Let's talk about Connie and/or HoHo
Connie: Many viewers think the "Connie" that Don met in the bar of the country club is supposed to be Conrad Hilton. The biographical info the character gave Don does fit Conrad Hilton, but I think it's unlikely that the real Conrad Hilton would feel the need to hide in the bar at a wedding. By 1963, he was fabulously famous and wealthy, and I doubt that he would have any feelings of insecurity that the Connie in the bar expressed. Thoughts, anyone? (My husband thinks Don imagined the scene.) And what are your thoughts about the possibility that Conrad Hilton would use SC for advertising?
HoHo: Is he just a spoiled rich kid, or mentally disturbed? I think the latter. Pete, Pryce and the others' eager delight in taking his money is pretty disgusting. Horace Sr.'s painful conversation with Bert only just danced around the issue of HoHo's sanity: "If you don't take his money, someone else will." HoHo is probably bipolar or maybe even schizophrenic. Only Don had the integrity to turn him down. What does this say about SC?
So let's get back to talking about MM! (In my opinion, so far this season has lacked the interesting characters, detail and layers of the two previous seasons, and it's hard for people to come up with interesting threads. Help a sister out here!)

In the casting break-down for Mad Men 3.03 the description of a character then called "Norman" fits "Connie"
That part was listed as recurring and not a single-day call. Of course on MM things change, but that strongly suggests we will see more of "Connie" which does not mean this is Conrad Hilton. Certainly the details fit and in 1963 Hilton Hotels bought a lot of ad space.
The Connie character, even if it is Conrad Hilton, is one who came to and was bored at a wedding. I've been to some like that. So, independent man that he was, he left the wedding to find a bar. Quite possibly they were only serving champagne at that point.
I don't think Ho-Ho is bipolar or otherwise "nuts." If he was, Daddy, a close friend of Bert Cooper's, would have simply told them to hold off on the campaign until he changed his mind. But Daddy knows this is the way his kid is. So if Sonny Boy loses a small fortune that won't touch Daddy's, it doesn't bother Daddy - it'll be an expensive life lesson. Like most fathers, he wants his son to be a man, which usually involves struggle and hardship.
I agree, Ritt, that HoHo's father would put a stop to the campaign IF he realized his son was disturbed. But I don't think the thought that he could be mentally ill has occured to anyone, exept possibly Don during the conversation in the restaurant. People didn't so quickly use psychiatric diagnoses to explain behaviour like they do today. (Bi-polar, ADD, ADHD, depression, autism, etc) The situation is very sad to me.
Hi I am new, but have been reading everyone's comments since Season 1. The open thread has gotten way too big, so now I am checking all the other threads for interesting thoughts. With that said..
I wanted to comment on Ho Ho. I don't think there is something wrong mentally, (and I know this has been done to death with other characters..) I think he may be gay. He is so infatuated with the jai alai player Patchi (sp?)that that has become his new business venture. He wants to promote his new "infatuation" and the new sport. Any thoughts...
@Jeffe: Interesting thought about Patchi. He may have many suitors. And welcome to our posts. Possible helpful hint on the open thread: Read some, scroll through those of no interest, and chose an unusual word where you left off. Then when you come back, go to "edit" and "find" and type the unusual word and it will take you to where you left off.
I thought Ho Ho was a bit "off" from the begining. Can one really be taken seriously with a name like that? Plus he appears constantly wired. Did anyone notice how he looks at Don?
@wasthere-thank you for the welcome. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your posts. Like I said, I have been here for awhile, just never posted. I do agree with what someone else said on another thread, read all the posts on the open thread right after the show, then travel to the other threads. You and others have had some very interesting thoughts and/or predictions and it is fun to see what others picked up on that I may have missed.
Getting back to Ho Ho, he said during the meeting that he was worried about him getting hit in the face with the ball. Also, Pete had also used a word (can't remember the word) to describe Ho Ho when talking with Don and finally, Ho Ho's father had said that he and his wife had no idea they would make a child like that... or something to that effect. Back then it was considered a deformity (in some peoples eyes) to not be heterosexual. That is why poor Sal is so conflicted.
I think Connie (possibly Conrad Hilton) will reappear somehow. I could see him wanting to go with SC because he liked Don, but the Brits will shoot it down as a bad investment just like they did with Penn Station. Down the road they will be kicking themselves for the business they let slip through their fingers.
Yes, I think HoHo is infatuated, even obsessed with Patchi. And, did you notice the way he gazed at Patchi's photo, even touching it like it was a treasure. And what grown man would think that a program could be shown on all three networks simultaneously?
