Season 3 Video With Comments from Matt W. and Cast

I am wondering about the set where Christina is shown sitting on the couch. She is wearing a green dress. There is greenish colored phone on the end table and a round white wood coffee table with a glass insert in the middle. Does this set look familar to anyone? I don't recall it, but that means nothing, as my memory is like Swiss cheese, it has so many holes in it.

Very interesting video, with lots of teases. I can hardly wait for the singing and dancing promised by Vincent K. Wait, was he joking? 'Cause I could totally see Roger in his boxers and sock garters doing the Can-Can with a couple of twins. (The movie "Can-Can" came out in 1960, and Harry Crane mentions plans to "buy tickets" to this film, which played a reserved-seat roadshow engagement in New York City.)

LOL, Z. I think the singing and dancing bit was a joke, although I'd pay good coin to see the scene you described with Roger.

user-pic

I think that might be Joan's apartment she is in.

user-pic

It might be Joan's apartment, but I'm not sure because I don't recall seeing that large a couch in her apartment. (I seem to recall a smaller couch or love-seat from the episode where she and her roommate brought home the dates they picked up).

There are red walls, and sheers and green-print curtins at the two windows, so I don't think it would be anyone's office (although I did think about offices with couchs -- Roger's and Don's.

The others' were pretty easy to recognize: Don's in his office; Peggy"s behind her desk -- (ready to work, I guess) --in her office; Pete is in (his?) office;
Betty's sitting on the bed in her bedroom; Paul, Ken and Harry are hanging out -- who knows where -- but it looks to be right outside of their office building perhaps.

Z, in which set do you think Matt Weiner is sitting? There are red (Satin)? drapes and white sheers at window, and what looks to be "home bar" behind him. What are those almost soda fountain-looking things sitting on the "bar" (not sure it IS a bar) behind him?

user-pic

Which video are you all talking about? I guess I'm not smart enough to navigate the site, cause I can't find it! Can you post a link or tell me where it is? Arrgh!

Jackie, without having seen the video, the set with Matt Weiner you describe sounds like the Draper living room. There are big bottles of liquor with those pouring things on top sitting on the bar (or stereo, perhaps) in front of the window.

Mambo Deb, if you go to the Blog, it is the 3rd article down. Has a picture of Don next to it and in the accompanying article, Vincent K. jokes that Season 3 is just like Mad Men, but better. There is a video with the article that has several of the cast along with Matt W. commenting on what to expect from Season 3.

Jackie, I also thought Matt W. was sitting in the Draper living room set. I am thinking those are liquor bottles on a credenza or bar cabinet - they seem to have silver stoppers of some sort in them.

user-pic

Mambo, here is my attempt to provide the link to the video:
http://www.amctv.com/videos/mad-men/?bcpid=8803972001&bclid=29713005001&bctid=29428616001

Or, maybe you're already found it...hope so. (You have to "wait" for the Clorox commercial "to be over" (story of our lives, right)?...then the video z is referring to begins.

Thanks for your take (before even seeing the video!) on the "Matt setting." What a memory and eye for detail you have. Thx also to z.

janeeyre: I just had an idea from your original identification of Joan's setting...(which I wasn't disagreeing with, btw,...just scatching my head over).... and I'd like to hear more of your input on this:

Do you think it's possible that Jane has a NEW livingroom? (Again, I'm not certain at all, that this is NOT her old livingroom...I haven't noticed the interior design details very much ...that will be another whole re-viewing for me). :)

user-pic

.....Joan's apartment in Season 1 is not the same apartment as Season 2.

It does look like a home sofa she is sitting on, though, not an office.

Matt is sitting on the Draper's living room couch.

user-pic

z...yes, Vincent K was really funny in this video:

A:..."It's like Mad Men. Wait, it IS Madmen...."

I doubt that was "scripted" for him, as I've read that he is naturally funny...keeps everybody in stitches. (Which is so opposite has personality on the show...what an actor).

(Sigh)...and to be funny too...(as in "...wait, was he joking?"). Bet Vincent would get a chuckle himself if he were to read that.

user-pic

Dry, I didn't know that. Ok, so she changed apartments from Season 1--and was that the Season where she was still schleping home pick-ups from Bars? (Don't get me wrong...Joan's one of my favorites....if not THE favorite person on the show for me...that comment is something like I would say (kidding her) to her face)....

Anyway, back on point: Did we get to see anything of her apartment in Season 2 other than (I believe) the scene where she's fetching water for her lord and master as they eat pizza at her (diningroom?) table? Oh, and besides the bed scene where she's performing other functions for him? I believe you that she has a different apartment in Season 2 than she had in Season 1. I'm just trying to remember how much of the Season 2 apartment we may have seen.

