SEASON 3 THEME MUSIC.

Let's pretend AMC is a having a contest to pick new Theme Music for Season 3 of "MAD MEN".
What song would you pick and why?

Comments

user-pic

Not so much theme music but I would love if they did a commercial with Cat Power's cover of "(I can't get no) Satisfaction"

user-pic

How about "Fever" by and sung by Peggy Lee.

user-pic

"Walk Like a Man" by the Four Seasons

user-pic

I just realized I haven't said "...and why." Fever, because, even though it's from the late 50s, it sort of personifies the pent up, then explosive, sexuality of most people at Sterling Cooper. Walk Like a Man, because it was a Top 40 hit in 1963 and I think Don will try to do some manly walking this new season.

user-pic

I'm just crazy enough to want the main theme to stay the same...I love the falling man (Don?) theme myself.

But, as for music for the soundtrack of the episodes, I'd like some Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Perry Como, Bobby Darin, Beatles, Matt Monro, Leslie Gore, too many more to list...I love the way MW and Co. match the music (usually during the closing credits) to what has just happened in the episode ~ or what is right around the corner..."Telstar" being only one great example.

user-pic

Do we mean theme music as in opening credits, or theme as in music to be the opening scene to kick off season 3?

If it's the latter, I looked at hit songs from 1964 assuming that's where we begin (if anyone knows please don't post the spoiler). So...I'm thinking of opening to a blank, black screen with "Chapel of Love" beginning to play overtop, then the first edit we see is Betty in the kitchen burning all their wedding memorabilia in the sink.

user-pic

"Betty's Bonfire"....very funny, Greg!

That is GREAT! Are you reading this, Matt?

user-pic

Because they're a little older..... (like in their 30's) ugh! How about some sexy sax by Boots Randolph, Englebert Humperdink, and Tom Jones

user-pic

I would write a new tune based loosely on "Everybody's Gonna Be Happy" by the Kinks (sans lyrics) and put some sort of anachronistic "drum'n bass" backbeat underneath and send it to them. In fact...guess who's doing that tonight!

user-pic

STrangers in the Night

user-pic

"Can't Buy Me Love" by the Beatles. Not the original but just the music - boomers should make the connection.

Remember "Love is something invented by guys like me to sell nylons," making nylons a derivative/surrogate of the intangible love.

user-pic

"Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime", for the obvious reasons....Cheers.

user-pic

You got that right, Drink & Smoke! Everybody at SC does love somebody sometimes, married or not.
I like the current theme just fine but if I had to pick one it would be "I Did It My Way" by Frankie S.
It seems whatever a Mad Men does, it will definitely be his way. Each one of them has a different angle.

user-pic

Of course D&S that's a great song to weave in the show! Pinkpen another fav song of mine from Frank S. and could fit in is: It's a quarter to Three... no one else in the place but you and me....

user-pic

Yep, guys, remember the tag line in S1 (I think it was S1)....... "where the truth lies"..... ?

I still like the Amy Winehouse (screwed up in her personal life, but jazzy singer!) "You Know I'm No Good" .... it really fits the show. There must have been a time limit on how long they could use that one....?

user-pic

Yeah SCfan I like Amy Winehouse's music too. She is very talented and I hope she can get off the booze and drugs so she doesn't leave us too soon too. There are so many singers that die young and makes you think about the missing music gems we don't have because of that. Greats like Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Elvis, now MJ.... Who else?

user-pic

.....How about some Lady Ga Ga?

Heh. Just kidding.

I'd say I prefer the retro music, although their contemporary choices have all been good..... save The Infanta by The Decemberists in Maidenform.

It's a really great song, set to a really great scene, but it was the most out-of-place scene and music in the series so far.

I loved it as a piece, but it would have been a better choice for a contemporary drama, not a period piece like this.

JMHO.

SCfan.....You're good at this.

user-pic

No briner - "Your cheatin heart," by Hank Williams. It applies to Don Draper and so many others in that cast of characters.

user-pic

Well, Chelsea, I wasn't wild about her music, but Janis Joplin fits that category...and Jimi Hendrix, also Jim Morrison, and a bunch more from the drugged-up showbiz/music biz, I'm sure....who else?

There has to be hundreds....I guess Johnny Cash was headed out, too, until June Carter and her family got him straigntened out...

user-pic

...seems a disproportionate number of them (showbiz/music folk) died in plane crashes, too...Jim Croce, Patsy Cline, John Denver, Ricky Nelson., Buddy Holly....

user-pic

It's not from the correct time period, but how about "Love the One You're With" by Stephen Stills.

And am I crazy, but I'm thinking the first time the Maidenform episode ran, it didn't have that Decemberists song in it; that it was put in for the encore episode. I definitely would have noticed it the first time around, because, as you say, Dry, it's so out of place. (Thanks for the compliment on another thread, Dry, but "you de [wo]man!". I would have posted over there, but I don't like to post after an unpleasant comment.)

user-pic

I prefer the retro songs too for the show. How about some Percy Faith mixed in. I think the theme song should stay the same though

user-pic

.....Oh, I love Johnny Cash.....and Patsy.....

Wonder how they will handle the Groovy Hippie years.....OMG.....

user-pic

.....Mambo.....Me either.

That was definitely a case of "happicus interruptus....."

user-pic

Chelsea, I love Percy Faith...esp. "A Summer Place".....soooo relaxing...right up there with "Stranger On The Shore"...but not quite....

I miss all those cool "instrumentals" we used to have....

user-pic

Acker Bilk...what a cool name....I just went over to YouTube and watched a vid of "Stranger On The Shore"....so summery and great! You can feel the tension just melt away.....aaaaahhhhhh

user-pic

I hope they wait a few years before the groovey hippy scene man. But I suspect not all them would be into wearing love beads. Pete's wife Trudy will probably redecorate their apartment with a wall of beads in her kitchen or would that be Sal's apartment?
Peace!

user-pic

Chelsea, that really does sound like Sal, but he would have to fight that wife of his to do it!
Another good song for Season 3 would be "Chances Are" by Johnny Mathis. Maybe even "Smoke Gets in your Eyes"!

user-pic

.....Lindy King quoted a bunch of you guys on her Mad Men blog.....check it out.....

I'll beat you to it, this time, Dry....

"Can I have your autograph(s)???"

I promise not to sell them on Ebay....

user-pic

Is she bearing gifts for their quotes?

user-pic

Yeah, pink...at least AMC gives out pens, mugs, etc.!

user-pic

Santo and Johnny's 1959 version of 'Tenderly.' Interesting mix of steel guitar with orchestral touches, I'm guessing to make the music more main stream for the time. Smooth and slick like Mad Men.

user-pic

....and, sure enough.....there's a ad for "Classic Sinatra II" right below this box....Go Frankie!!!

user-pic

madly, your mention of Santo and Johnny's music made me think of "Sleepwalk"...

Dry martini, I'm going to hire you as my publicist. Long hours, low pay but... baby, you can drive my car... :)

What is the title of the last song on Episode 12 (Season 3)? It is sung by a woman. Thanks
