a raise, you take a meeting with the competition. Then let your present employer know you've had an offer.
Duck was correct when he told Pete that he should be having lunches with other agencies twice a week. If Pete feels insecure in his position, he should be putting out feelers. Of course we can't have all these fictional characters leaving all the time. But in real life, in certain industries, if you are any good at your job, someone should be trying to poach you from where you currently reside.
Being a "pegaholic" I hope they explore this further in the next episode. I want to see her get equal pay with Paul.
Considering Peggy has definitely proven her value, it is just plain poor judgment on Don's part to not at least get the wheels rolling in favor of Peggy's raise. He thinks Sterling Cooper is the only game in town for her and he is going to discover that it isn't so.
He and Sal spent $140 on one short business trip and Don can't give Peggy hope of a raise? $5?
Equal pay may have been the law by then but employers (private at least) hid the discrepancies of pay rates.
I don't know that she necessarily has to leave the firm to get ahead as much as have Don take her more seriously--the rest will follow his lead, like they already do.
Nice that Duck sees Peggy's talent and skill and potential. Of course he chooses both Pete and Peggy because they are not "power" people and he feels he can persuade them to jump ship, but he still wants them because he knows their work. Nice that Duck is off the booze again. But I got to say, when he was soused and made that comment about Don and his ego I thought he was right-on. Bad timing and place for the delivery but he was right in that he pulled it all together and Don just goes missing without a word for the same three weeks. I guess Duck got canned and Don got 1/2 a million dollars. I can see the bitterness.
I want someone to take Peggy seriously and for her to do the right thing for her career. What happened to Olive?
Missed Joan this week.
I'll bet Bert Cooper knows exactly who Peggy is, even if they've never had a scene together. The fact that she's a junior copywriter, the first woman to hold that position, would have been mentioned to him.
Peggy's problem is that she's a pioneer, even if she doesn't realize it. There's no model for her to follow and now she's neither fish nor fowl. So she's very tentative about what she does. I thought it was smart when she followed Pete's lead and left Duck a moment after Pete did. Duck totally misjudged their relationship.
Olive will be back next week. She's one of the few listed in the credits for "Guy Walks Into An Advertising Agency." Who I'm really looking for is Freddy.
@Auburn Annie: You lookin' for Freddy? He's down at the bar.
Ritt 1,
Excellent point that "Duck totally misjudged their relationship"...
Perhaps that is a clear indication that to sign on with him is just not right regardless of all the right words and praises attached.
He is a very interesting character because he is so complex like two sides of a spinning coin; and part of me wants him to win and another part of me thinks he is his worst enemy and needs to hit bottom with his resentment and manipulations.
I think Duck is very perceptive. He may not have got Pete and Peggy's relationship exactly right, but at least he saw something, where everyone else was in the dark. Don took against Duck for no other reason than Duck is more progressive than Don. I know I keep banging on about this, but Weiner has pointed out that the top brass at SC is behind the times. Duck, Pete, and the copywriters are with the changing zeitgeist. Pete and Peggy would be better off at a more forward thinking shop. So would Paul. Of course Pete may not feel comfortable around people who like to "nosh."
If Don and Roger are still capturing clients it's becasue their client base is still very conservative.
Correct me if I missed something -- doesn't Duck just want to screw the ad company and a few choice people in it over by getting Peggy and Pete over to his place, rather than for their talent? He can see they aren't losers, so it would not hurt him to be doing it just for revenge, but I thought that was why.... and he sees that Peggy is vulnerable to it. Isn't that why he wanted to rip her clothes off with his teeth, rather than he thinks she's the hottest thing since Wonderbread?

I am a new member in this website indeed. I thought I could find there some information about Faye Reagan but no I see that there is no publications about this wonderful woman. Anyway this web looks great so I will definitely visit it one more time. Thanks a lot!
You bring up excellent points; maternal love is definitely not indexed to income.solar lighting,PVC windows A good mother is a mother who loves and cares for her child, full stop. I think everyone benefits if the father is also part of the picture
I don't know Tom. Maybe I'm not "old enough" to understand that a non-vote is a vote for the greater of two evils, but I lost any sort of hope floor jack in the system many years ago.
