Epitaphs.....

.....Mention has been made in the last couple of days about our own obits.

I've thought about it, and all I can come up with so far is.....

"Never on time. Always out of line......

.....But she tried hard."

Here's what I want for my epitaph and on my headstone --

I TOLD YOU I WAS SICK

.....zerelda.....I have looked and looked - where is that thing you just posted about the writing on your tombstone.....

Call me __________, but you guys are funny...

.....Here it is.....

As for epitaphs, I found mine in an old mystery. My real name is fairly uncommon, and whenever I find it used in fiction, the character is invariably either the dimwitted sort or the mean and cruel other woman. The following delighted me enough that I decided I want it for my epitaph:

"Although Zerelda hadn't an ounce of commonsense or moral courage, she did her best, and always meant well."

Well, that one I posted, Dry, is one I heard about years ago and I always thought it would be nice to give folks who found themselves at a cemetery a little chuckle, since they would most likely be sad...

I guess I'd like something simple and to the point:

She lived simply, loved purely, and made a mean chocolate pie....

"A day late and a dollar short. But he usually smelled good."

Actually, on a more serious note, I've always loved that epitaph seen in an old English churchyard:

ONCE I WAS AS YOU; SOON YE SHALL BE AS I.

ras...well, there's a lot to be said for smelling good!

ha ha

.....Agreed! You could do worse!

.....Happy Memorial Day to everyone.

We got sucked into the couch magnet tractor beam, and are toggling between AMC's and TCM's WW II movie marathons.

On AMC, Sen. John McCain is the spokeshost for the day.

What are all'y'all doing today?

Anyone BBQ'ing?

.....Sorry, I didn't do it!! My computer is rebelling!

Well, we cooked out, Dry...hope your holiday was fun, too, all you dear Maddicts.....

Grilled Cheeseburgers and Baked Beans, Potato Salad, Green Salad, Chips, Pickled Okra, varied other pickles, Iced Tea --- and Chocolate Meringue Pie for dessert!

We caught Gary Cooper in Sergeant York on TCM (I believe), and he was excellent, as always.

High Noon was on a few weeks back, and I must say, Coop held up nicely between 1941 and 1952.

Hi Maddicts,
Hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. Anyone see Cooper as Howard Roark in The Fountainhead? Even though it was a campy, silly flick, I can somehow see Jon Hamm giving it a try as Roark. He has that stoic, unyielding quality that would have done Ayn Rand's hero proud.

SCfan, I am getting hungry just reading your post.

One of the best epitaphs I've ever heard about was that of Mel Blanc, the voice of Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, and many of the other beloved Warner Brothers cartoon characters: "That's all, folks."

Funny, Cattychick!!!!

Back to the epitaphs - the cemetery we go to has every female as "Wife and Mother" - HUNDREDS of 'em. So I made my family promise that mine will say "Hellraiser and Shitdisturber".

user-pic

.....flower.....That is very funny.

Good one Cattychick.

Just nosing around I came up with a few sites of famous epitaphs. SCfan, the one you mentioned actually has a history.....

Dean Martin:
Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime
R.I.P.

Alexander the Great:
A tomb now suffices for him
whom the world was not enough

Surprisingly, there aren't all that many funny ones. It seems most people wanted to be remembered sincerely.

I think this one is from the old west. A simple slip of punctuation turns it from a Biblical reference to a call-girl transaction:
"Here lies___ whose price was above Rubie's".
