Has Mad Men Jumped the Shark?
I know Peggy's little Birdie song was supposed to be a poignant moment -- but it was all I could do to keep from bursting out laughing. Note to producers: yeah, we know she's a Broadway actress in real life, but note she's not in a musical. C'mon Matt, didn't you learn anything from the Sopranos and Uncle Junior's song debacle?
Other than this one gaffe the show continues to be excellent, so maybe we're not in Fonz territory just yet. Let's just hope we don't get any more unpleasant surprises.

Nice handle you have there. Makes me take your post seriously.
Not.
When I was a kid, I loved watching Bye Bye Birdie on TV. When I was a teen, my parents bought me the movie on this new thing called video tape.
Ann Margret's character is playing a TEEN. Peggy does not get that, I guess.
The show has not jumped the shark in my opinion. I think the writers are not to the point of being bored with the characters.
I hope we get a few more good years and end the story at the start of the 70's.

As I watched Peggy singing in the mirror, I too thought she better keep her day job. But then I starting thinking about the kind of snide face she was making, like she was thinking about how she was going to have to "dumb herself down" and play the helpless female to get ahead. Peggy's smart. I think she is going to take Joan's advice and stop dressing like a little girl and use her "talent" and wrap these guys around her finger. She's one to watch...
I think Peggy was just trying on the role for size and ulitmately concluding that it didn't fit. But she had to try it to find out, to see if she really could fit into that Ann Margret role. She was hardly alone.
I watched the movie in the year it came out and it made me want to find Sweet Apple, Ohio. I thought she was the sexiest thing I'd ever seen. Annette F. may have seemed like wholesome milk but Ann Margret would rot your teeth. And did you watch her in Tommy? Wow...
I think I must be the only person who thought Peggy singing in the mirror was funny. She seemed to be trying to make fun of Ann Margaret at the same time she was envious. I laughed out loud.
@I won't repeat your name: Peggy isn't supposed to have a great voice!
I loved Uncle Junior singing in the restaurant on a Sopranos episode. It reminded me of going to Ponte's restaurant in Tribeca, NYC where people with decent and some not so decent voices got up and sang love songs in Italian. Great place and great memories!!!
wasthere, I completely agree with your comment. I have never been to that restaurant, but I loved that scene with Uncle Junior and I thought the scene with Peggy singing was cute. I love that they're developing Peggy's character.
Yes! Mad Men jumped the shark last night with the whole foot getting chopped up and stuffed snake. This season is not nearly as compelling as the previous seasons.
