Harry's wife
Anyone else see what's going on with Harry's wife? I thought that was one of the more understated things going on this episode. She wants to go chat with Harry's co-workers, is she interested in taking on the role of Sterling Cooper wife like Betty, or is she just bored and happy to be out? Little bit of both? I don't know.
And the way she looks at Pete and Trudy. She's clearly jealous. And when everyone stops and lets those 2 have the floor, after Cosgrove says next time he needs to bring a date, she just leaves in this subtle but disappointed or frustrated jealous way.
Of course Harry being a guy doesn't catch it and continues to just stand there.
Anyway what was up with that? Trouble on the horizon for Harry or just one of those things?

I was troubled by the way that Betty and Trudy ignored Jennifer Crain. They don't consider her to be their social equal, and they repeatedly snubbed her and put her in "her place."
Jennifer had the best manners, however, of all three women. She tried her best to be a gracious party guest, mingling and making some polite small talk. But, Betty and Trudy rejected Jennifer and kept walking off together, arm-in-arm. In other words, Jennifer -- a former telephone operator with humble beginnings -- had better manners than the two charm school graduates/country club veterans. Snobbery is never considered to be good etiquette.
Trudy's snubs of Jennifer bothered me because last year at Paul's party Trudy was happy to see Jennifer Crain. But since Jennifer's had a baby, Trudy doesn't want to be around her anymore. Did you notice the looks that passed between Trudy and Pete when Jennifer and Betty were discussing their pregnancies and children? Very quick and subtle, but also very painful. Trudy snubbed Jennifer and whisked Betty away because she knew she could keep the conversation with Betty away from babies, etc. if Jennifer wasn't there; it's obvious pregnancy is not Betty's favorite topic. She told the stomach-touching guy she "never thinks about it."
Plus, how weird was that? No guy, ever, then or now, would touch a strange woman's stomach!
I hadn't given much thought to Jennifer being snubbed by Betty and Trudy, but that makes sense. Jennifer is a notch or two down on the "food chain", I guess. Still, stomping off during the dance seemed childish, but she'd probably had enough. Also, she is very ambitious for Harry to hurry up and keep climbing the ladder at SC....except that she's the one doing all the pushing. Harry is dead weight who should actually be replaced by Joan, IMO. Until her husband gains some status, Jennifer is stuck and envious.
I thought Harry was the equal of Pete as Head of Television. Remember how brusque Harry was with Pete at the division of the Accounts meeting? I wondered why when Harry and wife went over to the table with the Drapers and Campbells they didn't just sit down. The seats were not reserved. Since Harry had to be cajoled into going up to Don and Pete's table, I thought maybe he's just nervous to be around Don. Don seems to intimidate him.
Jennifer definitely wants her husband to be more like Pete, and there's going to be trouble because Harry is no Pete. He would have been much happier at the office smoking a joint then at this country club.
Jennifer, however, is rather like Don used to be, and like Jane come to that. She's had her nose pressed up against the glass, always looking in at the country club life seen at this party. She wants to belong to this life and this world. But it's not so easy to be welcomed in, especially when your husband is less than enthusiastic about helping you do that.
Jane, by contrast, has the right husband and has gotten in, but she's finding that she's in over her head. It's a lot harder to be part of this life than she imagined.
In the 60's TV was still a fledgeling media. Actually the whole media was looked down on. That is why so far Harry has no clout. You're right tho, Harry is no match for the others. Joan would be mucho better. Eventually they'll have to see how important TV is and put someone wutg Chutzpah in charge of it.
Harry was sleeping at the office, on the phone with Jennifer, asking that she allow him back home after he was naughty with one of the secretaries. He told her he was staying with Ken. Jennifer knows Ken makes a lot more money than Harry. She told Harry to ask for a raise, and he did but ended up with $225 a week compared to Ken's $300. Pete kisses up to Don so it makes sense his wife would kiss up to Don's wife.
I just did the day after re-watching, and there's a great shot of when Don and Betty show up at Roger's party. You deliberatley have quick focus on Jennifer and Harry walking toward them, with Jennifer beginning to smile. Then, they're completely head off by Pete and Trudy. These little subtleties are great.
