Oh yeah, his "All I know is, I know her and you know him, and here we are, and there they are..." - I think my jaw dropped as much as Betty's did, because that sort of accusation had never been leveled at the Drapers before on the show.

I suppose the "you're garbage" comment does explore one of the principal themes of Seeason 1. As Don intimates to Midge in Episode 101 when he is asking for help with the Lucky campaign, they'll find out he's not that creative and he will be over. It is a metaphor for the era-illusion versus reality. Don/Dick is a dichotomy and he may believe he is secretly "garbage," but he did not physically attack Jimmy until the observation hit Don where he lives. Someone else's way of looking at Don, namely, his wife's. Most of us hated Jimmy not because he was an adversary of Don, but because Jimmy saw himself as equal to than Don. Philanderer or not, Don's our hero, and we will always find some redeeming virtue in him.