P.S. If she has new "diggs" yet again in S3, is it because of a promotion at SC, or a "demotion" to rapist/doctor's wife?

user-pic

Considering some of the songs performed in the movie "Can-Can", it would be perfect for a little re-enactment by the SC staff. Who should sing the following and to whom:

"C'est Magnifique"

"Live and Let Live"

"You Do Something to Me"

"Let's Do It"

"It's All Right With Me"

"Just One of Those Things"

"Come Along With Me"

user-pic

Thanks, everybody, I found the video using Jackie's link.

I think Joan is sitting in the living room she shares with Dr. Rapist. It may actually be his apartment, and she may just "visit" a lot, keeping her old apartment, where her roommate stays alone most of the time. Unmarried couples didn't really openly co-habitate like they do now.

user-pic

Man, that Vinnie K. what a jokester! Actually, he is funny...I bet he'd be fun on the set. Probably is a very light-hearted and fun set, with all of those folk...they all seem to have a fantastic sense of humor.

Z, I imagine that new set we see behind Joanie is the Dr.'s apt....just guessing, of course, like we have to at this point.

And, I would love to see Roger and the twins in that scene you envisioned, too! Weeeeeeeee....the sock garters would be just the perfect touch, for sure....with some nice big-red-hearts-printed boxers!

user-pic

.....I think Mambo maybe could be right, and the reason is my hunch about the turqoise phone. You wouldn't find that in an office, I don't think, next to a sofa, necessarily, so it seems like it has to be someone's living room.

Joan's living room in Season 2 (check out the scene with her and the doctor having dinner) was very much color-coordinated to her red-head complimentary colors. The walls, and accessories and furniture. It was beautiful, really, to see her walking around in the room.

(It was also good to see her looking so well in the video, and not sporting any scars.)

If she is married to the doctor in Season 3, just a wild guess, but chances are she isn't going to have quite that much autonomy in decorating as a single woman would, and would be more likely to tailor the new place to a more masculine, neutral, company-friendly space for entertaining Greg's professional associates.

Beside that, though, I could picture Dan Bishop and his crew not wanting to completely abandon traces of Joan's personality from the new house. That turquoise phone just seemed like something Joan might have.

(Or not, but we'll find out eventually.)

jackie, well I wouldn't be surprised that Joan got a new apartment and ditched Closeted Carol. That can't have been a comfortable situation after Carol's love confession!

(No offense to any non-heteros out there.....)

I'm very curious if Joan is married, what her take on motherhood will be.

Based on this video, she appears to be wearing a business dress, so she must still be working.

Will she sneak her birth control pills like teen-aged Erica did, a million years ago on All My Children, against her chauvinistic doctor-husband's wishes?

user-pic

Z....

Endless possibilites with your song question...Trying to run through a few in my head and finding out I don't know the complete lyrics to a single one....it's UTube time....

(At first I thought #2 on your list was the Bond theme "Live and Let Die."..... (Not really, but it sets up my answer: Dick Whitman to Don Draper --back many moons ago over in Korea).

user-pic

Dry...

Good point...I forgot to" wonder about" what happened to poor "Closeted Carol." Like you said,
Joan probably moved out--perhaps getting a "better" apartment. Goodness knows, she couldn't have asked "poor" Carol to move, as Carol
had money woes (having just lost her job) -- and that would have been another blow coming on top of her unrequited feelings for Joan....But then again, I'm thinking Carol had mentioned to Joan that bleak day in the office when she came crying about the loss of her job -- that she might have to "move back home" or ask her Dad for money (something along those lines, I think).

(I don't suppose we'll ever see Carol again -- but then again, maybe we will...we don't have any other gay female "regular" that we know of on the show yet). Not that I'm advocating that every group has to be "represented." Oh, never mind...
I should not digress so! (Sorry).

Agree with you that the "business dress" is a good clue -- and then there's that pen she wears around her neck -- unless she uses...oh, again, never mind. (As SC might say).

Motherhood and Joan: my opinion only, but I didn't think she appeared to "take" to children--just my recollection of her lack of glee when Don brought Sally to the office that Easter Sunday and left her in Joan's charge. The second time I watched that episode, I was conviced that Sally was "drunk" -- not merely asleep -- when Don had to lift her off the office couch and carry her home. I admit I'm exaggerating with the word "drunk," but there was an empty glass (and maybe wine bottle I think) in her proximity. Just a theory, and I 'm not saying I totally believe it myself.

One last word from me on Joan and children: I wouldn't be totally surprised if she doesn't ever find the right time to have any -- there wasn't quite the attitude toward having children back then as there is today. Some women, I think, were more focused on (for the first time in history) having a shot at a career in professions heretofore closed to them. JMO. (And sorry to go off on such a long tangent).

.....Joan's eggshell-colored satin sheets, in the bedroom scenes with the doctor, struck me as very "Joan," and possibly even a little racy for the time?

