Therapy with Dr. Wayne

I hope all of you have had as productive an off-season as I have had. My premature withdrawal from the blog did have some unexpected benefits such as higher productivity at work (and thereby keeping my job) and more time to focus on my self-improvement. Dr. Arnold Wayne and I have done some intensive therapy work in the off season. This, and the electroshock treatments have really altered my view of life and I have a whole new attitude. I am happy to share my personal affairs with you, my trusted confidants.

As is his practice, Dr. Wayne has told Don all about our sessions. I am sure if I had anything to worry about, Don would intervene because who would know better about living an enlightened life than Mr. Madison Avenue himself, Dick Whitman.

While Dr. Wayne has made sure my mind is healthy, Dr. Greg Harris is making sure my body is sound too. He has me on a diet and a regular exercise regimen. Unfortunately, his bedside manner is a bit disturbing, to say the least. He makes me nervous when we are alone in his examination room, especially when he says, "I'll make you healthy whether you like it or not. This is what you want, don't you?" I have a prostate exam coming up and I must admit to a bit of trepidation.

As part of my rehabilitation, the good Dr. Wayne has encouraged me to continue writing. Under his care, I think my writing has really improved. I've provided a sample below:

Ok, ok....so you want some attention.... I'm readying a bucket of minnows to throw at you to naw on...they ain't so fresh, cause they've already been nawwed on and regurgitated a few times by us neighborhood cats and kitteys....

But in the hopes of "calming you" (before some of those nurses you tangled with before come in to "quiet you down")....I joke! Honest! PLEASE no offense!... (... And come in, come in....you know you HAVE TO! ...( Us grave-yard shift workers can't deal with the "busy-ness" of the day shift...I'm almost ready to go home, as it's 4:00 a.m., and I need my rest)!

Anyway back to OT-- (my OT...since you presented a blank slate here PB):

You may take your pick of any, all or none of these to chew on: (The first one I offer in the spririt of "Enough About You, What Do You Think
About Me ---and I'm sure Dr Wayne impressed upon you the importance of adhering to the cultural rules of the playground, and as you know that's one of them).

What did you think of my theory that little Sally--
(left in Joan's good charge that Easter Sunday that Don took her into the office)----wanted to explore all the office amenities, (She's a precocious child) and in so doing, came across one of those open liquor/wine bottles lying around...and got herself so relaxed, happy and giggley...that she needed "no watching" at all, and was serenely "passed out" when Don lifted her up from the office couch and carried her home.

Or, if you prefer to delve into the "fresh stuff" --actually these minnows are still un-thawed from the freezer, but they do have little "teeth marks" on them, as though some have been trying to consume them anyway: Under the title of: SPECULATION:

Do you think that we'll just get only ALLUSIONS to JFK's assissination --the time line having past November 1963? (That's my HO, because given the number of minutes on the show taken up with Marilyn Monroe's death ...(and they were well-done minutes, I might add)....but POINT BEING: at least a whole episode (comparitively speaking) would have to be devoted to JFK. And MW's already said (and I agree) that he doesn't want to do that...(Almost too big a topic to handle in "real time" -- best dealt with retrospectively).

Thirdly, on reading one of your old posts you mentioned MLK's "I Have A Dream" Speech" as an event that happened in 1964, Do you think the
folks at SC are going to "scrambe" to try to sign MLK on so THEY can claim credit for his future speeches?. (Please know I'm kidding here, and in no way do I mean dis-respect for MLK -- but I've learned the hard way that my "kidding remarks" are sometimes not taken that way). ACTUALLY, I think that Dr. King and his leadership and the Civil Rights Act of l964 are major historical and signigicant events of the 60's and will be important "scene settings" in future episodes. Along with the Viet Nam War, of course -- which seems to be another topic that I haven't seen very much speculation on in the "frozen food section."

Finally, to be filed under GOSSIP, I'm curious as to whether Dr. Greg attempted to elict from you (in his respectable-appearing manner) any names, phone numbers, details, etc. of your past experience with "the girls." We know he's a sly one, and I think he's nursing a guilty conscience, and he just can't keep it in a box in a closet at home.

(On a proof-read, I think it best if you skip answering the above Gossip question -- just take it as a rhetorical question, please...I think topics of such a "smarmy nature" are best kept off the boards, as they get us into trouble)!

P.S. You know, this us a departure from my "usual style/manner" -- my usual being pedantic, long (well those 2 are still here), heavy and probably boring. But I depart here, in the interest of "welcoming you back on board)...and hoping that the "hatchett can be buried" on all sides from whatever mis-understandings that occurred between posters in the past. I, for one, read your final "MEA CULPEA" post, and IMO it was sincere, thoughtfully written, and gracious. Anyone who could/can not accept that isn't IMO honoring MM. Many of us have made mistakes and need to learn and perhaps work on ourselves.

