Talk: Mad Men: May 2009
Tonight's episode is the final one of Season 2. Wouldn't it be nice if AMC would now begin showing Mad Men at a more reasonable hour? They could start at the beginning with Season 1 and just keep running through the end of Season 2. I know my fellow Maddicts will agree that this show deserves more opportunities to be seen. Believe it or not, many people tell me they have never seen or even heard of it. After two seasons and all the awards it has received, I find this more than a little unbelievable. When I tell them about the show, invariably their response is that it sounds really interesting, and they can't wait to watch it. Then comes the bad news - trying to find it on their TV set.
Is it just wishful thinking on my part, or do you think AMC will start re-running Mad Men in a better time period before the new season starts? There will be a new season, won't there?
Anyone from AMC care to respond?

Does anyone else think it was out of character for Sal to have laughed like he did at Freddie when he had his pants wetting incident? I've thought about it off and on since the re-airing of that episode, and it kind of bothers me that Sal came across as so insensitive....it just didn't seem like something Sal would have done to me. Of course, if he had already consumed the to-the-rim-of-the-glass drink Freddie handed him, that might explain it to a degree, but........Anyone else have this same reaction to that scene? I mean, I could have easily seen Pete doing such a thing, but Sal???

The character I think I'd have to go for is Ken Cosgrove. Even though he seems like a committed bachelor at this point, I think Ken is probably the least screwed up of the bunch. He writes, knows art, isn't completely socially inept, knows women, is pretty smart, a hard worker, and sometimes flashes a sense of humor. Plus Ken is nice looking.
I would have a hard time averting my eyes from Roger, though. Hard to turn away from Mr. Fun, but the cheating would get to me after awhile.
So, who would you pick?

Fischler: The key, I've discovered... I think is the costumes. When I'm wearing the gun belt with the badge and the gun, it's really heavy. It's like 10 pounds added onto you. ... And then when I'm in that Dharma jumpsuit, they're hot and big and that feels different to me. And then with my hair parted and that white dinner jacket and the tux... the costumes help to lend themselves for me to become the character again.
I'm the furthest away from Jimmy Barrett right now. Finding him again is going to be hard. But I think putting that suit on I'll just snap to it pretty quick.

Here we go again, Maddicts!....
As promised, I am posting the thread for our seventh Movie Mad-ness Discussion! August (Season 3 premiere) will be here before we know it!
This month our discussion will include three movies that were an integral part of Season 2: "Manchurian Candidate,""Thirteen Days,"and "Peer Gynt." The topics in these three movies began many great discussions last season, and I hope we can revive some ideas and observations to share one more time.
Even though none of the movies were seen by our Mad Men characters, they were dramatizations of the events and actions experienced by the characters. Here's where we expand upon how Don's life was mirroring the struggles and strife dealt with in "Peer Gynt." We've seen how the Cuban missle crisis affected the Sterling Cooper clan, and watching "Thirteen Days" certainly refreshed our memories on what was really happening simultaneously in Washington, DC. The Manchurian Candidate's Raymond Shaw had a little of Don Draper in him. Do you agree?
Thanx to everyone returning to participate in this on-going discussion. I look forward to another lively discussion and will post my comments right along with you.

Hello, Maddicts :D
This would be my first official post on the Talk blog, so... howdy :)
I've been lurking around on the Blog and Talk pages on the Mad Men site and noticed that the weekly "What You're Saying" section offers some prizes to those who get quoted.
My question to those who have gotten prizes - how exactly does it work and what did you get?
I recall being quoted once, and now that I've found out there are prizes involved, I'm sort of excited. I'd pay vast amounts of money to get my hands on some neat Mad Men swag, and if AMC's awesome enough to be giving some out free of charge, I'd jump at the opportunity.
Anyways, I cannot wait until July and August roll around; looks like it's going to be another Mad summer this year :D
Cheers all,

"American Idol" on Fox was at the top of the Content Power Ratings, AMC's "Mad Men" was the highest-ranked prime-time cable show, and Showtime's "Dexter" was the highest-ranked pay-cable program.

