Is it (was it) a real place?
Yes, it was probably supposed to be a very good alternative, although of course Dad didn't want to go.

For everyone's sake, he probably would do better there than at the Drapers' house of maudlin emotions and constant sorrows.

It appears there is a real Parker Home:

magda...all I recall being said about it was William mentioning it and Betty shooting him down with a remark that "those places" are for people without family...

I have a feeling that after a few weeks/months with Dad, she'll feel differently.

Yes, Parker House is indeed real and in New Brunswick, NJ which would have been exactly between the Philadelphia area and the Draper's home in Westchester, NY.

Parker House was founded in 1907 and in the mid 50's Robert Wood Johnson (of J&J) helped the non profit home for those ill and aged expand and helped modernize the facility. My husband who was born and raised in New Brunswick gasped at the reference.

Wonder the connection to writers - and what family member was a resident.

Parker Home is still caring for over 200 residents in the New Brunswick, Piscataway, Highland Park area and yes Dad would have been better cared for at Parker. Since Mad Men is historically accurate, the writers must have research and found very few nursing homes operating in 1963 and still around today. For over a century it has a staying power!
Will there be another "drama" with Dad at the Draper house? Maybe then he can go to get some rest and care - Parker Home is waiting...
