I'm sure he embarrassed her somehow. Just that stupid scarf and pipe alone would do it, but he probably showed his true colors. He wants to be liberal and hip, but I'm sure the attitudes from his privileged background re-emerged. Until he went south, probably the only black people he knew, other than Sheila, were servants of some kind. He probably asked someone if they knew his housekeeper because she was from Alabama too!

Don't you love how things happen off-screen in MM, that are never fullly explained? We're left to fill in the blanks ourselves; kind of like life.

As an African American woman, I could understand why she broke up with him. He was dating her for the wrong reasons but as the same time standing up for social change. Back in that time, being a freedom fighter was so honorable especially to the black community. I think she was proud of him as a man but knew he wasn't the right companion for her. I loved Sheila character. She was the first black role that didn't evolve being a maid or janitor. I was first saw that in season one...I cringed. But the show does a great job to show them as real people...no more, no less and that's nice.

I think it would be hard on almost any relationship to be cooped up together 24 hours a day on a bus for that length of time. Plus, he's an ass.
