It was a tremendous scandal at the time. Rockfeller really took himself out of he running getting divorced in the first place. The first "divorced" Presidental candidate was Reagan. more than two decads later.

Rockefeller wanted to be President in the worst way. He was virtually "installed" by his brother David as NYS Governor, a powerbroker who wanted to smoothe the path for the Lower Manhattan business district he was building. David Rockefller's dream? A World Trade Center.

@madabouttheshow: Happy was not pregnant when they got married. They were married May 4, 1963 and she gave birth to their first child on May 30, 1964.

Nelson Rockefeller stands out in my mind for the marriage to Happy and the scandal it caused, as well as the Attica riot. He was Governor of NY and ordered the state cops and national guard to storm the place ultimately resulting in many deaths which the authorities then tried to blame on the inmates.

He really wanted the presidency and it's sweet justice that he didn't get it and also that when he was VP under Gerald Ford, he really didn't have anything to do and everyone knew it.
