"We have to get you a new daddy."

I am totally addicted to my Season 2 DVDs and have been watching them over and over again. I love it when I spot or hear something new.
So, when Bobby asks Don about his father and Don replies "he liked ham" I couldn't help but giggle during such a poignant scene.
Are you discovering any new gems? What are they?

When he mentioned the purple candies was he talking about Sen Sen?

Violet candies... I grew up with them at old fashioned news stands in the 70s and 80s, but they're hard to find now. When I lived in FL I came up here (western NY) and bought a whole bunch then wrote to the company to see if I could order them since no one there carried them. The company is "Choward's" but I don't remember where they're based. The letter they sent in reply smelled like violets.

And as far as tidbits, what I'm finding very surprising is just how much happens in each single episode. The amount of action is kind of mind boggling, yet it all works. There has been much talk of S3 being fast paced. I hope that isn't overdone, because it seems pretty fast paced now!

Pete's "University of Dour?" line, as I mentioned in another thread, is one of my favorite inconsequential lines. That's also the epi where Freddie whacks Peggy lightly with the folder and says "The work is done. Now write me some titillating copy" was something I forgot all about. Freddie let me down there...

MsFabulous - you can order them online through the Old Time Candy company (http://www.oldtimecandy.com/chowards.htm)
They have them in violet and also lemon, peppermint and spearmint, as well as scented gum.

485Madison, like you, I love it when I spot or hear something new....

But even the scenes I'm very familiar with I'll sometimes replay several times because they're so well done that watching them is like listening to a favorite song, symphony, etc.; it doesn't get old.

Re the "ham" reference--I'd missed that one, so thanks! (Was only aware of Glen's NOT liking ham).

What is Sen Sen?

Thank you for that link Annie! I like the lemon ones, too ;)

Sen Sen is old timey licorice (?) breath mints/candy.

I think that Old Time Candy Co. site AA posted about up there has them, as well as LOTS of stuff from our childhoods!

Looooove those wax lips and Charms candies!

www.victoryseeds.com/candystore/

(another old-timey candy link....wax mustaches!, etc.)

Not sure, but they might have the old Clove, Beemans and Teaberry gums, too....

Charms! Teaberry! I loved those. Wasn't there a vanilla gum? I grew up in the 70s and kind of watched all of that stuff disappear.

Ok... here's a possible gem... I'm watching Jet set, and the boy in the scene where Don and Joy are in the pool and Christian shows up with him sure looks a lot like the boy who plays Don in some of Don's childhood flashbacks. Now The Hobo Code was the previous season, so maybe that boy would look too much older by the time The Jet Set was filmed, but does anyone have access to the credits? My episodes are DVRed and the creds are cut off some of them. I don't know if they include names of extras, either.

The boy who played young Dick in Hobo Code looked like the same kid who played Christian's son in Jet Set to me, too, MsFab, wish there was a casting list somewhere....maybe it was the same boy and this was used to emphasize Don/Dick's impression of him (reminded him of himself at the same age).

There was also a Blackjack gum....licorice, I guess.

Absolutely loved the Clove gum. I think it was even marketed as a "digestive aid" at one time....or I could have it mixed up with Beemans on that.

Anyone remember candy cigarettes from the 1960s? They were shaped exactly like the real thing, but the manufacturer very considerately made them a bit smaller for little smokers' hands. No flavor, made of sugar candy, and they had red tips at the end. The pack very much resembled the real thing. Looking back, how ludicrous was this??!

Our state fair has a spot in the international pavilion (used to be in the Center of Progress building) where they sell old time candy in bulk. Most of what's been mentioned, and more, is available. It's pricey but what the heck, once a year. Google any of the items and you can find them on many similar sites. You can buy the Clove gum by the box (20 packs, $14.47) by Cadbury at CandyFavorites.com.

Definitely I remember candy cigarettes! I even bought some a year or so ago at the oldest store in my hometown that the city has bought and renovated. It sells old-fashioned products of all kind. I also bought Boston Baked Beans (the candy) and Nekko wafers and went on a sugar high.

Remember the candy "lipstick"....absolutely horrible...even then!

Slowpokes suckers were yummy...esp. the chocolate coated ones called Black Cows.

Banana bikes were yummy, too. I recall an ice cream called Sidewalk Sundae that had a vanilla core with fudgy goop next and a thin chocolate coating....wonderful...