I have not re-watched yet but if I remember correctly Betty and Trudy walked off arm in arm saying something about how they had each grown up in clubs just like that one. They both view themselves as upper class and have no interest in Jennifer.
First, Harry is a clueless jerk. He has very little social skills and no idea how to fit in with the country club set. Jennifer feels very out of place too. I think she got fed up when Pete and Trudy acted like the party was all for them! They cut a mean rug, though!
Second, Betty and Trudy did totally snub Jennifer. They didn’t even consider including her in the “tour” of the place
I'm beginning to wonder about Ken Cosgrove. He considers himself a ladies man, yet I haven't seen him with a woman or on a date (unless I missed that episode). Isn't it odd that Ken is the only character who's love life we know nothing about?
If I'm missing something, please fill me in.
chatty pattie, I always thought Ken was busy with his writing when he was not working, which would not leave much time for socializing. However, I'm beginning to wonder because last season Ken fixed up Roger with a call girl, so I'm wondering if Ken's writing is a cover something else.
He's the most undeveloped, story line wise, of "The Boys."
I can't help it but I thought Jennifer's hat was hideous, as was her dress. And Harry needs to lose those ridiculous little bow ties. These alone set Jen and Harry apart from the rest, IMO. Am I wrong? Was the hat actually fabulous or not?
I really felt for Harry and Jennifer. They wanted to fit in at the party and in that crowd, but don't. Jennifer has tried to boost her husband up in his career, as clueless as he is at times. He is socially awkward, and so was she at the party, and that may continue to hinder Harry in his career.
The Jennifer/Trudy thing is interesting to watch. Trudy has been friendly with Jennifer in the past, but is jealous that Jennifer has a child. Still, it was a shock at the party when Trudy cut Jennifer off at the pass She did not want to talk or hear talk of the painful subject of babies (I don't blame her) and buddied- up to Betty like they are old country club friends. It was a cold little switch of friendships there, and while I don't think Trudy did it to be mean but just for emotional survival, it was unfair to Jennifer. She tried to save face at the dance, only to be out-shined on the dance floor. I'm not sure if Jennifer stomped away after that because she was embarrassed that she was pushed aside twice OR if it really is about moving up in class and Jennifer cares more about Harry's position at SC than I thought .
So far, I don't really like Jennifer. I don't think she's satisfied or happy with her husband (Harry). For some reason her interaction with him always strikes me as pushing him, rather than encouraging him. At the end, when they went up to the Don & Co. table she had been talking Harry into it, and even said something to the effect of "You just come with. Leave the talking up to me." But then when that's exactly what he does, she got upset with him, and they just awkwardly stood there.
I do agree though, Jennifer did seem to go out of her way to exclude maybe not so much Jennifer, but rather baby talk, from the night. However, a good hostess ('scuse me Jane, put the booze down and mingle) introduces and mingles with the guests.
Now that I think about it, Jennifer and Harry should have befriended the newly friendless Roger and Jane. Time to get in while the gettin's good. :D
Yes, I think Jennifer wanted to be included, but has the wrong husband for that. Harry just can't get into the social flow.
Mambo Deb- when I was pregnant ( in 2003), I had plenty of random men want to touch my stomach. Weird, I know. And my people aren't even near being Nordic.
I had a ton of people touch my tummy when I was pregnant, around the second trimester with my second son, I started to get defensive.
I can really relate to Jennifer. Eerily so. My husband works at a computer repair shop. The owner's girlfriend snubs me sometimes and the one woman that works there means well, but we just don't have anything in common. When I go to events with my husband, I try to make neutral conversation, but since I'm not a sci-fi fan, and neither of the other women have kids, I quickly get left behind and I could burst into flame and nobody would notice. I feel like I'm less than, then I think less than...what? I think Jennifer needs to make some sort of social connection, possibly with Peggy? Maybe (and I know this sounds corny) send in a plate of cookies or something to make herself known. Yes, her husband is Head of Television, but I think most people still considered TV a fad at that point. I'm sure we'll see Jennifer come into her own as Harry's department grows. I think Jennifer's going to be the one that becomes a feminist in time.
