Little Things to Love in Episode 7
Here, in no particular order, is my weekly list of things I loved in this episode:
1. That Christina Hendricks' name is still in the opening credits. It gives me great hope that our dear Joanie will return.
2. Betty, foreshadowing Peggy Lipton, Angie Dickinson, Charlie's Angels, and other great policewomen with her adminition to Bobby to "Freeze!"
3. Bobby Draper, for following his mother's instructions to hang up the phone a little too literally.
4. Swensen's Bakery. Loved the styrofoam wedding cakes in the window and the waitresses' outfits with the funky little hats. Though the cake box that was shown should have been white, tied with string, not pink.
5. Betty's ensemble in the Swensen's Bakery scene. The dress, the sunglasses and the white gloves were all perfect, but boy, it must have been awful to wear gloves on a sweltering July day.
6. Bert Cooper calling Conrad Hilton an eccentric.
7. The look that Don's secretary, Allison, gave Don, when he said to her "hold all my calls" when he went in to see Conrad Hilton. The look was like "duh, like I would ever interrupt your meeting with Conrad Hilton!"
8. Carlton's hat in the eclipse scene. It had some kind of feather in it. Also love Don's exchange with Carlton: "You stare at the sun?" "You run?"
9. The Greek chorus hovering outside Don's office and Don's "I told you not to let them hover" to Allison.
10. Duck's "have you been to Grey? It's a Penn Station toilet with venetian blinds."

Great post Helen! I agree wholeheartedly with #1. Joan, come back soon, please! I really missed not seeing Joan this episode.
One of my favorite little things from Episode 7 was when Don said to Connie, "How do you know I'm not late because I was spending time with my family reading the Bible?" Totally LOLed at that one.
That look from Allison re: Connie was great too. It was like saying, "Duh Don, I got it, I'm not Lois you know!"
My additions:
1. Don menacing Roger with his Zippo
2. Betty rattling Bluebeard's desk drawer
3. Cooper's Sacajawea analogy
4. The Draper kids fighting at the sink
5. The Sunbeam Bread truck outside the bakery
6. Betty mentioning that the bakery had air-conditioning
7. Pryce yelling "HUZZAH!" at Don
8. Seeing the eclipse in Don's sunglasses
9. Don dancing!
10. Don telling Archie to shut up
You all forgot the best of all: All those kids with cardboard boxes over their heads trying to see (but not see) the eclipse.
Great posts here!
Bert Cooper wants Don to sit-he doesn't... then proceeds to putting the screws to Don with his little speech then stands for emphasis with the contract; "Would you say I know something about you, Don?" (reference to season1) Bert
never mentions his umkempt state (same clothes, beard, bandaged face...)
Don doesn't mention the ornate, obtrusive piece of furniture Betty's lounging on. She didn't
ask his approval for that montrous change.
Ever notice when Don gets stern with Peggy she ends up in bed with a man?
"I'm your boss, not your boyfriend." (Pete)
"Save some tools in your toolbox" (man at bar)
"Get better, stop asking for things." (Duck)
Will she change her alligiance to Duck now?
Everybody wants something from him-this episode. His wings are being clipped, not as easy to come & go as he pleases.
Pete wants on Hilton acct
Peggy wants the best accts, like Hilton, is used to getting her way.
Upper management wants a contract after Don "swung his privates" in the meeting with Duck last season.
Conrad wants a contract, with more to come...
Don to be on time, a future with DON, faith-based scruples & accountability and with that, I assume..eventually no bar in his office and less drinking -Time will tell....
Roger misses the old Don + wants contract too
Betty wants to be a flirty daydreaming bitch.
Teacher is attracted to Don, and can be had
but wants him to be different from the typical men that hit on her.
The hitchhikers wanted his money.
Archie's ghost enjoys tormenting him.
How much of Don's life is his own anymore-freedom curtailed. How will be adapt, how will he find opportunites to break free?
maybe joan will work where Duck is
funny thing I don't find the teacher attractive at all and hate her voice
Re #6. Bert Cooper calling Conrad Hilton an eccentric. Bert is not as dotty as he would have people believe. After all, his name is also on the wall and it isn't by accident.
Betty wearing a party frock and sleeping on the fainting couch. Not the same outfit she wore with Henry or what she wore during the confrontation with Don the night before. As she "slept" her hands lightly caressing her belly and then going down each thigh...
The interior designer saying, "Please don't tell anyone I had anything to do with this." Unfortunately, the Draper residence doesn't have a parlor.
Pryce giggly as a schoolgirl about the Hilton account.
Daddy Dearest told a joke! It got a much bigger smile from Don than when Roger sang in blackface.
It's not much but Carlton all slimmed down and says he runs on a regular basis. Noticed but wasn't interested in Miss Farrell. Which makes one think his focus is somewhere else...
Miss Farrell talking about the drinking and philandering husbands she's encountered. Think about it... :-)
Roger saying to Don (re the Hilton account): "How did YOU get this account?" And Don's answer: "We travel in the same circles", to which Roger smirks.
I've always thought Roger suspected Don was hiding humble beginnings, and now it seems Bert knows a lot more than has been revealed, too.
Don polishing his shoes before work.
My dad used to polish all our family's shoes every Saturday night. It was a big ritual in those days before kids could wear sneakers to school.
Thirteen, you are right, the cardboard boxes were priceless. Did you notice that there was even an Old London Melba Toast box in honor of Betty's favorite snack?
"I've always thought Roger suspected Don was hiding humble beginnings, and now it seems Bert knows a lot more than has been revealed, too."
Mambo Deb, we know Bert knows Don isn't who he says he is. That was the big climax of the first season. He might have investagated to know more, but really, I think Bert was content with knowing that and knowing he had that ace in his pocket should he ever need it (the one he played this episode).
Bert seems the live-and-let-live sort so long as it's good for his business. He certainly pronounced his philosophy about Don's big secret in season when his response to learning that Don Draper wasn't Don Draper was "Who cares?"
He doesn't care. But that doesn't mean he won't make use of the information for the benefit of his company. And maybe for Don's benefit as well.
Three cheers for Three Martinis! Even if my limit is two, I have to love where you took us with that post. Your list of people wanting things from Don and the one explaining Peggy's encounters are both eye-opening AND fun!
fifty-two... I used to polish my dad's shoes every Sunday night... I think I got $0.50 for it.
And I agree that seeing the eclipse in Don's sunglasses was brilliant cinematography!
Both times Don got "dressed down" by Conrad for being late and without pictures of his family or bible, and when Bert got him to sign the contract, Don was on the opposite side of his desk. its all about control
The very end, when Bert Cooper unfolds the contract on Don's desk and says, "Would you say I know something about you, Don? Then sign. After all, when it comes down to it, who's really signing this contract anyway?"
Also, when Betty shows up at the bakery and Henry Francis apologizes for being alone. Betty quickly covers the fact that she, too, showed up alone for a meeting with a man by saying, "Well, actually, my friend couldn't get away either."
There are so many nuances in every episode, you really have to watch each one several times to really "get" them all.
