August 1963
I heard two references to August in last Sunday's episode. Sally's teacher telling Don she is off for the month of August.
And Pete having a conversation with Paul, Ken and Harry about he likes "this time of year because it's so quiet". Just prior to the guys coming into his office, Pete was reading Ebony magazine.
I think the writers are getting us ready for the March on Washington coming up in August.
I can see Sally's teacher attending, and who knows...maybe Pete?

I screwed up my episodes!
The teacher scene was from episode 7, the Pete scene from the episode 8 preview.
After I watched it again (episode 8), I heard Pete say Don was in Dallas or Denver.
Could it be that Don will have a client in Dallas? And that his Dallas business will take him there in November? Hmmm....
If he has broken off all ties with Roger, he may not be attending Roger's daughter's wedding the weekend of Nov. 22nd.
I also wonder if they'll cover the Career Girls Murder, by somehow weaving it into Episode 8, by way of Peggy and her roommate....
Pete, in the sneak preview, does say how quiet Manhattan gets in August.
Wow 60's child. That is great insight. you just never know what will happen with this show. Do you think Matt Weiner reads these posts
Tell me about the Career Girls Murder
I think Pete will surprise us with his involvement in the civil rights movement.
This was the month that MLK made his speech in DC.
Wonder if Pete will read about it. I would be very surprised if Pete has any interest in the civil rights of anyone. I don't think he "gets it"
Who did they say was in Washington , DC?
August of '63, my family had just come back from Dad being stationed near London. He was beginning an assignment with DIA at the Pentagon. I was twelve, but I remember how much catching up my parents had to do that summer, both with visiting relatives out west, finding living accommodations, and reading the Washington papers. I was trying to blend into a new neighborhood, make new friends. I think the March was held without my realizing its importance until the following year. Not so the assassination in November.
Mercy. I'm not sure I want to go down the road Matt's steering us toward! Such turbulent, horrific times...
I guess I should try to find some positives to concentrate on while the blood runs in the streets. Good laws were passed, (though bad practices remained). Music was desperately wonderful. Some people had worthwhile dreams. Young men defended their nation courageously. Many good people fought for equality. A generation pushed for peace and truth. A nation was left bloodied but unbowed.
Hi rnpen!
Thanks, but my insights are all theories. Matt W. and crew always manages to suprise me!
I just found it interesting that Pete mentioned Don being in Dallas (or Denver) in the preview for episode 8.
Then I started thinking, if he starts traveling to Dallas regularly, and he probably won't be going to Roger's daughter's wedding, he could possibly be in Dallas the week on Nov. 22nd.
Who knows?
As far as Matt W. reading these posts...it's anyones' guess. Even if he does, Mad Men finished taping for this season.
Welcome if you are new!!
Good lord. Keep going, and soon Don will be the man on the grassy knoll... Or it will be the Draper film instead of the Zapruder film. That would be a little too Forrest Gump for my taste.
What I meant to say earlier, but was distracted by my flashback, is this--
I don't see anybody at Sterling Cooper having much to say about the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28th. It won't immediately affect business as usual in any significant way, unless they decide to reconsider pushing clients to market to "Negroes" after seeing those 300,000 peaceful marchers at the Lincoln Memorial. I don't see any of the white folks attending. Perhaps Paul will make a comment. Ken will probably make a joke in bad taste and get a few laughs. But Weiner will give us 21st century viewers a backward glance at the event which will have us all talking about it the next morning.
Hi dondraperesq.!
I would never go that far!
I was speculating that Don could be in Dallas on Fri. the 22nd, nothing more.
It may be a way to end the season, and the topic of JFK's death, since Matt W. stated he didn't want to spend a lot of time on it.
Hi fifty-two!
Maybe Pete will go to DC to take a survey. Who owns an Admiral TV, and who owns an RCA?!
Hi rnpen,
Here's the wikipedia on the Career Girls Murders:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Career_Girls_Murders
I thought Pete said "Cooper was in Dallas" ??
if I was going to lay odds, I'd say there's a better chance the Kitty Genovese murder getting some plot play, probably next season.
what this NYC sixties baby is hoping for with is a snippet of the Palisades Amusement Park jingle.