Did you all see Grey Gardens? What did you make of it? Did you see a mother-daughter love story? A mother who ruined her daugter's life? A parable of American women of that era? Just a story? Better Homes and Gardens gone horribly wrong? A cat story? And when Little Edie does her Greenwich Village "Cabaret Act" at the end - were the people really enthralled or was it grotesque?? And can one find the Maysles version of Grey Gardens anywhere?

Sorry for not posting this in advance. My only excuse is I was away on business.
This week is the 50th Anniversary of the CLIO awards, the Oscars of all forms of advertising. This year the ceremony was held in Las Vegas. Good old TCM used this occasion to run several of the many feature films all about the ad biz. They ran them in order of release date, so we started with network radio and progressed to TV as it became more sophisticated. Some of these movies are hard to find except on TCM. Because of my high interest in the ad game I had recorded them from TCM previously. To me they all resonate as well today as when I first saw them in their original releases in theaters.
THE HUCKSTERS from 1947 is all about returning war hero played by Clark Gable who wants to return to an even better executive position in an ad agency. In those days it was the agencies that produced radio series. But first, to prove he still has it, he must sign the beautiful society war widow played by Deborah Kerr (in her first USA film) to endorse a brand of soap owned by a lout played by Sydney Greenstreet. It has long been felt that lout is based on the long time head of American Tobacco, familiar to MM fans. However, the rude act is commonly believed to have been done by an early head of Pepsi Cola.
CALLOWAY WENT THATAWAY from 1951 is about a tiny ad shop that bought the rights to a series of obscure Westerns and put them on early TV, despite the fact the cowboy star had dropped from sight. Fred McMurray and Dorothy McGuire own the agency. Howard Keel plays "Smoky Callaway". Jesse White (the Maytag Man) plays his former agent. Stan Freberg, not long out of high school, plays the agency office boy. Natalie Schafer, long before she was "Lovey Howell" on Gilligan's Island, plays the wife of the sponsor.
IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER from 1955 is about a slightly more sophisticated TV industry. It stars Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse as a TV executive.
A FACE IN THE CROWD from 1957 is an especial favorite of mine because it shows Patricia Neal as a lovely, lonely and sympathetic woman. While a reporter for her father's tiny radio station she discovers Andy Griffith, a jailed tramp who happens to sing and tell jokes. This was Griffith's feature debut. As his character becomes an increasing success on TV, he starts to believe his hype. Perhaps the author and director of this film were thinking of other people infamous in that time. Shall we say this situation still exists!
MM had Jimmy Barratt. Very similar.

A recent thrill of my life was being there in Las Vegas this Tuesday night when our own MW was presented a special CLIO award for his positive and historic view of the ad industry of the 1960s.
Unfortunately since the CLIO award show is not televised no clips are available as a link. Clearly all the folks who were movers and shakers on Mad Ave back in the day are delighted with MM. Many admitted the things they actually did were far worse than shown on MM. Also current ad industry big wigs are also fond of our own MM.
For me it is always nice to be invited to an industry event at which I am not the oldest guy in the room!

My apologies if I am way behind other posters here. I am a rabid Mad Men fan. I can barely wait until the start of season 3. We all know that Mad Men has a difficult time establishing a large fan base. Given that, what is the theory behind running the prior season episodes at Midnite? Why wouldn't you run the prior season episodes during prime time (or more reasonable) viewing hours in an attempt to gain viewers??

One thing I love about MAD MEN is that it seems to defy pigeonholing as far as genre goes...
How would you define it?
a). A dark or bleak comedy
b). A soap opera
c). A "perils of pauline" cliffhanger serial?
d). a psychodrama
e). a dream or surreal nightmare you had once
f). an earnest historical fiction
g). a fond exercise in nostalgia
h). a total shattering of nostalgia
i). erotica
j). a classic American drama
h). a mystery story
i). a horror story
Gee, I could go on! I think you'll agree that MAD MEN is any and all of these things. It defies genre. It even out-Lynches David Lynch, I'd say.
Thoughts?

