Matt Weiner GQ Interview

Took a gander over to Basket of Kisses this evening, and thought the people here would like to read this, too.

Exclusive Matt Weiner scoop juice from GQ!

We were lucky enough to get this awesome Matt Weiner interview-ette from GQ.com a day ahead of schedule (thank you, lovely sourceperson!).

These are all Matt Weiner quotes:

"Roger's love for Jane put the company in play, and Roger used Don as an excuse to get out of his marriage. Don thought the whole thing was a betrayal. So they have issues to work out."

"Time has passed. I won't say how much, but the guys are definitely at different points in their lives."

"I fought AMC cutting two minutes of the show. I love advertising. I write about advertising. I am an advocate of AMC making money. But an extra ad is a very limited financial reward for altering a show that put AMC on the map. Also, you are fighting the TiVo! Why give people less show?"

"The Cuban Missile Crisis created a situation where the characters could die tomorrow. Of course, some of them - like Betty - don't even notice and just want to deal with their own problems."

"This season will be thematically different than what we've done before, but it's the same people in the same world. Pete is there. Peggy is there. I want people who love the show to say, 'Oh, my gosh, I'm so glad to be back with these people. What's going to happen?'"

Excellent! ....25 days and counting, Wow.

Thanks Dry...it's always good to get some first hand info from MW himself!

I fear these last few weeks will be the longest....sigh

But...we've made it before and we can make it again...

user-pic

Thanks Dry, but now I am worried. How much time has passed? Oh my, I cannot wait!

One other thought. MW said he fought AMC's cutting two minutes of the show. I'm glad he fought them, but I'm guessing he was not successful. He's right; MM definitely put AMC on the map, and I hope they know it. I'd sure hate to see MW and Lionsgate move it to another cable network or to, God forbid, one of the ''Big Three!" The mix of adult content and no explicit nudity or language (except Pete, under his breath, in the pilot) is perfect for the time period and a move to say HBO would ruin the show. But then again, the problem of pesky commercials would be solved.

kathiemarie - last I read, he WAS successful. The show will run an extra couple of minutes to accommodate the ads without cutting show time. So instead of running from 10-11pm it will run something like 10-11:04 pm (or however many minutes it takes.) So those who tape but don't TIVO, be aware.

user-pic

Thanks, Auburn Annie. I am sure glad to hear that. I don't TIVO, I DVR with my Windows Media Center and TV tuner on my computer, and I cannot forgo commercials. I can and do, however, record every episode when it premieres and burn it to disk for repeated watchings. DVR'S will automatically adjust for the running time and record accordingly.

.....Yeah, he won that one, without too much of a hassle. It's nice to know all the conjecturing and jawing we do here isn't so far off the mark. Like you said, the horse's mouth.....

AMC said that they are making sure the various cable companies compensate for the extra two minutes, in that the DVRs won't cut off until the end of the program, NOT the end of the hour.

As to Lionsgate, I thought I read they are in the process of buying up the TVGuide.com and TVGuide channel, are reworking it all into a giant entertainment conglomerate, and that there is even a possibility that Mad Men will end up on that network at some point in the future.

I always like hearing or reading what MW has to say about the show. It's like he's really one of us, and is enjoying it in a similar way, not just a guy who is calculating something to sell. It seems to really mean something to him, this business of creating feelings and excitement. I think his deep connection to the show and its characters is probably what makes his genius with this so profound. It's one of those rare, magical combinations of people, passions, talent and dedication have really come together and made something better than just the sum of its parts!

user-pic

.....He has admitted that his passion for this work is pretty obsessive, and that he is a ghost in his own house during the production.

I don't mean to brag, but Breaking Bad got 6 noms, and Mad Men got 16.....

No offense or necessarily a reflection.....just sayin'.....

user-pic

I "get" your drift, Dry!

....and any "bragging" is justified!

user-pic

Breaking Bad is not even in the same league as Mad Men. I'm still trying to figure out how Cranston won over Hamm.

user-pic

.....It was nice that Jon looked genuinely happy for Bryan. That was classy.

user-pic

JH was robbed, kathie and all....ROBBED! And, yes, Dry, he did do the classy thing because he's a classy guy...but, it was still unfathomable he lost.

Cranston is a good actor, but JH is just so much better it's staggering.

Justice had better be done come Emmy night, that's all I know!

whew....I need a slug of Tanqueray.....swig....

user-pic

.....Just hoping we don't have a re-run this time around.

Mad Men is such a one-of-a-kind, and the majority of those shows, and people, have already been nominated and or/won a bunch of times.

user-pic

Well, Dry, you're out there (relatively) close to LA...could you maybe show up (and stay back in the back of the place) until they announce BC's name and then beat him up (on camera) and say it's in the name of the Maddicts for Hamm club?

Nah...never mind....but, it IS a nice thought.....

lol

user-pic

.....It did cross my mind - ha ha!

Without knocking all the other great shows, casts and crews, I just think this series has required so much more laborious research, work, extreme attention to detail, as well as OUTSTANDING writing and casting, that they really really do deserve to clean up, at least once, at the awards shows.

Not to mention the strife, pain and suffering of contractual and monetary constrictions, yet they still make it happen.

user-pic

Amen!