Not qualified to comment on that one.....was that something "regular" people did back then?

Still can't believe the doctor expects that her "hillsides" made it a whole 32 years without being "roamed," but if I were her, knowing that, I think I might have put gingham or cotton eyelet sheets on the bed!

user-pic

The doctor, I think, doesn't have both oars in the water. I loved Roger's question to Joan, on hearing the doctor's age --"What's wrong with him?"

(I'm sure Roger meant a more "mundane" failing --like maybe he still has his adolescent acne -- but not rape).

user-pic

.....What if the big shocker in Episode 1 is that Roger married Joan.

That's a little out there, but they did say we would be shocked right away, probably by more than one surprise.

user-pic

.....z.....Way OT, but isn't this the weekend you have your grandson? The visual of you chasing him all over still sticks in my head.

user-pic

Wow, Dry, that would be some shocker alright...but, I'd love it!

user-pic

Hi Dry and SCfan!
I'm with you...I would love to see Joan and Roger married.
They seem to belong together. That skeeve MD she is engaged to has to go!!
I watched Season one again, and the scene with Joan and Roger when she is applying makeup to him still almost made me cry. I think she really was hoping he would say he loved her.

What do you think happens to Freddy? I wonder if and when he will be back....

user-pic

While we're still talking "Joan," I guffawed over "theotherjoanholloway"'s comment on the blog
"What Questions Do You Have for the Men of Sterling Cooper?"

That "Joan" sure does have a devilishly funny
sense of humor....

@60'schild: I hope Freddy comes back, having gone through "rehab" at that Pennsyvania facility Roger mentioned, and becomes a "force to be reckoned with," with renewed creative energy and insight. I also hope his "almost thirty, unmarried daughter" has found a good man, so he won't have THAT worry on his mind.

user-pic

I think Roger's question "What's wrong with him?" meant "He's in his 30's and he's not married? What's wrong with him?" Maybe because he's an abuser?

60s child, you jogged my memory with the makeup comment. I think Joan was shocked and irreparably hurt to her core when Roger said "You're the greatest piece of ass I've ever had" while she was putting the makeup on him. He was the love of her life, and all she was to him was a piece of ass? As a result, I think Joan is done with Roger. (You could actually see the light bulb go off in her head.) He MIGHT get her back, but he would have to jump through some major hoops to prove his love.

user-pic

Mambo, I agree with you that Joan was shocked on hearing that remark from Roger...coming at the time that it did...he had just faced down death, and here she was being perhaps the "tenderest" she had ever been with him... (i.e. "tenderly applying her own make-up to help him "get back up on his horse and ride out" and face those clients). He'd said many similar, jokingly- ribbing comments to her before in a sassy, flirty kind of way...as had she to him. That's the way they inter-acted.

But the circumstances (and timing?) is what was so different here....because it was like Roger was saying goodbye to her --as well as summing up their relationship in that one line...and maybe it was the "goodbye" part that hit Joan so hard.....

But IMO, it was really Roger's highest form of praise...given the way they (he and Joan) have always inter-acted. They both have a somewhat "cynically sarcastic" -- (or shall we call it 'realistic')-- view of the world, which they express through their humor with each other.

I think Roger's not the type to keep up the "starry-eyed" romantic, devoted kind of "love" he's been caught up in with Jane. It would ultimately feel too "unnatural" to him and would be too exhausting.

But again, I agree with you that Joan was very hurt in that moment. (I guess "timing" really is (almost) everything.") JMO

.....Hi 60schild.....Great to see you! I thought you'd be coming along any day now - welcome back!

user-pic

.....Re: Roger and Joan, I said that, but the ring she is wearing in the photo with the cinnamon-colored dress looks like the same ring - can't tell if there is a wedding band paired with it.

But saying that, it's not necessarily conclusive - doesn't just about every engagement ring look a lot like that?

user-pic

Hidey back atcha, 60'schild....always love that little "Peanuts" av....so cute.

I also hope Freddie comes back. We have been told as much in some of the info during these long off-season months (forget where I read it, but I feel sure I did)....I, too, hope he shows 'em what for and regains his position and confidence at SC. I also hope he comes back with a whole new repertoire of zipper compositions. heeeee

And jackie, I, too, think Roger's comment to Joan was made in a complimentary way (from his end of things, anyway)...he was misguided in his thinking that she would take it like he meant it, however.... I agree, 60's, I think she wanted to hear that he loved her....and THEN that she was a terrific poa....JMO.

user-pic

Hi Dry and SCfan!!

I am humbled by your re-welcomes! And, I am so happy to be back!! Is it August 16th yet? I am looking forward to talking to you both!

user-pic

.....I'm just glad you are back.

You have always been so happy, agenda-free, and nice to everyone, no matter what.

user-pic

I echo Dry's post, 60's....so true.