France in the 60's was so different from the US, I don't know if they will be able to relate. That, Maddicts, is a quote from Matt Weiner from a brief article on Mad Men in the latest Entertainment Weekly. It is in response to a question about whether the Jared Harris character is playing Sterling Cooper's financial officer. Entire quote: "I can't confirm where he is working. The audience should have no expectations about what's going to happen. There is no formula for the show, and that should hopefully keep it entertaining."
Mr. Weiner also lays to rest any questions about the father of Betty's expected baby. "For some reason there has been some confusion about it because she was unfaithful, but it's Don's baby."
Mr. Weiner confirmed the deal he agreed to in January is for 2 years, so I guess we should not have to go through the same trauma next winter wondering if Mad Men will lose it's brilliant creator. His formula for a show without a formula certainly seems to be working, as it most definitely is entertaining, wouldn't you agree, Maddicts. What am I saying, of course you all agree, or you wouldn't be Maddicts, would you?

And the main character, while he's a really funny guy, looks like a total Don Draper rip-off. I like the show, think it's really funny. But I LOVE Mad Men. They are definitely not in the same league. And it kills me that MM has influenced so many things (from fashion to other tv shows) yet still has such a small audience. I hope season 3 blows the doors off MM's ratings!!

As a man I have a felt an affinity with Don Draper, despite his weaknesses and faults, and have found him an attractive character (in a straight man to man kind of way). I have to confess, though, after just finishing 'Season 2' that in my opinion the real hero (or should that be heroine) of the show is Peggy. The more episodes I watch the more convinced I am that the show is really about her titanic rise in an age where all the odds are stacked against her, from her sex to her personal (unmarried mother) predicaments. This is given depth when it is compared to how Joan has struggled to develop her career and the difficulties she has found breaking the mould with the strictures placed on her. Discuss??

I was excused for lunch today while serving on a jury. I only had an hour, so I went to the first restaurant in walking distance from the Courthouse. While waiting for the waitress to take my order, I looked up at the TV screen mounted on the wall in front of me. There was our own Joan Holloway looking down at me. At least, it was the actress that portrays her. The sound was off so I have no idea what the show was, but after giving my order I sat and watched. It became a game to pretend that it really was Joan Holloway and to make up a story to go along with her actions on the TV screen. As I watched, Joan sat at a table with a large hairy man and the two of them ate from about 4 different pies scattered over the table. Joan very kindly got up and fetched the milk and poured him a glass. I did not get the sense he had to remind her as the rat doctor did when they ate Chinese. Apparently the man's name was Pookie Bear, and Joan, after eating quite a lot of pie, then proceeded to buy a gun from him - no doubt inspired by thoughts of said rat doctor. When next Joan appeared on the scene, about the time my turkey sandwich arrived, she was putting on a trench coat and seemed to be arguing with a small Asian man in a baseball cap. She kept offering him money, and he kept refusing it. Then he suddenly grabbed her and began pulling her through the door of the apartment she was in into the hallway. She fought him off, and they argued for awhile, and then he grabbed her again, and again tried to remove her from the apartment. Again she desperately fought him off. Again they argued, while she seemed to be encouraging him, and this time he got behind her and succeeded in shoving her out the door into the hallway and slamming the apartment door closed. As Joan stood there gasping for breath looking haunted and hunted, I could only assume she was late for a date with the rat doctor and trying desperately to get out of it. Suddenly she noticed the gun which had fallen out of her purse onto the floor. She picked it up and seem heartened by the feel of the pistol in her hand. Things do not look good for the rat doctor. The screen went to commercials and some other stuff then, but just as my check came, Joan reappeared and seemed to be offering a gift wrapped box to some guy who looked like an extra from The Sopranos. When he opened it, it was full of fishing flies, some of which seemed to have been made from that awful hair piece Joan usually wears on Mad Men. On this particular show her lovely red hair was loose around her pretty face and a huge improvement it was over the ugly hairpiece, let me tell you. At that point, I had to leave and rush back to the Courthouse. I have no idea how the TV show ended, but I continue to be bemused by the pie eating episode and the box of fishing flies. Our Joan is clearly leading a double life.....