ISN'T IT NEAT THAT WE CAN DO SO ON THIS FORUM, and have the benefit of inter-acting and learning about our short-comings in anonymity -- beyond the eyes/ears of our "real life" friends/acquitances ....where our reputations could TRULY be damaged? That is just a thought I recently had....and let's all keep that in mind...this forum is a gift to us from AMC...and we should be mindful of that...(Oh, and "preachey" should also be added to my list of style characteristis).

Maybe I should just delete this post....thinking...
flipping a coin...oops...pressed the wrong button.....Sorry

Corrections: I think I mis-reference the "I Have A
Dream," (MLK) speech -- wrong year and wrong poster. The speech was made in '63, not '64...according to the post. (Also, among many other mis-spellings above, I'll correct "scrambe" to "scramble").

(Although "scrambe" sounds like a perfectly good word in it's own right -- it just needs a definition. :)

j_m: I would like to make something clear: my posts target two audiences – 1. the regular “Maddicts” and 2. the others who I know that never post but “lurk”. I do appreciate the comments and criticism of the regulars here on the Mad Men site; however, I have converted many of my fellow co-workers, friends and family into fans of the show. None of them post but many surreptitiously check out my B.S. on this site. My writing, from this point forward, may appear to target specific Maddicts even though it is originally inspired by friends and co-workers.

Answers to your questions:

Sally Draper – I think the trajectory of her story line will be:
a. She will inherit her mother’s good looks and her father’s libido.
b. She will drop out of college and attend Woodstock in 1969.
c. She will move to the West Coast and tour with David Bowie during the Ziggy Stardust tour.
d. She will tire of the Left Coast and move back to NYC in the mid-70’s.
e. She will be a regular at Studio 54.
f. She will become the manager of CBGB’s in 1979.
g. After her parents pass away, she will befriend an older woman who will take her under her wing and teach her everything she needs to know about the entertainment business.
h. She beats alcoholism.
i. She becomes the president of Sony Entertainment where she discovers and signs Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and P-Diddy.

JFK – Matt Weiner has said he will not address it directly. I would love to see Roger say something absolutely callous/insensitive about the only Irish Catholic president. It would shock the audience to be reminded that it wasn’t just Blacks, Hispanics and Asians who weren’t invited to the party.

MLK – My old post was “Past is Prologue: 1964/2008”:
http://blogs.amctv.com/mad-men/talk/2008/11/past-is-prologu.php
The speech was in 1963 and he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

Dr. Greg Harris – I’ll leave that one alone.

Lastly, if I want to go over my short-comings, all I have to do is call my ex-wife. Because my friends, family and co-workers know my true identity, I am writing none of this anonymously (well, at least to the people I most care about). This will not stop me from pointing out the absurd or the foibles of the human condition.

To avoid any new “mea culpas”, I will avoid directing my humor at specific people. In addition, I will limit my own comments on topics I write. I have learned my lesson re: staying on topic so consider my topics a free fire zone. No more policing from the PB.

Polar Bear: You are something else! What an enjoyable read! I can't help but assume that if MLK were alive and still preaching/leading today, he'd have a publicist, PR guy, and a manager - all staffed by SC! :)

Did anyone watch "Cronkite Remembers" -- JFK will be dreamily remembered throughout history as the hero and martyr, although his faults and foibles were many. Cronkite explained that his arrogance was over the top, he was adept at bending the rules to suit himself, and it bothered Cronkite greatly.

Reading your first post in this thread, Polar,
it just occured to me that Jack Nicholson has played at least two crazy men in movies:

Randle P. McMurphy in One Flew Over....

and Jack Torrance in The Shining....

I can't think of any others where he was nuts, but he did get his head bashed in (should have kept that football helmet on, Jack!) in Easy Rider.

Any other movies besides those where he was nuts/disturbed/psycho in?

Just a few rambling thoughts...

And, no, technically he was not crazy in One Flew Over...until they lobotomized him....but, the effect turned out to be the same, I guess...nobody home upstairs and all.....

..answering my own question....Melvin Udall in As Good As It Gets....although he could be just thought of as eccentric...extremely so. Jack is good at portraying nuts...maybe it's not all just acting!

I loved the scene in that movie where the little dog started to mimic Melvin and skipped over all the cracks in the sidewalk...ha ha

Is it August 16 yet????

sigh
