Fifth-hand gossip
My co-worker's wife's hairdresser's boyfriend knows a vintage shop owner who sold set design items and clothes to MM! He says they have a really small budget because they have an estimated fewer than 1 milion viewers. Now Jon and Kate Plus Eight boasts about 11.5 million, so MM is really needing more publicity!

Jon & Kate, yuk, what a dumb show. Maybe Betty should have octuplets!
.....Funny.....Thanks for posting, flower. It's so wrong!
Are you listening, AMC? How about re-running our Mad Men, beginning with Season 1, oh, I don't know, maybe 2-3 times a week at a reasonable hour? I guarantee that will raise viewership - there has to be more people wanting to watch an award winning, ADULT drama, than just a measly million.
Yes this is such a perfect time for AMC to rerun Mad Men from season one. and onward....Maybe on Wednesday and Saturday nights at 8:00 ...If only they were afilliated with a network channel they could show it during the summer on ABC like Dexter from HBO was shown on ABC..... We don't get HBO and my hubby was disappointed that he wouldn't get to watch Dexter anymore. My thought was "YEAH, no more of that!" But obviously AMC isn't hearing us.
sab4ever,
Like your husband, I am a huge Dexter fan - got hooked the first season when I was living temporarily in a hotel provided by employer, then had to move back home with no Showtime. Luckily, I can get it from Netflix and I just watched Season 2. 3 and 4 are available and they're coming over the next couple of weeks.
I don't understand how that obnoxious Kate could draw 10x the viewers of the elegant and eloquent Mad Men. That woman is a shrew.
Is this person certain there are only 1 million viewers? That doesn't seem right.
I don't understand why AMC is pushing Breaking Bad so hard - I think it's a horrible show. I tried to get into it the first season because I have always enjoyed Bryan Cranston, but the show is just depressing and bleak and there is nothing redeeming about it.
AMC would do well to start rebroadcasting Mad Men, from Season One, since so many people didn't get interested until the awards shows and missed the entire first season.
I think doing a 2-season Marathon on July 4th weekend would be marvelous, and then return it 2 or 3 times a week after that until S3 starts in August.
I'd like to know how well season one dvd sales went. I rented season one one dvd at a time and then bought the set anyway. And I think they might be stingy with their reruns so they can sell more season two on dvd.
It is making me nuts waiting! If they would just show reruns of season one they could pick up more viewers.
Wow...my neighbors are outside popping firecrackers and it's 11:00 pm here. I hate to be an old foggy but
I agree that a Marathon of all shows starting with Season 1 would be fantastic...and at 8PM please...or no later than 9....at least twice a week.
That would help us )to make it until August) immensely.

They did a marathon last year of season 1 the weekend season 2 started. It was an all-day thing though.
Chopin 47,I have no idea if the estimated 1million viewrs is accurate or not. That's why I said it is 5th hand gossip.
.....No promotion or advertising, banishment to the midnight hour on a Sunday, complete omission from the monthly network schedule = fewer viewers.
Nothing like being set up to fail!
But WHY????
Yes, flower....that is the vexing question....WHY INDEED?
flowerpower,
I did a little research on the internet because I was curious about the 1 million viewers. Apparently, the 5th hand gossip is correct. I couldn't find any actual ratings, but I did find this short article on "tvratings.com." I'm astonished at the lower viewership.
["Mad" = Madison Avenue] set in the early 60’s.
From the LA Times:
The AMC drama, set on Madison Avenue in the midst of the cultural revolution of the 1960s, is basking in accolades that have only gained momentum as the Emmy Awards nominations draw near.
The cast is still rather taken aback when it comes to its phenomenon status.
And from our San Francisco Chronicle’s TV critic, Tim Goodman:
The brilliance of “Mad Men” is that the drama is mostly in the words. Actions are subtle. … Right now there’s probably no scripted series ahead with as much anticipation,
Also the fact that AMC is about to spend $25 million to promote it.
But what really startled me was reading that it only averaged 900,000 viewers in its first season.
Taken together, I believe that makes Mad Men the #1 show for the volume of critical acclaim divided by the actual number of TV viewers. No other show with as few viewers gets even remotely as much press.
It may very well be great television. But this isn’t meant to be a review of the show, just my astonishment that there’s so much continuing attention, and now marketing money, for something that’s been ignored by viewers.
For the record, I watched several episodes last season and liked that it brought back memories of the time period (I was about the same age as the children in the show at the time), but once I got past that level, the show just didn’t have enough to keep me around.
Mad Men averaged 1.5 millions viewers in the second season.
Compared with Season 1, "Mad Men's" sophomore run saw a 63% increase in total viewers (an average of 1.5 million viewers vs. 925,000), a 109% jump in the adults 18-49 demo (705,000 vs. 338,000) and an 81% increase in adults 25-54 (780,000 vs. 430,000).

Demographics are most important when it comes to ratings. Mad Men does well in the key demographics and that's the most important thing to companies. It also does well with viewers who earn more than $100,000 a year. Mad Men is a rare prestige product. AMC should feel very lucky they have it. Now give us some season 3 promotional material! We've waited long enough!
.....janeeyre.....Thank you for the information. Education is always a good thing.
It's been said here that the 18-36 demographic (or whatever it was) is the target audience.
If that's true, then why are so many commercials on television right now using Baby Boomer music?
What was the one the other day? State Farm or something, playing The Jackson Five's "I'll Be There." Waaaahhhhhhh!!!
Or the other totally unrelated product, playing TODD RUNDGREN??
WTF???
Or the mop commercial which had "Sparks" from the original Tommy LP.
WTF-y-F???
Well, Dry, why should they (ad guys) write something original when they can use actual classic REAL MUSIC from back when it really was.... (music, that is) ???
Plus, I heard/read somewhere that, other than our sense of smell, music is another sure path to our feelings of nostalgia...which is supposed to be a powerful selling tool....not as powerful as "SS" (Sex Sells) ~~ but still quite powerful.
Makes sense to me......
I agree with the comment about how in the world can John, Kate plus 8 be so popular. I watched a few times and got annoyed with all the screaming kids. They are cute but can't take it. Also Kate's hair gets on my nerves.... what's up with that... am I being too mean?
.....Apples and oranges.
A comparison between the two shows is ludicrous.
J&K is popular because no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public (to coin a phrase :-} )
I did have my guilty pleasures of American Idol (yes, I know.... even I don't understand what I see in it!) and Dancing with the Stars (even worse!) but I did draw the line at getting hooked on J&K + 8....watched the season premiere (to see what the hell all the fuss was about, since I'd never watched it prior)...that is one B - I - T - C - H, and one henpecked guy...no wonder he cheated on her ("alleged" so they are saying!) how they ever had/have time for those 8 kids (except for the birthday party) I do not know....
I'm just looking forward to Lonesome Dove on AMC tomorrow and Sun. nights....yay...quality TV...even if it IS 20 years old!! I guess that's why we still find ourselves watching Lucy and Andy Griffith!