My new TV Guide has a nice little article all about the new season of Mad Men. There is much speculation in it (as there has been on this Forum) about the time period Season 3 will cover. Although both Matt Weiner and Rich Sommer (Harry) seem to be saying in the article that there has been too much "been there and done that" on the Kennedy assassination, other clues are popping up that seem to indicate Mad Men will pick up somewhere around where they left off. Bryan Batt's new wardrobe for Season 3 was all labelled 1961-62, for one example. Plus, the child actors who portray Sally and Bobby have been invited back for this new season.
Mr. Weiner also, according to TV Guide, dropped a clue when he stated "I try to relate the show as much to right now as possible. Next season is about how people respond to change. They can either run away from it in terror or enjoy the ride." Since last season ended with a possible takeover by the Brits, it sounds like the Sterling Cooper folks are going to be facing a lot of change. Plus, there was certainly a lot of change felt in the country after the assassination, so that could be one way of showing its affect on the SC folks.
So happy and relieved to be reading actual information about Season 3. It seems like it has been a loooooooong time coming, and I know I am not the only Maddict who feels this way.

What a surprise! Law and Order (in any and all forms) is one of my favorite shows and I can recognize almost all the episodes by the first commercial break. Here it is after 1pm on 5 May, the second day of MM Season 3 production. So far there are no reports of any difficulties. With such a talented and experienced crew having episodes ready on 16 August will hardly be a problem
There has been some speculation in the trade press about AMC running MM into the networks November sweeps. Personally I like to think the MM fans will prefer MM to whatever the networks program.
What excites me is the blurb in The Hollywood Reporter that the very talented Jared Harris has joined MM as the S-C financial officer "Lane Pryce" for at least 10 episodes. THR says Jared started filming his part today, but other sources said he started yesterday, 4 May. It is agreed that JH will be also making a movie. Apparently this will be SOP for MM. During the 2008 season JH did several episodes of "The Riches" on FX with Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver. JH has done a lot of projects, all listed on IMDb. As a reformed CFO myself I am thrilled that on his IMDb page JH uses a very non-corporate headshot. It will be most interesting to see him with a MM look.

I hope the make-up department pulls a couple of 80 year old hairdressers out of retirement to work on the new season. 1964 was the pinnacle of haute styles (My Fair Lady, Tippi Hedron, Connie Francis) and was reflected among the general population. We have seen Betsy at the beauty parlor once...yet any woman in her circle would have had a standing appointment; maybe bi-weekly.
Poor Joan...what does that hairdo want to be? Does anyone remember the REAL beehive? the one that looked like an inverted cyclone-sometimes paired with a "Page Boy" on the bottom and a "cone" on top.
Or maybe the Connie Francis asymetrical tidalwave of hair that swung out 8 inches to one side of the head?
We have seen Peggy's Flip and Kitty's "Ann Landers" do. Now is the time to step it up and REALLY document NYC 1964.
(my sister and I used to critique the hairstyles on my mother's can of Breck Hairspray....there were like 8 of them...all worn by people we saw everyday...kept in her drawer of hairpieces. Don't laugh...all my friends mothers wore them as well.)

So there I sat, staring aghast at the screen and that eternal question that is worse than Chinese water torture, and it finally dawned on me. That's the secret coded message!! I think that in order to get past this initial forum, you have to know the super top secret coded message given out to only a precious few. Once you type that onto the screen, you are in like Flynn to the REAL Mad Men forum where Matt Weiner and all the stars hang out. You know, it is just like Little Orphan Annie and Pierre Andre and their secret radio society. Man, oh man, I bet once I get into the top secret forum level, they will probably send me a decoder badge and all the secret rules and the handshake and everything. Oh, I am soooo excited.
I bet there are secret coded messages in every episode, and once I get my decoder badge I will know what they are actually saying. Like what Kitty was REALLY talking about when she offered Ken some pineapple and pinenuts pie. I bet I will finally understand what the heck all those weird people in California were actually saying to Don! I will finally know who Mitch is!
O.K., here goes, I am going to submit this now, and you know what, I bet I get a personal message back from Matt Wiener himself telling me exactly when Season 3 starts. I won't be able to tell anyone else, though, 'cause, you know, once you join a super top secret society they expect you to obey the rules.....that's probably why they gave Pete that rifle....I bet he's the enforcer......they don't have to worry about me, however, 'cause my lips are sealed....tick a lock....it is in the vault.