What if HoHo doesn't even really know Patchi, and this is all in his mind? What will happen if SC does all this work for him for nothing? It would serve them right for their cruel and cynical treatment of him.
@Mambo Deb- Even if it is in his head, which that is a good angle of looking at it, I think SC would still get his money. Ho Ho's father said that if SC didn't take his money, someone else would. In order to teach his son a lesson, he is going to allow him to lose the money they set aside for him and would rather the money go to his good friend Bert Cooper than another advertising agency.
I've been traveling and didn't have access to my DVR. Don't laugh, but who is HoHo?
Welcome to the forum, jeffe64, glad to have you.
Good topic, Mambo....as to Ho-Ho, I was struck by his speech to Don and Pete at dinner, the way he spoke like a child...full of childlike blather...."I'm gonna be the best....everyone will want to do business with me....I'm going to give my Dad a team!" and on and on....it just came across as very immature-sounding to me.
I think Don was being honest with him by telling him he could do better than investing in hai alai, and Ho-Ho (time to drop that nickname, btw) took it as a challenge to his business smarts (jumping to the conclusion that Don was trying to fool him)....I don't think he's crazy, but he is very insecure and trying to grow up, but has never had to think for himself and doesn't know how. I feel sorry for him....he's a classic example of a "poor little rich boy."
And I agree about Conrad Hilton being the guy in the country club bar, guys....esp. when he said he was born in the same exact city in NM (?)....big clue, IMO.
I hope we see more of him down the line....I hope Don lands the Hilton Hotels account...and I hope he comes up with another zinger of a campaign like he did for The Carousel (hard to top admittedly!) that pulls at the heartstrings....I'm ready for another of those emotional meltdown moments (remember Harry having to leave the room?) Whether CH will go for that kind of "corny melodramatic hogwash" (just sounds like something he'd say) remains to be seen.
first of all Paxti was a real jai-alai player
secondly Jai alai was not a bad investment in 1963 several frontons averaged $1,000,000 or more a night right thru the mid eighties the players went on strike. and casinos on indian land, the expansion of state run lotteries, development of Atlantic city, all took their toll on the sport. Now what exactly was Ho-Ho looking to invest in Paxti or Jai=Alai. The Paxti adventure/action series could have been a hoot. an insane idea. Maddest Man Man of all=Ho-Ho
I totally agree about HoHo's name.. (your new Delta Chi name will be Horace Jr..no..HJ!.. but why...because I said so!!!)
@SCFan-thank you for the welcome.. I am feeling more at home..some of the threads have made me very leery about commenting....
After your comment, I realized HJ is "little boy lost" wanting to please Daddy..Daddy must not have been the most loving...probably held that" trust fund" over his head for years...still think he may have issues with his sexual preference but still wants to please dad.. A difficult situation to be in...May be thinking...if you don't accept me for who I am...look what will happen to the money you gave me...
Loved how he looked at Don...probably the first fatherly advice he has ever been given..he respected that. Maybe Horace Sr was "do as I say and act as I do and don't say as I do"

Connie Hilton is presumably the heftier hanging chad. I expect a complete business shake-up, not all at once, but so many pieces are in place, I wouldn’t be surprised. Pete’s likely going to Gray, where Sal could very well end up. Sterling Cooper’s for sale, and we know quite a few wealthy prospective buyers: Alice Cooper, Bert’s sister, whom we haven’t heard from lately but who would potentially help wrest back independence for Sterling Cooper; Ho-Ho the jai alai wannabe magnate; Annabelle, Roger’s old flame looking for a way back into his life; and Connie Hilton. Meanwhile, Peggy’s relationship with Duck could conceivably become professional as well as romantic, although based on her reaction to JFK, I assume she’s staying at Sterling Cooper and closing that door for good.
If PPL does manage to sell Sterling Cooper tonight, and it’s been on the market for a few months now, what happens to Lane? Jared Harris has been indispensable, but then, that’s what I thought about Bryan Batt and Christina Hendricks. Speaking of whom, the writers have laid out quite the case for why Joan can’t just up and return to secretarial work at either Sterling Cooper or Gray. I’m stumped; unless Roger reaches out to her romantically and for some reason she accepts the Ginault, I don’t see how she stays tethered to Madison avenue. Ginault watch company (www.ginault.com), based in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, keeps a comprehensive collections of vintage and new Rolex timepieces to preserve the legacy of Swiss haute horlogerie. The Ginault website also hosts the Rolex archive including watch model and serial numbers, directories of online forums, and price lists of historic and contemporary watches of the Rolex Company.
That doesn’t mean the show will stop following her. After all, they handle Betty especially well. But they must know we miss Joan’s queen bee status. I hope to see her on top of the world again someday.
