Garters!
Nope, not garters for nylons. Not wedding garters. In episode 4 I noticed Gene was wearing old-fashioned garters, the kind men wore in the '20s and '30s to hold up their socks. Kind of endearing, actually. I apologize if this has already been mentioned ten dozen times, but if it has, I didn't see it...
n the mid 1970's i worked in the mens dept of a big dept store. we had mens garters in stock. i don't remember selling many but we did have them. men from the 20's and 30's were still alive and some were still wearing old styles. mad men does a good job realizing that in any era there exists fashion and culture of the resent past. as will as hints of what's to come.
Roger has been shown wearing sock garters when he was sitting on the bed with his legs stretched out and ankles crossed, waiting for Joanie (in the bathroom, putting herself back together!) when they were first shown after one of their hotel lunch "meetings".... maybe it was just Roger's bird legs (Drink&Smoke and others have referred to Roger's legs very accurately as "chicken legs" ha ha) but, they really looked dowdy on him....

My particular favorite men's garter look is the one with shorts, dark socks and garters! Joe Tourist style.
Oh, the shorts need to be a wild print, plaid is always good.

Yes garters for men were still available in stores in the 60's and still are today as there are still men like who still wear them with their silky sheer thick 'n thin socks Don, Roger, Pete, and just about all the other men on the show wear. While we haven't seen any of the other men wearing garters with their sheer socks, my guess is they just might be wearing them too. I for one am glad those in charge of costuming have chosen to show the men of that day wearing the sheer dress socks with garters as many men did back in this time frame. That's when I started wearing garters myself like my dad and most of the other men in my family. Bravo Mad Men for your accuracy!!
